Welcome to another Episode of Ross Reviews AU on this weeks Video we find out if there really is a difference between the 5spd auto & the ZF 6spd! is it worth upgrading to the ZF, or can you live with a 5spd just as easily...

My ZF (and the rest of the driveline) are still going perfectly strong at 440k kms so I cant complain at all.
you legend!
I went from a 4 speed BA to a ZF 6 speed FG. The difference was very noticeable. Love the ZF.
massive difference eh
the 4 speed is horrible lol
@@thatpersiandude7386 The 4 speed is fine. 7.5 seconds to 100km/h, 15.2 second 1/4 mile, 4 seconds from 60-100 km/h - Good for overtaking. 5 and 6 speed better though clearly, yes.
love the aggressive front bumper of the mk 1's but cant lie the slickness around the mk 2 fog lights is so clean . love this review .
thanks brother :) both look so clean
@RossReviewsau what happened ross the 5 speed is quicker 😂😭
I've always preferred the look of the series 1 FG (at least in XR form)... They just look more aggressive but aren't over styled, like the series 2.
Imagine thinking the mk1 looks more aggressive than the mk2
I prefer the Mark 1 styling too.
@@benoizle The mark 1 was god awful in terms of noise, infotainment, hvac, etc
The mark 2 looked more modern with projector headlights, much better infotainment, lower noise levels due to a new bulkhead among other improvements, they fixed the aircon with a whole new system which is better than the fg & fgx. Then they went backwards on the fgx
@@ThomasFG The series 2 is a better car overall but I do think the series 1 looks better, exterior wise...
@@benoizle It is more aggressive though! Just not as overstyled as the series 2...
This makes so much sense now. I just bought a 2010 fg after writing off my 2009 fg and I noticed everything you pointed out; 6 speed has snappier gear changes / less slugish and higher fuel efficiency (i drove it down from nsw to vic on one tank compared to 5 speed i needed to refuel.). 6 speed definitelty ALOT better compared to the 5 speed apart from the higher service cost :P
Hi Mate, well I agree that the Mk1 FG XR6 was the best looking one built & the ZF box is miles better,of course I say that because I have a 2011 model lol,I've had it for 5yrs with a catback & other light mods & only put BP 98 fuel in it & I haven't had to spend 1 cent for any problems she runs like a dream Johnny, loved the review as you knew I would cheers.
Good stuff Pete.. you gotta love a good falcon eh
Own a stock XR6 limited edition 2011 with ZF 6speed auto. One that was built spot on. Daily driver for light traffic roads averaging 9.2L . Freeway driving gives 8.6L per 100km. Fair dinkum. Tranny oil changed at 120,000km. Linear response.
good stuff mate eh.. gotta love em
had mine at 9.1L per 100km, freeway driving. As soon as I take it into town. 10.3L to 11.5L
Bought a 5 speed fg xr6 with 250,000km for 6k recently, not the best transmission but does the job
That’s it mate.. they still go well.. just keep on top of them maintaining
@@RossReviewsau i think mine meeds a service
Soon after the FGs came out, I had an XR6 hire car (for work) for around 2 months... whilst it wasn't too bad on the open road, it was shocking (clunky) whilst down shifting, especially whilst going around roundabouts (and this was in a car that had less than 3,000kms on it)!!!
As someone who owns a 5 speed, completely agree. On my second transmission now. Honestly the biggest complaint is that they just REFUSE to change down unless you floor it
Same. Mine is clunky and jarring as
Shes still fast as fk tho
@ljk8946 same but my 5 isnrefusing to channge gears alot now and not even responding when it should teying to put power down amd sometimes nothing happens when i put the foot down. im getting 6 speed zf now because the car is just running like crap alot of the time especially in heat. it was fast once now its whenever it feels like it which isnt much.
These are some really interesting videos, things that all falcon owners/buyers have thought about and discussed but there's never really been any good info on them in this format. Great video.
