- The Airbus A400M Atlas makes its large-scale, international exercise debut at Mobility Guardian.
The A400M was designed by Airbus Military (now Airbus Defence and Space) as a tactical airlifter with strategic capabilities to replace older transport aircraft. The A400M is positioned, in terms of size, between the C-130 and the C-17; it can carry heavier loads than the C-130, while able to use rough landing strips. Along with the transport role, the A400M can perform aerial refueling and medical evacuation when fitted with appropriate equipment. (en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Airbus_A400M_Atlas)
Both the Royal Air Force and French Air Force have brought this aircraft. It has a range of 4,000 miles and carries 116 passengers.

The A400M is terrific but I don't think it'll ever replace the C-130 in the special mission role (MC-130, AC-130 etc)
The USAF have been considering replacing both the C130 and C17 since 2014. When the C130 goes out of service, it will be sadly missed. It’s one of the most capable aircraft ever. But you can only upgrade the airframes so many times. The A400M is a good size for today modern needs, but I doubt the USAF would buy it - political reasons.
I saw this thing land at Yakima Air Terminal the other day as part of the exercise. It had to have been the most wicked thing I've ever seen land at such a quiet little airport.
One of these has been landing at teesside airport in the last week. It’s a big aircraft and an impressive site in the sky.

All that technology and the Mk1 Hand remains the best way of cockpit communicating with ground 🤗
The hand signals on engine start are to inform personnel on the ground, the crew chief has a headset to talk to the pilots

This flies over our home all the time as does A400M "Comet" Boeing E-3D Sentry and their C-17, Nice planes but when they are over our home they are only about 1450 feet so incredibly loud.
Great video!! The A-400 is such a beautiful aircraft and I noticed the similar technology shape of it's tail section to the C-17. PS- And it sure does taxi fast :-).
Not so beautiful (my opinion). Apart the proportions, I find very more elegant and aerodynamic the C27J Spartan. Ok, it's a 2 engines, but for me the best (and it flight like a fighter...).

Really think Airbus did right choosing turboprop over pure jet powerplant for this aircraft. Otherwise, I don't know much about the A-400 but if mission availability is close to the C-130; C-17, then I think this could be the superior type.

would be interesting if the US bought some. they don't really have anything in this category and c17s are starting to be retired and the widebody c130 project was cancelled. it's not as good / cheap as the an70 but ukraine is finished as an aircraft manufacturer.

Much as I love the c130,this one looks so much more high tech,I even went to jet school this one of the engines I learn on ,but this A400 ,looks like a real update,I wonder if it can do all the roles of a c130 ,like it could take off with rockets it is a gun ship troup transport and shipping transport and the list goes on ,it could carry large extrea fuel tanks,the c130 hell of a work horse,I hope the A400 works out well.I wonder if we will buy any.

Sorry, I’m not knowledgeable about airplanes and their way of design, however can someone explain to me why props are still favoured for cargo airplane? Is it because it’s easier to maintain? I always thought jet engines like on the C17 are better for cargo carrying.

If I'm not wrong, these are the world's biggest and powerful turboprop engines. Mirror spin (and other factors, like the state-of-the-art gearbox) contributes to contain the engine's mechanics solicitations to wings/plane.
+M.Walter. They're the largest/most powerful _Western_ turboprops. The World's most powerful are the 65+ year old Soviet/Russian Kuznetsov NK-12, which power the Tu-95 Bear & a few other aircraft, plus their enormous Zubr hovercraft & A-90 Orlyonok ekranoplan.
+Mike M. The engines are all the same. The direction is determined by the gearbox.
+P.N. One purpose of counter-rotation is to cancel out torque, which can have a negative effect on aircraft handling, but a lot of other aerodynamic & structural benefits have been created & exploited too. The phrase 'Down Between Engines' (DBE) has been coined to describe the A400M prop rotation. There's far too much information for a yt post, so I'd recommend you Google it if you're interested.

The Herc engines are nowhere near powerful enough. This aircraft is significantly heavier and bigger

It's not supposed to compete directly with the C-17 and C-130J. It is supposed to be an aircraft for customers that want something in the middle of the two in size. The C-17 is unfortunely no longer made.

Very on short haul. Better for the environment too. In the case of a "tactical delivery aircraft" such as the A400M, it also allows the aircraft to use unsurfaced runways, which a jet engine cannot do.
Also, fun fact about the A400M, it's cruise speed is about 140 km/h faster than a C130J. It's takeoff distance is less than 100ft more than a C130J and the range is pretty much the same as a C130J at maximum payload, except the A400M's payload is practically double that of the C130J

Matic 1 at a time, usually one at a time on 99% of the aircarft in the world. Not enough power to go two at a time, and it's not really safe.
A very little turbo engine onboard called Apu (Auxiliary Power unit) provides compressed air for mains engines, so it can start one at a time because the big mass begin to turn departing from zero turns. Just first turbine reach about 28% of speed rotation, it can autonomously continue the lighting because now has reached a minimum of speed, and can continue to accelerate by itself.
So drawn air from Apu can be sent to following turbine. Apu can't produce enough pressure for contemporary start of engines so big. Sorry for my english, I hope is clear.
