Thank you so much for this tutorial. No one had ever explained to me that you want to have the main fabric flat and then stretch only the neckband. I've been stretching them together and, of course, getting puckers LOL! And the hump-jumper trick is priceless - bravo for teaching this old dog some new tricks :-)

Hi. Yes, like Brenda, it was good to have a refresher. I haven't sewn with knit fabric for a lot of years but have some fabric in my stash. I think the tips you've showed (dividing into 8) makes sense - sewing becomes easier straight away. Thanks again for sharing

Thank you for marking into eighths! I always lose a pin when I’ve done it in quarters; eighths should be a lot better. Oh, and the tip about .8 is the best! I had always looked in my sewing books and they had me do a stretch test, then figure percentage, yadda yadda. What a pain! The .8 makes much more sense for me; it’s easier to remember!

Thank you! I truly avoid knit bindings/necklines perhaps that is why I rarely make tshirts or knit tops. I have ruined a couple of knit dress necklines in part because I almost always change the neckline depth. I very much needed this and so appreciate your sharing your expertise!

I just sewed a neckline. The front is standi g up a little. Does that mean the band wasn't stretched enough? Also, you said to top stitch. Do you do that with the same zig zag you used?

Kim, Thank you for your videos. I've subscribed. I've enjoyed several of your videos over the last few weeks. This one, on neckbands, is particularly helpful. I'm a newbie. (I think the name of your channel "Dorothy's Daughter" is lovely. There was a time when I was known as "Winnie's daughter" by a group of people who my mother had helped with her wise advice. When they found out I was "Winnie's daughter" they would smile and glow with delight and enthusiastically share with me the fact my mother's advice had helped them. Your channel's name "Dorothy's Daughter" makes me smile."

It drives me crazy when seamstresses on YT use the shoulder seams as the neck circumference divider. Thank you so much for stressing this! The hints of .8 and the zigzag width and length are very helpful. I love to sew, but avoid knits. I think I’ll try that dress for my granddaughter ive been putting off. I wish you’d shown the top stitching to finish off the seam. Did you Topstitch to the band or body of the project?

I too was not aware that you stretch only the neck band. It has been years since I have done neckbands but I was taught back-in-the-day 40 years ago I think it was to cut my two-thirds of the size of the neck. That's why I used to come up with Puckers I'm sure. What I'm wondering is how wide do you make the neckband I didn't catch that.

I was just going to start on a neckband but watched this first. I've made 2 round neckbands and 2 Vs so far with no issues. I was basting the two raw edges of the neckband together and then basting the neckband to the opening after pinning in 8ths. The reason I was doing the basting was the fabric on the bottom, the neck opening would not get caught by the serger threads. I was sewing very slowly and adjusting along the way as well. After seeing this video and learning that the only the neckband should stretch I pulled out my basting and tried to duplicate what was shown in the video It went smoothly but in 4 places the neckband edge did not catch. I'm going to unpick and start over. Is there any advice you can give me?

I need a clarification please. When you said, " go to .8" do we multiply the neckband circumference by .8 or divide it by .8?
Not to be confused with dividing into 1/8ths for sewing, that I understood perfectly. Just the math part has me stumped, I get jelly brained when I hear the word math!

Thank you so much! This really explained it in a way I needed. I do have a question. If you don't have a serger, do you do anything else to finish that seam? You mentioned topstitching, but I didn't see you do that at the end. So for those of us without a serger, are there any other steps we take after the end of the video or just make sure it's tucked in when we wear it? THANKS!!!

    • @dorothysdaughtersews

I topstitch the seam allowance down to the garment side. I use a coverstitch, machine, but if you don’t have one, just use that same narrow zig zag I showed you. I did that for years without a serger.