I was hoping people would appreciate it 😁
@@RossReviewsau we do appreciate it! Thanks Ross
The ratios on the 5 speed are good as the torquey standard Barra is a good match but the issue with the 5 speeders or French Borg Warner ( the 5R-55s) is all about reliability and are a bit hit and miss with them, they have problems and are used in older Ford explorers, mustangs etc, the main problem is with the Servo bores that wear and elongate and hydraulic pressure is lost , you can get them bushes but is not a permanent fix and there is a lot of other problems with them just google up 5R-55 series of transmissions and look for yourself, my 5 speed failed at 85,000 Kay’s a few years back now and Suggest people steer clear of the 1st gen cars
Had both, give me ZF 6-Speed any day!
I've rebuilt heaps of 5r55s out of rangers. Absolutely shit boxes
agree i would stay clear from 5 speeds.. really worth finidnig a zf
The 5spd struggles from a dig because the ratio for first is insanely tall lol, 80kph in first gear!
It would've been interesting to pin the throttle instead of stalling it, can see the RPM's artificially drop as the ECU manages and reduces power.
The same 5spd's were also used in the Ford Courier 4L V6, and were known for failures.
im used to launching the turbo ones where you need to pre load them
Didn't even realise they had a 5 speed auto. I thought all FG's were the ZF 6. Definitely worth the extra coin
To quickly identify the difference, the shifter in ZF has the mohawk, the 5 Speed is just silver.
I think the ZF was optional on earlier cars...
def worth the extra coin ;)
My mum and sister have the ZF and I'm stuck with 5R55S.... And I can tell you what there certainly is a difference.
The 5spd is clunky, unrefined, unreliable, slow and always slips going into 3rd.
Her car with 40,000 more kilometres feels much better then mine in every aspect.
Another thing, only the FG Series 1 cars made in 2008-09 had the 5 speed. As the the factory which made them was sold in 09. 09-11 series 1 FG's had the ZF.
your not wrong.. going back to back you can def feel the smoothness in the ZF.. overall the better box in all aspects
I'm staring at a 2008 XR6 with a ZF right now
FG series 1 was standard with 5 speed you had the option to upgrade to the 6 speed.
@@RossReviewsau Probably comes down to the ZF having its own controller in the transmission VS the 5 speed running off the engines ECU.
If it slips going in 3rd you have serious problems not just a 5 speed charactoristic
This is purely on feel so no data to back it up but when I 'gun it' off the lights in my parents XR6 it feels faster if you don't floor the pedal initially. Ie give it say half initially and then quickly (not all at once) floor the pedal as the car gets going.
I found 'flooring it' from the start gives that slow feel off the mark that you were talking about
I just worked that out yesterday in my 5 speed takimg off from lights. Other way though is to hold foot on brakes and rev it up enough and release the brakesas you floor it. I give the sv6 a good run but i was running 98 in it. Found out a few weeks ago i might have been running with a bad air system though as the last mechanics didn't even put the air system tubes on properly. I was wondering why it was drinking petrol but has been better since i think.
5 Speed US design
6 Speed German design
There is obviously going to be differences in shifting and refinement between the two.
It would be interesting to find out the weight difference between them,
german design for the win
Do you know where the Borg Warner T5 was originally designed ? US hmmmm, it was Australia, in the early 1970s Chrysler Australia went to Borg Warner Australia wanting a 4 speed Trans the result was the Borg Warner D20 Single Rail 4 Speed, using a lot of Ford Top loader ideas, the Single Rail went on to be in six and V8 Ford's , Six and V8 Chrysler's , then at the end of its run when 5 speeds were needed , Borg Warner US needed a good box but 5 speed , our 4 speed single rail got a redesigned case in alloy , ( same internals ) and an outboard 5 th overdrive gear , the T5 was born and used everywhere , it shows its Single Rail heritage by all the common parts , and the fact you can unbolt a ford single rail and just slide in a T5 , same input shaft , clutch , mounts , stick position , output shaft and bellhousing . We gave the US the box , they hung a 5th gear outside the case .
@@JosephCowen-fz8vj I was talking about the 5 speed auto not the manual, FG manual would have been the T56 Six speed manual.
@@morantaylor yes I realised later , but left it in , as not many know the story of Borg Warner Australia and their contribution to many of the world's transmissions .
@@JosephCowen-fz8vj Australia was wonderful.
