This is such an important video. My handicap went down 3 strokes just by gripping it more securely in both hands while keeping my arms and forearms loose.
It's a talking point of ours for sure, and hard to convey. A little different for everyone. If I can ever be of further help to you in learning to Swing Like an Athlete, please do check out my website at milolinesgolf.com for in-person or online lessons, golf schools, or to become a member of my Online Academy.
One thing I've found and it's just my personal exploration is that it's about being able to disconnect the tension from the forearms and the hands. I've had a tight very tense grip and noticed my arms had a lot of tension and whilst I swing on plane, it's lacked that little shallowing due to the tension and rigidity. I've learned to soften it down, hold the club enough to control but for me it feels like everything has got softer and much more fluid. Its allowed my body turn to help get the club In place rather than forcing it with my arms which I've always done. Great video. Dare I suggest I'll be watching this back again in a months time hahaha this game is hard but it's the best
Really happy that you pointed out that the club had closes/ stays square as you eternally rotate the trail arm, it's unclear some times when instructors show that move they often let their hand get wide open. As someone trying to learn, I have to feel like I'm closing the face as the trail arm externally rotates to get square at impact without flipping.
This is an element in all 'hitting ball' sports. In table tennis our coach wants us to apply pressure to the thumb and forefinger during contact with the ball but fell more relaxed on the takeaway, the transition and the building up of momentum before the 'hit'. I will experiment a bit more with this. Cheers!
This is so true. I was finally able to hit multiple balls in a row without regripping. The club was moving in my hands. I had to feel like a 10 in practice and now im at a 7. I guess when my fingers get stronger with repetition it will feel less on the scale of 1 to 10.
I feel people think the supination is opening because the first thing that usually happens is a right slice or a right shank. When really i would assume the open face is cause by not rotating through or could also be a grip pressure issue/ a combo of the two
Great content, as always! Curious about whether there are parts of your hands where you feel more pronounced pressure during the swing. Personally, I feel a lot of pressure on my left thumb (from my right hand on it) in my backswing, and then more pressure on my left pinky in the downswing. Exactly how I feel the (dynamic) pressure and the contact points with the handle seems to make a surprisingly significant difference in my swing.
Milo i love the way you teach and your swing mechanics i find it hard to replicate with a golf club but i find it easy with 'the golf pro' which Brendan has had in one of his vlogs, what are your thoughts on the product to replicate your swing? Thanks
It looks like a cool product, however I generally try to teach the swing with a club because that is what we play with. Sometimes aides can help but I tend to only use training aids that I can use with a club while hitting shots.
At 2.14 Milo demonstrates a “hinge” motion. I thought this type of hinge was not what he recommended in other videos! Have I misunderstood the position?
I was simply demonstrating that the connection between the two hands doesn’t disconnect. Don’t read too much into every little movement you see as I wave the club around
I grip it as tight as I can without letting my wrists or forearms get tight. My speed comes form my hand sand wrists and tight equals slow in my experience. I also wear no glove. When I played travel ball as a kid i heard people say they wouldn't play golf during the baseball season. I was the opposite if I was hitting the baseball well i was hitting the golf ball well.
Great video. Butch Harmon stated; 'Grip pressure should be a Minimum 5/10 and Maximum 7/10' which is great advice but very subjective don't you think? I mean, lifting 25kg to a woman or a small man might seem heavy but to a big strong man it may seem light, but it's the same weight.
I have arthritis in my hands. I have limited strength in them. I didn't realize how hard I needed to hold the club as I do now to get the desired shot. Hand and wrist strength has a lot to do with a good golf. As someone who does have arthritis I know I have to hold the club a lot harder than someone who is young and strong. To reiterate hand and wrist strength has a lot to do with a good shot. If your older give it an extra squeeze
Great stuff again! Really appreciate these myth busters and clarification on some of the gray areas that common sense seems to dictate! Will be signing up for your lessons once my setup comes in so that I can record myself for you guys to eval
I agree with all the content. However I think grip pressure is a bit of a dark art. And grip pressure varies from individual to individual. And I have been practicing with this in mind. My conclusion is, whatever the individuals grip pressure is, and it is up to the The most important thing is to maintain that grip pressure through out the swing. Over tightening at the top of the back swing going into transition result in all my bad shots, generally long left. Not maintaing constant pressure and relaxing the grip, result short right. You must maintain you desired grip pressure throughout. But what do I know. BUT............
