  • I head to the Land Rover Experience at Eastnor Castle to test out the new Defender, off road!
Recently I've started to contemplate replacing the BMW X3 M40i as my daily and one car that has been catching my attention is the new Land Rover Defender. I first drove the new 110 last year but it was only on road so I was keen to experience the car where it should excel the most, off road!
    About Land Rover Eastnor:
Experience the true spirit of adventure in its purest form. 66 miles of carefully managed trails in an area of outstanding natural beauty in the grounds of Eastnor Castle. Land Rover Experience Eastnor provides a unique adventure that encourages drivers to push both the vehicle and themselves to the limit. The terrain here is so varied and challenging that it has been used for decades as a secret test facility to refine and test the off-road capability of every new Land Rover. Featuring steep slippery inclines, articulation tracks, ruts, open ground and deep water, you really will have a true-to-life driving experience.
So whether you are looking at organising an event, professional driver training for your company, adventure days or a memorable day out for that special someone in your life. Land Rover Experience Eastnor is a truly unforgettable experience.

I have had a new 110 Defender since December, it is the ultimate family wagon, quiet, comfortable, goes everywhere and is imposing. I would highly recommend it Sam. If there were faults they would be the technology is still not perfect (occasionally) and due to the tall tyres it tends to tramline when you least expect it.

Maybe part of the reason you're not experienced off road is that you've never had a car that you really could take off road, so you therefore never considered it. I'd love a change from supercar road trips to off-road adventures! Maybe you could take Shmee along with his G63, you can get yourself a Defender 110, Paul can come with an Urus...... And then get Tony to bring an X5 or one SUV from his stock, then all of you go up north somewhere for an off-road adventure. Use SUVs what they were made for, the whole thing would be ABSOLUTELY MEGA! Plus, Shmee has said he wants to experience his G63 off-road.....

Defender is an amazing car! I had the privilege of test driving one from Land Rover back in August 2020 for 3 hours and I was blown away by it. However, I do agree the car is very wide, but again once you spend time in a car you tend to understand it better. I currently own a 2010 Range Rover Sport and when I am in a position to upgrade my car the Defender is definitely a car I hope to upgrade to.

Great video Sam. The new defender is more of a new discovery than a defender replacement. I drove a 110 2 litre diesel last summer for about 2 hrs on road. It was great. Really didn’t want to hand it back! Lovely ride being on air suspension and very spacious. The driving position is high enough to see over everything! The price is high though but you are getting a car that will go anywhere and probably the only car you will ever need. Of course there is now the V8 available to order too that sound incredible!

  • @danielheathcote5625

Sam, do you really need a five door? The three door has back seats when you need them - how much do you use the back seats in x3 for intended purpose, I.e. people sitting in them? As often as most owners will gp off road? If so, not that impractical!
Always remember our family discovery 1 - literally could go up side of a mountain. When we went to our flat in the alps in summer, it’d be put in low box, diff lock and driven along various bits to cut out hairpins saving a couple of kilometres of road! But, reliability really has not improved that much - if you get a Monday to Thursday built car, you’ll have some issues unless you’re lucky, if you have a friday, Saturday or Sunday built car, you’ll be in the garage more often than not. We ended up with triggers new broom - full interior replaced, three new gearboxes, two transfer cases and diffs, 4 clutches, 2 new rads, various new dampers, 3 new power steering pumps because power steering seized if you went through a puddle ( it didn’t always seize if you waded through a river though!), 4 new turbos, etc - I’d go on, but yeah, lease company rang company car fleet administrator at my dads office and said it’s the first time they’d had a different car given back compared to the one that they’d leased to the company yet still on same reg!

I have read and watched so many Defender reviews and virtually all of them are hugely positive. They’re not cheap but high demand and strong residuals means a competitive PCP😉 You, more than anyone are best placed to know Tony’s reasons for sending his back and yet you still seem keen. Go for it, it will be a top daily work horse and perhaps unlike the X3 still allow you to make great content with it.

I really like the new Defender, seen a green and black spec 110 on the road which looked great.
If you don't get one, I would definitely still like to see an adventure trip with the Defender at some point. Maybe head to Wales.

No kids = 90. Need lots of space = drop the rear seats in the 90. Living and parking in London = 90. Coolest UA-camr on earth = 90.

The new defender is also growing on me, and you're right.... it's pitched perfectly...if you want to go off-road - you could very easily.

I’m facing a similar decision Sam. 90 looks better but the 110 is more practical. I think where I’ve got to is get the 90 but with the jump seat option. On those rare occasions where I need the space, I can fold down row 2 (get the bigger boot) and still carry 3 people. 👍🏼

New defender is awesome. personally I would get the 90, then just get a roof rack that could go on as and when you need more luggage space

It’s always cute watching Brits drive along some muddy tracks. In all seriousness, get the 90. How often do you actually have people in the back? And it can fit a bail of hay in the rear, so that’s more than enough space for camera equipment.

The Defender is very cool, especially the 90, and has huge presence, but it’s also huge, wide and expensive. Maybe a 2 year old Jaguar F Pace SVR would be a better size, more fun, and scratch that 5l supercharged V8 itch that means you keep lusting after an F Type (entirely understandable) and can be had for less than £60K, that’s a lot of car for the money. A bit colour spec dependent, but some of the choices like Britch Racing Green with tan interior or my favourite Desire Deep Red with light oyster interior are super nice, though these colours may not have been available on the original model. Just remember to buy from a main dealer and extend the warranty if you keep it more than a year, just on case. A dilemma, but what are the alternatives? (pod cast?) Alfa Romeo Stelvio Quadrifoglio? Porsche Macan Turbo? AMG GL something?