I thought fuel economy will be very different depending how much the car cruises. My brother drove the 5 speed from Piara Waters to City West for 3 years as a daily driver, average consumption was down to 9.9L/100km, I started using it frequently between Manning and Vic Park/Belmont, it blew up to 12.6L/100km. Love the wheels on the Mk1
def depends on what your doing but even from factory the 5spd was rated slightly worse.. but being a big straight 6, fuel consumption is never that impressive
@@RossReviewsau been hoping to get mine converted.
@@toby182 its a massive headache trust me
Nice review
Had the 5 speed in a xr6, lasted to 140k then had it rebuilt and slightly built up to handle the Barra, made a huge difference.. was a lemon of a car.. I’d probably never own a fg ever again unless it’s a GT or F6
fair call.. 5spds i would avoid for sure
@@RossReviewsau Just look for a Turbo they all were standard with the ZF 6 speed.
Mine just went yesterday, booked in for a complete rebuild and built up in a months time. $6k total cost, would you say it’s worth it. Only planning on owning the car for another couple of years.
@@doormatt9320dude why... why didn't you just put in a 6 speed instead
my 5 speed auto xr6 fg died at 105,000 kms 7k to fix (no way ), sold it and bought a 2012 ve z series ute 6 speed MANUAL :) , better handling car, better looking just better all round
I know it doesn't seem right, but don't break boost it, for some reason they prefer a idle smash on the throttle
I just wrote the same thing then read this comment
Yep. If you cant get a ZF6 to launch quick, theres something wrong.
this is a good point.. ill try that next time
I think got the wheels spinning on take off doing that yesterday
My biggest consideration when purchasing an FG was the transmission. I did not want to put up with the issues of the 5 speed so opted to get a model with the 6 speed.
I also drive 130kms round trip for work, on highways, so fuel economy was another factor. The factory extra urban fuel consumption figure for the 5 speed is higher than the 6 speed (8.2L/100km vs 7.2L/100km, respectively). My Falcon is currently averaging 7.8L/100km so every bit of fuel saving helps, thanks to the extra ratio
Excellent fuel economy for a 2 ton, 4 litre 6 cylinder car
I would say that was a smart decision mate
Let's see how many 5 speed owners out here✋
Yep, in a ute
always up the AU
Been a yr and no replies
Would like to say i have a 5 speed😌
🙋♂️
🤘
I got a cheap 09 g6 and I just assumed they were all ZF6, annoyed at myself that I didn't know about the 5. Ah well I got the tranny serviced at 140k and it's been good but I def notice that severe thrash at times and also a clunk in the driveline going from 3 to 2, workshop said that's common and dw...
On a good note I'm running at 9.3L so can't complain plus I don't intend to set any land records.
Great topic and vid mate, cheers.
cheers for sharing! i think thats it as long as your not intending on going all out with mods.. you can still have fun with a 5 spd :) just gotta look after it a bit more
i bought an XT 2010 6 months ago and im damn thankful its got the ZF 6spd trans. as i never knew about these failures before i bought mine! pretty lucky i guess
Mate, you're making me feel like a grandma! I've just got 12.7 from my BF MkII 4 speed over almost 1000km of city driving.
lol well these are tuned also remember
hahaha, I get approx 13.8 from the AWD territory with the 4sp and as low as 9.5 sitting at 105km on cruise between Horsham and Adelaide. not sure if thats due to the LPG plugs I have in a non lpg
@@gore1978 sounds about right...
Whilst the ZF 6 speed is great, the 5 speed is no slouch either, and is quicker on the spec sheets than the 6 speed from 60-100km/h.
An owner of one of these cars should be very happy with either transmission.
Also note there are various versions of the ZF 6 speed. There is the stock six cylinder version, and the turbo/v8 HP version which is much stronger.
Many people think they can have 1000hp with the weaker ZF but eventually find out they are sorely mistaken.
So before considering a swap or buying a full car with a six speed for future mods such as a turbo, be sure to get the HP ZF, not the standard ZF.
Horror stories regarding both transmissions exist, from the milkshaking in the 5 speed, to the extreme cost of repairing the six speed.