I grip it just firm enough that it feels like its secure. Obviously throughout the swing the pressure is going to increase as it's put into motion and at impact it's going to increase even more but I never want to feel like at address I'm squeezing super hard
Hi Milo. I can't explain to my wife how to fix her swing. She both gets her elbow stuck behind her which in turn, causes her to early extend. I believe it's because she's ultra flexible and her back swing is way too far behind her. Do you have any tips to where the arms of the backswing should be?
I would suggest watching my videos on backswing and perhaps getting a smart ball which you can find on my website under training aids. milolinesgolf.com. Outside of that I would have to see her swing. Thanks for watching Byron!
Left arm straight. right elbow tucked in a bit and in line (not sticking out like a chicken wing), hands upward, club should be pointing towards where you are hitting. Tell her to try to 'feel like' she is doing the following: -At the top of the backswing, feel the hips start to fire before the hands come down. -When going into the swing, feel like she's pulling her hands straight down, not the club itself. If she fires her hands downward, the club will 'lag' behind the hands -End with weight on her front foot, and follow through, so that at impact the hands are in front of the ball. That's what's helped me anyway
@@lookaquarter thanks for the advice. I'm trying to get her to not have a pull down feeling since she's learn a more rotational swing. Trying to get her to understand that her turn can shallow the club out
@@oskunk2o Oh, I've never seen anyone advocate for getting rid of lag in a swing, could u link me where you heard that, Im curious what the benefits might be
@@lookaquarter maybe I'm not understanding you correctly. What I'm advocating for her to do is use the torque of her rotation to shallow the club, and not pull down to start the swing. You'll just end up steep. I know other swings such as Justin Rose's try to have that pull down behind them as they swing through, but I don't believe this is how Milo would teach it.
Dear Sir From Brazil for Milo Lines Golf. I am Brazilian, I live in Brazil and I have difficulties with the English language. Forgive the text. A very good presentation, great didactic and with simplicity. Congratulations. My profile is beginner and, worse, elderly. If possible, please, allow me to request some help, some simple information. Squeezing the club causes over curve for lack of better terms. You can’t even feel the ball come off the face. But you can’t be weirdly light with it either. Idk if it’s called club recoil or what but you feel it. You’ll feel the club face wrap around the ball but in a controlled way when you get it right
I feel like it’s throwing a knuckle ball in baseball. The way the ball comes off the face with squeezing the club makes it come out knuckly low snap hooks when you do hit it high it’s slice. You have to allow the face to gear effect to a certain degree. Too firm it won’t and it won’t bow correctly, especially if you already have a stiff shaft. You can get away with it a little more with a more flexible shaft
The last few clip's filmed slow mo from behind gives a great insight into correct plane, and that squat transition, bloody hell 195 7 iron that's my Sunday best with 7 wood 😂 Congratulations to Collin Morikawa on winning our open Sunday, man he can seriously play and his iron play was incredible
Your just young enough to not have arthritis in your knuckles! I swing as hard as I can and the ball never goes as far as I want. Generally overswinging causes the club to open up the hand on the grip.
@@MiloLinesGolf True enough I find myself having to remind the hands (they listen but forget) to keep grip in fingers. My real issue is distance which is woeful 180 yard drives, 8 iron 120 +, 3 wood 170 yards, 4 wood with stiff shaft goes 180 (it’s a hold over from my younger years). Shaping shots isn’t a problem (usually) distance is! Senior tees allow me to score in the upper 30’s on a regular basis. Memory wants me back to the regular tees maybe I’m dreaming but until I wake... Love your technique, Milo stay young and healthy tell Henry to smile more 😂

Gold again, the harnessing of inertia to provide the dynamics of the swing. So clear and so essential, kudos again to a natural teacher
Thanks Alexander!
The explanation of keeping the face square when you supinate right wrist in transition is spot on thank you

I think not enough grip pressure and fingers coming off the grip is one of the most overlooked mistakes in amateurs. Great job guys!
