I live in the UK but have spent a lot of time in Southern Africa where most people I know who go seriously off road choose a Toyota on the basis of reliability rather than absolute off-road performance.
I have owned three Land Rover Discoveries from new over the last thirty years. The first had a major engine problem after three years. The second ran virtually trouble free for almost twenty years and 200,000 miles, but had terrible paint quality/galvanic corrosion that Land Rover would not address under warranty. My current Discovery 4 has only done 16000 miles, but recently had a complete electronic black out. You would not want that to happen in the middle of the Kalahari. My son's 2018 Discovery Sport had a similar "control system fault" at the same time.
Despite these issues, the Discovery is great to drive on and off road in the UK and meets my needs for seating capacity, load carrying, towing and comfort better than the Toyota. It will never be too far from support if/when it breaks down. If I was in Southern Africa or other remote areas I would choose a Toyota every time.

Oh, and while it’s in extended mode you can press the raise suspension button with a foot on the brake and it goes into “hyper extension” mode which adds a ton more clearance. But im not a fan of that setting as there is no longer any give for ride comfort. But it’s cool to see it standing on stilts!

You should see the Carfax on my former 2015 LR4 ....about an inch thick. Spent a total of 3.5 months in total at the dealer in the 3 and a half years I had it. No feeling like doing 75 on the highway and having the suspension go out. Or hitting the gas and it lurching backwards. My 2007 LR3. Year 5 and 6 put about 4500 into it to keep it running post warranty. 2007 RR Sport. Took about 25K miles in constant visits to fix everything. Then it was pretty good to 140K. All bought new to take advantage of Section 179. My 2012 Range Rover was actually perfect. No issues. Now for my Toyotas. 2000 4Runner Limited bought new. Bought an extended warranty. Worst waste of money cause I never used it. 75K miles and only warranty repair was a broken arm rest. Traded in with original brakes. Bought a used 2000 Land Cruiser in 2004 with 67K. Came with new tires and brakes. Traded in at 150K on same tires and brakes. Nothing broke but the tape deck (which I don't own any tapes). Worst decision to get rid of that car. Someone is probably still driving that car.....
Oh yeah. The big Rovers love new brakes and tires every 25K miles. I could write a whole post on all the loaners that would break.Them Rovers sure are pretty though :) while I do see some high mileage ones they seem to require a lot of work, Toyotas do that with little more than fluid changes and normal wear items. Actually great friends with my Land Rover mechanic now. He tells me all mechanics at his dealership drive Toyotas, Subarus, and Jeeps.

I'll take the Land Rover Defender over the copycat Toyota Land Cruiser. Yes, you can put 200k on a Land Cruiser because it's meant to be used for highway driving, unlike the Land Rover Defender that is a true overlander not meant to be used mainly on the highway. Any LR, or RR will outperform Toyota's SUVs all day long all side Jeep, the new Ford Bronco straight stock.
I've bought 100 + Toyotas that had major motor problems with less than 1200 miles on them. Toyota stopped making their own motors and are having a 3rd party make them for the last 20+ years.
I know there will be a lot of haters there but the truth hurts sometimes. One thing I will say is any SUV sold today is very overpriced no matter what brand.

Coming from someone who has owned:
    - 2008 Range Rover sport supercharged
    -2005 4runner
    -and now a 2007 lexus gx4700:
Its Definitely an over-pushed and an over-hyped position to have to think that toyota reliability is so much superior, or so much more important. I had numerous problems with my 4 runner that never existed in my range rover. Except for the frame rot. The metal they use in toyota and lexus really sucks.
The reason why toyota has a reputation for being more reliable is partially because its under-powered.
Its built to handle more power than it comes with. Parts for them are also much cheaper, but you can feel the cheapness when you drive it.
I had a 2008 range rover sport supercharged, and I just switched to a 2007 lexus gx470. Overall, the driving experience is much less fun with the GX470. It almost feels like someone pissed in my cheerios. But then again, the msrp is much less for the lexus gx470.
In either case, if you can afford an 80-100k vehicle, you can probably afford to fix it every so often. And additionally, you're not going to keep the car for 20 years...... You're more likely to drive it 100k-150k miles and then want a newer better vehicle anyway.
So buy the lexus, pay more, get a slower and less powerful car, and use it in the exact same way, get the same gas mileage, and pat yourself on the back because you didn't break down?
I like to hear my supercharger whine.

Have to say, I'm a little tired of hearing that the TFL Defender broke down, no it kept on going, it had a check engine light that know one new what the problem was, so the engineers said it needs a new engine. Granted a check engine light on a new car is not good, but I suspect it was blown out of all proportion. Also the second one they said was also broke, was broken by a mechanic at the dealership who severed a wiring harness!

They threw mud on the Defender because they lost money on having to cancel the 'To hell and back' series with the Defender. 1st one had a fault ( lots of new cars can have faults in any brand, not just JLR ), 2nd was damaged by a mechanic ( the lad didn't get the proper training because of the Covid outbreak, so all the training they received was trough Zoom or PDFs ). And all that took a long time overall ( again, COVID made it that way ). The only thing I regret about the TFL Defender that they didn't wait a bit longer to get the same spec they had on the 1st one.

Sorry but you guys are making a whole lot of excuses for a manufacturer that already has a bad reputation for reliability. I'm honestly glad TFL had to deal with that after they talked down about their old landcruiser for being too reliable which apparently takes the passion out of owning the vehicle. I hope they enjoyed the "passion" for the new defender lol

@@LandCruisin Toyota's reputation for reliability is overestimated and Land Rovers unreliability is also overestimated, particularly by Americans. The key point in your statement was "reputation", this comes from the fact Toyota's have, slowly, replaced the old Defender in most of the world, due to cheapness, were servicing and maintenance just doesn't happen! In the less developed world cars are kept running, by finding parts from recked vehicles, and there are a lot of cheap recked Toyota's !

Just a point of clarification, the difference between HP and PS is not where it's being measured (they are both brake horsepower which is what all manufacturer HP claims are), it's a difference in the technical way horsepower is calculated between metric and imperial measurements, PS being metric horsepower.

I've had 3 Toyota Prados (never owned a Land Cruiser) and 3 Landrover Discoverys (3, 4, 5). Discovery kills the Prado off road. Terrain Response is almost cheating! Never had a breakdown in the Landrovers as everyone worries about. My Discovery 4 has 250 000 Km on the clock and has been worked in the Australian outback. Still going strong. Think their reliability issues disappeared with the release of the Discovery 3. Big negative with the 5 is that there is no room under the bonnet for a second battery.

Love my 200 series Land Cruiser. It has the legendary million mile proven 5.7 V8, and they built a premium SUV to match. It’s such a nice vehicle to tour with 7 people comfortably both on and off road. When overlanding in the middle of no where with no support, I’d choose the Land Cruiser without a second thought. Especially, when your life can depend on it.

I'd like to see a behind the scenes of this crew learning the whole filmmaking craft as they go. It's be cool to see them learn about ND filters and color grading and microphones and background music. Doing more than one take so you can get different stick-on gopro angles. Don't swivel the camera to the thing the guy is talking about. Cut to the thing in the edit. Stuff like that.