In the end, both have pros and cons, a buyer or owner should not worry too much about which trans is 'best', the main thing is the trans is kept in top shape.
Peace.
ZF for the win
Depends how you drive your car. I have a Mk1 FG 93K kms with the 5spd, you sort of need to match the revs as the auto shifts. Hard to explain, I'd still rather the ZF though ;)
Question is when I change it over one day should I go ZF or just convert to 6spd manual?
B roads 6MT drag strip ZF
Exactly this, I was confused when I first got my 5spd and for the first two months I got used to "matching" the revs to avoid the weird shifting the trans does, but other than that its been going strong for 240xxx. Will definitely upgrade to a 6spd though, hopefully a turbo taxi this time.
6 speed manual ... all the way
That’s pretty quick considering the xr8 did a 6.83 and the xr6t did a 6.15.
I think that was before you had your dragy as well so they might be even slower
not bad.. was thinking would go a little more tho, being tuned
@@RossReviewsau yeah same! Pretty much this build or an N/a + T vs the stock fg turbo would be what I would’ve loved.
Then SS vs everything 😆
6.15 for an XR6T is pretty slow. It should do low-mid 5s easily.
@@alstound well the v8 was meant to be faster, it’s just the usual car company’s over exaggeration how fast their cars are. However the draggy and vbox may not be perfectly accurate. If they are a second off then that can make a big difference. That then would mean the n/a is quicker as well. The times don’t need to matter anyway because this is just a random street check. But if you do the same thing with each car then at least it’s fair and they were close.
@@samthestoryman3757yeah draggy is pretty decent thought and those times of 7.2 and 6.8 for the xr8 so t suprise me to much on the other hand companies like vw and volvo mostly ised to underrate their cats by quite anit like 0.5 seconds or more.
As someone who has had a five speed for 4 years, the biggest complaint is that they DONT CHANGE DOWN in drive. Unless you basically come to a complete stop, it will stay in third going 20kmph up a hill and it is so FRUSTRATING
cheers for the owner feed back mate
I had a FG with the 5 speed in 2014 it did the same. ford replaced the trans under warranty. was fine after that.
Fuel economy wise depends on the driver. I thrash my 08 FG XR6 with ZF6 all the time. My avg eco is 17km per 100 on 95, 98 just disappears. Also the ecu adapts to the driver, my mums preserved FG2 XR6 is sluggish compared to my thrashed FG1 XR6.
That lag at the start is to help from damage to the transmission.. same as if you rev the engine in neutral fuel cut out will kick in at 4000rpm to prevent damage...
The 5 speed looked like it was faster 40-100 but the ZF was quicker 0-40 and looked slower 40-100 but more linear overall as you say
I really do reckon 5 speeds go harder than ZF's in terms of power. (If you're lucky or not)
I raced my friend who had a xr650 (2010) (zf of course) from the lights, and I was able to get in front of him off the bat. Both completely stock, my 5spd really holds it nice. Even caught an Audi S3 off guard when they tried to cut me off at a two lane into one a couple of days ago.
But then again, I am quite confused by the "horror stories" of 5 spds as mine has held strong as balls for 240xxx k's, and launches like new every time.
Maybe I just got really lucky..
@@stockie6 is she still running good now, bc I recently just got a FG 0'9 xr6 with the 5 speed and she's seems fucking nice to drive and has the power if you want it
@@mrpastanicknuggets7269 yeah still nice to drive, no dramas. I may upgrade to the "ZF" to see what all the fuss is about once it blows though ahhaha. But yeah man 5spd ain't too much headache, i guess as long as you don't flog it 24/7 it should go strong for quite awhile.
Nice video mate, I really like the Falcons I haven’t owned one yet but I have had owned 2 Toyota Aurions(GSV40R and currently GSV50R) and they often achieve between 6 and 7.5 seconds to 100 stock. I was very surprised with the amount of work done to these Falcons that there not quicker than my stock Aurion.
ive been looking for a Aurion! been tough to find the right one.. will do one soon i hope
@@RossReviewsau Awesome mate! I really like your channel, I just discovered it the other day. I have a small UA-cam channel my self.
