Thank you so much for your video man, just spent the weekend doing the conversion on my xt 5 speed to xr6 6 speed. Wouldn't of been able to with out this video. Was a mission, but will be so worth it.
GW Autocare in Bacchus Marsh I had abit of work done while it was there. I had a new water pump installed and an XR cluster coded as well as the 6 speed conversion set be back $3400
Thank you for making this video, yes info out there about this is hard to get, for someone like me that has 3 FG's and one of them being a 5 speed I now know what I maybe up for once this 5 speed shits itself, thanks again for the video
Informative video old mate. I had same issue finding info on ZF6. Had to revert to BMW tech specs. Got sorted in the end. But keen to see if anyone other than ZF can do handshake between different TCM and PCMs moving forward.
I gotta say man you're hell funny n I'm thinking of buying na fg n rebuilding a turbo motor for it n you have already been a big help for me thanks mate
Only a couple of People can do it here in Brisbane.. I had it done by Paul at L.A.P Auto Salisbury and it only cost $2400 including zf service and a couple of other things. Highly recommend getting it done, Not only do you get an awesome gearbox but it adds value to your car.
the only reason why they dont share it is because they can make 4-5k drive in drive out for each conversion. Probably more with the nEw CoViD tAx on parts .
Just did this conversion after turboing the n/a engine, 5 speed started slipping at the 300kw mark. For me the tailshaft was not a straight swap. the diff couplings were different so needed to swap the rear of the 5sp tailshaft to the front of the 6sp. You could also swap the entire diff over if you can get ya hands on one.
Wow how did I forget to mention the tailshaft??? Yes you absolutely will need a tailshaft to suit ZF. Also the NA & Turbo tailshafts have different sized mounts too.
Awesome work 😊 I have a f6 bf series 2 box that just failed , if I get a newer model fg transmission is it as simple as change my old tcm over into the new box or are they different boxes? Thanks
Thank you. Do you know if an engine and zf pair can work in another vehicles after anti theft has been disabled, or does the zf still want to talk to the bcm and key?
Steve Allen none at all. After publishing this video I’m even getting messages from shops saying they’ve made 5speed PCMs work with the 6speed boxes, so yeah.
Hi i really want to respond. Can you make a video on how to paint your inner door handles and door cups and the door belt mould im really in need of help on how to do it
but what if you have a zf gearbox along with the engine it was running with? then would it just be the wiring harness that is the issue. im currently doing a turbo swap to an na fg and took out the 5spd and the na motor out and replaced it with the turbo motor and zf. also bought the zf6 tailshaft so does that mean that the wiring harness is the only issue? idk if taking out the harness from one car and putting it onto the other car is an easy job as i do have the wiring harness from the turbo ute. cheers
I wanted to do this a couple of months ago with the wife's 2011 territory it has a 4speed. I was told can't be done just rebuild your gear box. God damn it.
Hey mate, my 5 speed as just shat its self and im weighing up what to do. So it just the the loom from fuse box to passangers foot well, none of the internal body loom? Does it involve removing the dash? Can find 6 speed boxes everywhere here in nz but not many 5 speeds, and everyone says get away from the 5 speed. Any info be awesome bud
You won’t need to remove the dash. But it is ALL the wiring in the engine bay. That wraps around in to the foot wells on both front driver and passenger sides.
@@fgmods do you really need to change the drivers side loom? I just completed a conversion last night I changed everything except drivers side loom I’ve programmed the keys and linked the pcm to the bcm with my scanner only issue I have is audio code error coming up on the icc screen and no codes when I scan it Im not using a shit scanner I have a snap on triton D8 so not sure what the issue is everything else is working perfectly any help would be much appreciated thanks
Hey mate couldn’t find much information on a 5 speed swap over so I ended up here, would it be the same as a 6 speed swap over, just the 5 speed tcm in my current car and put it on the good gearbox I’m swapping in.
Ok so I'll devulged my info here. I have a 2008 Sr territory. Came factory zf6 AWD. It's now has 2012 rwd running gear in it. I didn't realise about the tcu issues before slapping it all in. Got Barra performance here on the sunshine coast to link the ecu and TCU. Drives etc fine but flash's the d symbol on dash.
I know this is an irrelevant question but I'm in the market to buy an ba or bf xr6 ute but would like to convert it from a 4 spd to 6 spd zf? What's involved if you don't mind. Cheers
Haven't watched ur whole chat . But just incase u were doing a 5speed auto to a 6speed a crowd in Adelaide do them & reboot the Computer. Approx $3500 K
The percentage difference between a 5 speed & 6 speed is 7% better economy. My best 100 k per lire usage has been as low as 7.7 ltrs per 100ks . And l havent put in the 6 speed . I have worked out my tricks . After the 6 speed upgrade my next trick ( dont ask what u cant afford ) will be 12-15% improvement well documented & proven . Then l have another one about 1 to 1.5% & l will share my very last one . Snow Performance water / methanol . Good for another 3-5% improvement. By my calculations l should at 6.1 to 6.4 ltrs per 100 ks with the XR6 ... N/A . And with the rising fuel prices l will be enjoying 4 cylinder economy.
This is the question I was going to ask but, for connecting the ZF to another engine. Let’s say I have an old in-line 6 and make a bell housing adapter etc so mechanically it all bolts together. I should be able slap in the Haltech and it should work right?
The PCM that controls ZF and the one to control 5 speed are very different. With some custom software and luck you CAN force the 5speed PCM to control a ZF if you splice the right wires. But it's never going to be as good as just swapping the PCM and wiring over.
So maybe a stupid ?? But is it a case of removing the entire 5 speed harness and replace with 6 speed harness, or is there screwing around with harnesses under dash, tracing wires etc etc. Although being time consuming and a pain in the ass, is it simply plug and play esaentially?
If you are swapping from a 5 speed to a new 5 speed, you can simply take the TCM out of your existing 5 speed and put it in the new one. This applies to the 6 speed as well. Which is how people put built ZF's in their cars without having to go through all this nonsense.

The PCM is more of an issue than the harness. Obvious you’ll need a ZF harness to plug the PCM in, but the TCM and PCM need to match.