My Aurion is the top of the range Presara (luxury variant not sportivo but they all have the same engine etc.) in really good clean stock condition. (Apart from some very minor paint chips up close) so if your ever in Canberra hit me up for a collaboration or something. 👍🏼
aurions arent rear wheels drive :)
But aren’t aurions like 200kw stock anyway
@@vibeconnect9442 Yes correct. Falcons have bit less power but more torque.
Good video, I owned a 2009 FG 5 speed from new. Traded it in when the Spanish transmission failed .... lost use of 3rd gear. Repair cost estimated at $4,000. I thought about getting the series 2 with ZF 6 speed but went back to a Mazda6 - reliable, smooth, well finished, well equipped and did everything I need. The Ford had lots of grunt but simply not as nice a car even if RWD.
Spanish transmission?????
I had a BA2 XR6 with 5 speed and it didn’t last long as I like to drive my falcons to its full potential, thrash it. My BF Fairlane with ZF6 has taken a good thrashing and has out lived my old BA2. Now I have a FG1 XR6 with the ZF6 to take the punishment, 93.X69km later still strong
It would be great to review the transmissions of the other two big sixes, the Aurion and 380. I won't hold my breath Me Ross.
I’m keen on that comparison in general!
My car history is lame because Ive never had much money, in saying that, I’ve had an au 4 speed, zl fairlane 3 speed, ba 4 speed, fg mk2 6 speed and now i have and fg xr6 mk1 5 speed in that order and I have to say to anyone hating on the 5 speed it’s my favourite. I’m not saying it’s the best hands down but it’s why I prefer for sure 👍🏿 love your vids Ross
They cam the na’s to get the added power. When you put a bigger cam in you sacrifice low end for top end so makes sense that they’re lazy of the line. Ive got an na fg series 1 myself and knowing what I know now I would have gone newer to get the zf. I think a turbo will work quite well on mine, bang for buck beats na upgrades. Nice work on the review! This was just what I was after!
thanks for clearing that up with the mods.. as we were all a bit stumped thinking they would go a little faster
What cams you talking about sorry? There are that many options in cams putting a bigger one won't necessarily give you more top end depends on the cam specs ect 🤦♂️
@@Juicyshadowz I had the orange one for a few years and did a bit of the work. No cams, just breathing mods and tune. Unfortunately getting them out of the hole from standstill, as well as having a boot full of gear and 2 bodies in the back seat kills the 0 to 100 times. With just the driver it pulls noticeably better. Just not enough torque down low to improve that 0 to 40km/h time unfortunately.
@@dalejustins7117 yeah NA barra just a money pit for minimal gains, AU days NA was the rave but ones the turbo came out in ba onwards NA was on back burner. But 6 speed zf always be king i had a zf fg xr6t back in 2012 with 400rwkw back when it was rare and 1 year old fg xr6t was 34k from dealer but nowadays you need sell a kidney to buy a fg 🤣🤣🤣🤦♂️
@@Juicyshadowz you can get cam and tune packages from places such as independent Motorsport ect, thought maybe they’ve gone that route. Have seen 190kw but again you sacrifice bottom end. But yeah car full makes a big difference aswell. Turbos are the way to go though. You can sill make as much as a mild factory turbo and keep it somewhat safe
Hi ross, I own a xr6 with the 6speed I feel the the best for launch is using triptronic and really hold out first gear
gotta really send it eh
@@RossReviewsau yeah pretty much 😂
Biggest let down was the 2.73 final drive ratio in 6sp ZF falcons, give it an EcoBoost 3.27 final drive & i reckon they'd move alot better.
At the expense of economy.
that would help a lot! be keen to see one with that set up
@@RossReviewsau I'm going to be swapping 3.27's into my G6E in the near future. Only issue is the 3.27's only came in the M80 diff, not the M86.
But i'm sure there's similar gear sets for M86's too.
@@RossReviewsau I'm working on it, so next time you're in Melbourne i'll hit you up.

Cheers tony appreciate it
For 200kw Ross they seem to struggle alot. My MK2 is a zf and it made 171kw atw with the zf tune. and mine hits 0/100 in 5.9 seconds. Only has a cat back exhaust and 3 inch intake with stock airbox.
I think he meant 200kw at the motor, as they’re 195 kw stock
Mate, he had 2 blokes in the back, a boot and a boot full of stuff. He was never gonna set any NA fg records.
I agree. They seem to be struggling… my MK2 just has high flow cat and extractors + 2.5” system (2 mufflers) and on a safe tune of 180rwkw my 0-100 is 6.2 seconds. Can 100% get a better time as when I tested it, weather wasn’t the best (hot). So I wouldn’t doubt you get 5.9 seconds… I haven’t touched anything in the bay. Well, not until I am ready to throw a turbo into it and chase higher figures 😅
Interesting to see if any difference trying launching off the handbrake, the transmissions have built in torque reduction when you stall them up.
yeh it def was not liking me trying to build them up
the diff ratio in the six speed is also longer fairly sure 2.73 where as the 5spds only 3.08 fairly sure so that would affect these times heaps!
yes your right
They are both 2.73 my 5 speed is 2.73
Well technically mines actually 3.73 now 😅😂 just don’t worry about economy
My dad owned two ford xr6s with the same zf gear box
good cars!
They are
I have a G6E Mk1 with the ZF. Stock standard but still get to 100 in 7.5s. It runs so damn well.
you gotta love the ZF
FG is a bloody good car.
One of the best of the bests
Everytime I watch your videos I go for a burn in my 2009 FG afterwards 😂
😂😂 good stuff mate
I will say shorter Diff gears go a long way to making a 5 spd quicker
As well as preserving the 5 spds life a bit longer by taking load off the gearbox a bit better
I remember on the xr6tubo forums, that the rule of thumb was the manual's would lose around 17% and the ZF's around the 23% mark when it comes to drive line loss.
Manuals also have better fuel economy.
manual is always my choice.. but ZF for autos 100%
honestly people often forget to look at what fuel they are each running everyone preferences is different but some are certainly better than other. even the station you go to makes a difference honestly..we are getting ripped in this country with everything
Do a comparison with a ECOLPI fg xr6 and Petrol will be a good comparison as the ECOLPI are much quicker off the line
Up the Germans for the zf 6🤙churr bro for vid
The ZF 6 speed is used in a whole host of cars around the world... Which is a good thing!
def the best eh my bro
Was there a turbo variant available? I’m still new to all these sport/performance sedans available in Oz
XR6's could have turbos (making them XR6T's), as well as G6E's. In the FG the base I6 made 195kW. The Turbo varients made 270kW. Both are very tunable.
In the FG's it is really ZF or bust. The 5 speeds crap themselves. Unless you want a manual, these are more often than not slower, but they are just as reliable and some consider them more fun.
@@jamesrichardson645 thanks James. I got a question for you if you wouldn’t mind. The turbo version of the barra what’s the most powerful version that was available to the public? I love the unique sound of them and I know an American YTer put one in a Mustang but they’re not readily available here.
@@chrisdooley6468 The most powerful stock I6 Barra Turbo was called the Barra 325T, and made 325kW. However, I must note that the engine will, in its stock form will actually output 370kW by increasing the boost pressure under 'correct conditions', i.e. temperature and pressures are within a certain range. You can read more about them here: en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ford_Barra_engine#Barra_325T
You could import a Ford Barra engine to the States. Plenty of them available and a wealth of information on them out there. In NA or turbo they perform well
I have a Barra in a BF Mkii Fairmont, only a 4 speed (BTR) transmission, but it goes hard. Stock engine, but has aftermarket tow springs (sligntly lifted). It drives much nicer now, it really is a pleasure to drive due to its insane low end power.
The best car I have ever driven is still a BF G8 Fairlane with the 230kw V8 'Barra' (not really a true barra, but they are still called that), it gets freakin 7l/100km on the motorway, and with simple exhaust and removal of the intake restriction pipe, makes 250kw at the wheels lol. Absolute beast.
This channel should be called ford falcon reviews 80 percent content is the ford Barra

Can't help but think this video is several years too late. I don't know how it is in the Eastern states but where I am good low mileage examples are few and far between. Too hard to find to be picky about what auto trans you can get!
I bought my 2010 XR6 less than 3 months ago. 1 owner, 70k, always garaged and completely unmodified. It drives like a new car and strangely I've never worried about it having the 5 speed auto.
I hope no-one's take from this video and some of the ridiculous comments is that they must get the 6 speed because you could end up waiting a long time for the right car.
it is hard to be picky now.. but if at all possible this video helps tell people its worth the extra cash to get into a ZF or manual
They’re not bad it’s just they mainly alloy so at about 200,000k’s they just naturally shit themselves from all the wear
Yup maintenance maintenance maintenance 👨🔧
The series 1 looks much better than the series 2, that lower bumper grill on the series two looks terrible compared to the much sportier looking series 1 lower bumper.
I totally agree!
agree but both look good i think

cheers man.. ill find one eventually
Is the 5 speed the 5R55S that the S197 Mustang got or something else?
Edit: Just looked it up; it is. That explains a lot about the driver's experience.
Got my 5 speed mk1 converted to a 6 speed today after my second 5 speed transmission died. It's way better.

will u ever do video about Toyota Aurion series 1 (GSV40) and series 2 (GSV50) 😬?
If you can find one for me to review in Perth I’m interested 😅
@@RossReviewsau how do we contact you? i can arrange one for ya
@@aurionlover4128 send me a DM on insta or FB :)
Do the TRD version!
Go neutral then rev more then put it in drive 😮💨

What's it got Stuntman
thats playing with fire in a 5spd! haha
My FG ute is 5 speed, it’s a pretty average transmission, would like to convert it to 6 speed soon
Expensive but if you plan to never sell it.. worthy upgrade
I find in the 5 speed fg stalling it up .akes it slower. If you sit at lights and stand on it from idle it will break traction.
But if I stall it up it does a weird hold back thing that dulls it down and no spin feeling doughy.
that could have been a part of the issue.. i did think they were gonna go a bit harder
Torque reduction system in the transmission traction control doesn’t help
It's a good gearbox untill you start having problems, I learn the best way
That sounds like it eh😅 when they detonate they detonate
@@RossReviewsau haven't seen that yet but I can feel her travelling down that path
My Xr50 na does a 13.8 1/4 mile
Long live the 4 speed lol
😂 soon to come the battle between the zf and BTR🤣
@@RossReviewsau why bother btr is king. Haha 🤣
The 5 Speed was actually a French made transmission. I knew a fellow who had one in his FG Ute and hated it. The ZF 6 speed is much better.
That explains a lot
It might be made in france but it is a ford usa design and who cares what you and your nuffy mate says.
@@mickwarnie8707 What crap. No wonder we cancelled the French Subs that were Nuclear but were going to be turned into U-Boats in France. The ZF was just a better fit for the Australian Barra motor. Okay!
@@arunta5 Because your mate said lol
@@mickwarnie8707 He was not my mate a random person driving a utility that had that transmission. I asked him if it had it and how it was. He said terrible. My previous Ford Sedan was a nice car but had problems. The issue here is the ZF transmission and its suitability with the Australian Barra engine NOT the fact the 5 speed was made in France. Ford parts (like Boeing) are made all over the world.
In Sports Mode 5 SPD xr6 goes 1-2-3-4-5-D this is 6 speed 5 is lower than D.
The Sports Mode 6 spd xr6 has 7 speeds if using Sports mode and dropping into D after 6.
Oh what a load of rubbish
Lol D is not an extra Gear ⚙️
@@RossReviewsau Sports mode gives you less gears and each one hangs on longer. Not to confuse it with manual shift mode. But either way there is no extra gear.
D a higher ratio to either s5 or s6 which ever system you are driving. Last comment, have proven this over and over, watch your tachometer.
@@km-gi4lw what on earth are talking about? The 5 speed in sports mode becomes a 4 speed. Can you count?
"Do you want the red car... or the blue car?"
NEO M8 lol
Yeah but, haha haha, the five speed is a big step up from the BTR four speed and doesn't require the dear ZF fluid and costs about the same as the BTR to rebuild.
i think the btr is better.. but might have to compare them to really see lol
I drove a BF cab for three years and rented a silver XR6 around 2010 and that extra cog made a massive difference. It was a very nice car to drive except for the slightly woolly steering. The BF is a better looking car though.
@@jamesfrench7299fg is heaps better looking and better in every way
You ever tried launching while just in normal drive mode? I don't use performance mode because it doesn't seem to do anything for me.. I'll get wheel spin on most launches but I got big 20 inch low profiles on so it grips great. I still got a stock na 5 speed and I swear my box is about to blow because instead of it going into 3rd or 4th it just free revs and doesn't want to go into gear it's actually pretty dangerous I think because you just don't know when it's going to go into gear and stop revving. Especially if I'm giving the accelerator a good push and I boost forward and or especially if I turn a corner. I swear it must be low on trans fluid or it's dirty inside. I dunno man but these 5 speeds are so weird.
Its slipping nuffy which means its stuffed not just weird in style.
How did they go from 265 crank horse power to 270 rwhp? That’s a massive gain..
Not bad eh. That’s quite a common power figure for these to achieve though with just an intake, full exhaust and tune
full exhaust (+ headers) , CAI, & a tune :)
I've owned both, ZF6 is just far superior. and stronger. wayyyy stronger. you'll have a hard time destroying it. especially NA
Yup night and day difference
Why do people, particularly ricers put a strip across the top of their headlights? Is it to make them look slimmer, sleeker?
lol each to their own
Eyelids are gay asf on fg's
Dump the ballast 🤣 you got the same as your 4 cylinder test (these 6s were tuned too.)
It's 'apples with apples' not 'apples with oranges'. How about stock tune 4 vs stock tune 6 ?
T400 the world
NOLSKY M8! Up a T400 lol
Yeah the Ross dog!
😎🇦🇺👍
Those wheels on the S1
not behd eh
what is the launch control app that you use
Dragy you need the device to tho
They do achieve their factory fuel consumption figures easily, if you're doing 12.something per 100 it's your fault...
The 0-100 should be done from idle in drive, this will show you how bad the 5 actually is... yes I have one
haha.. the 5 is not great eh
Pssh get the powerhouse i have… 09 MK1 with the MONSTER BTR 4 speed.
up the BTR lol
Hey Ross
where can i buy the device from and what brand is it
thanks
Dragy you have to order them online

5 speeds ain’t bad it’s just they always have gear slips or no gears at all🤦🏾
HAHA RIP
What fuel are both of these running on? 95 or 98.
id guess 98 im not sure what the tune was put to
Fuel consumption 12k's per 100 🤣🤣 thats great economy, mines 39 at the moment (poor tune and cam'd) best it ever was was 18/100
Yeh the Falcon 🤙
You'd be visiting the servo a lot and making the oil companies rich!

I meant 12lt... 🤪
City driving?
@@rabidsminions2079 yeh mostly not alot of stop start traffic, some decent runs, but it should have come back down by now, you can smell the fuel too
My 5 speed started to get a delayed engagement when trying to take off in drive at about 190,000 km. At 200,000 km it does it more frequently do you have any idea why this happens?
Transmission issues probably...
@@MartinJones123 l know that lol, but what?
@@mickwarnie8707 Could be computer maybe? Does it have any engine codes? Have you ever changed the fluid? Do you have a scan tool, even a mobile phone one is fine...

@@mickwarnie8707 Okay, sort it out yourself then... Just trying to help...
For a turbo what’s better, the zf auto or 6 speed manual?
depends what you want.. engagement 6mt for sure.. but for speed.. ZF always wins
@@RossReviewsau such a tough decision 😂
Do a btr vs zf
I’ll try that
Could be worse cough…4L60E…cough
Yeah... That wasn't a good transmission to suit the commodore engines...
6 speed gets to just over 60 kms in1st gear and the 5 speed gets over 80 kms in 1 st gear.
sounds about right
No difference in performance or economy.
Reliability on 5spd is not good. Has quite a few weak areas. Servos, bearings and clutches
there is a difference
I swear I have a 6 speed series 1 2009 is that possible?
its possible.. im pretty sure it was an optional upgrade
I got 5 speed auto fg 200 k on it never had problems with the gearbox then again I drive like a old fart .
