Good video here, but you should give ball park prices on what these various
models cost ?? It's very important to the average user. Also I think there is
    an upgraded version of the OBD2 100, for 2021, and it's called OBD2 - 500,
and it has a larger LCD screen, and I believe it's 2.8 inches, which is great.
Just wondering if the OBD 2 -500 will do everything the OBD2 - 100 will do ?
I'm thinking of buying one, as they have very good reviews. Maybe you know
something about the OBD 2- 500 Model, as you seem very knowledgeable.

I have a 2003 Buick Park Avenue, the service engine light recently came on, and the volt like came on due to a defective alternator and stayed on even though the alternator was replace. I purchased a THINKOBD 500. To try and diagnose the problem, all it shows is unable to read vehicle and ask me to make sure it's OBD II compatible ? Which it is- I'm not sure what my next step should be? I'd like to turn of the service engine and volt light if possible.

I purchased the model 100 simply to check IM readiness. There are two screen which come up. One is since cleared and the other one is this cycle. This cycle has not changed in a year now, since I was last due for an emissions test. Which one tells me if I will pass the test?

      Yo Luis,
      That's an excellent question.
I'm kind of familiar with OBD Scan Tools. I've been using them ever since the red Snap-on Brick circa 1999. That was a terrible design. It took catriges for different vehicles, and the internsl 9 volt battery was always dead. Lol
Anyways, I'm going to go out on a limb and say no.
Usually in order to access the vehicle's odometer you need a dealer level manufacturer specific Scan Tool. These cost around $5K-$10K or more, and are usually only sold to new car dealerships.
Or I could be wrong, and a 14 year old kid has figured out how to "jail break" a car's PCM like an iPhone.
Just off the top of my head I've been able to get reliable odometer information from carfax.
That was expensive though $100 for 3 vehicle reports.

Hi Luis, if you want something that's manufacturer-specific (like what you're asking will be manufacturer-specific), then we recommend the ThinkDiag as it allows for manufacturer-specific tests.
If you provide me with your car make and model, then we can double check with ThinkCar too to make sure!

    • @PanzerPlatform

      Yo Moog,
      I'm a retired auto mechanic.
I've followed the deleopnent of OBD2 for the past 27 years. I've had the "displeasure" of diagnosing, and repairing OBD1 vehicles, (model year 1981-1995). Such a pain. Lol
Yes it's true car makers, and the California Air Resource Board are currently working on OBD3.
However, I'm willing to bet dollars, to donuts it will be at least two decades before it's implemented arcross the global fleet.
And when it does, it will most likely still use the same 16 pin DLC (Diagnostic Link Connector). Last time I checked, less than half the pins are needed to run the current OBD Canbus protocol. They made the DLC 16 pin for future development, and manufacturer specific functions.
So this means all previous OBD2 Scan Tools will still work on OBD3 vehicles, they just won't have access to the newly developed emission, and diagnostic strategies.
So what I'm trying to say, is any current OBD2 Scan Tool will work, and be useful for the next 20 years.
      -Chuck

    • @blackboxmycar
      @blackboxmycar  3 роки тому +1

Hi Moog, when you start off with OBD ports "removed soon" from cars, and then continue with cars "slowly" implemented with their own systems, aren't those statements contradictory?
As far as we have heard from our customers, they have had a lot of success using OBD scanners with their vehicles. Of course, some have more features than the other, and the challenge is often to figure out which one is right for them. Hope this helps!

      @@blackboxmycar
      Yo BBMC,
The three biggest reasons OBD1 was ditched in 1995 for OBD2 in 1996 are the following.
      1.) Industry Standardization.
OBD1 vehicles required a different scan tool for each manufacturer, or "brand".
Or a really expensive scan tool that took different cartridges for each brand, and sometimes there were multiple cartridges for each brand.
The most popular scan tool of the early era was the red Snap-On brick, it was around $5,000, and there different cartridges, and keys, (there were keys that fit in the DLC connector too, I'm telling you it was a nightmare dealing with) were sold separate and were around $100 each.
That means if you worked on all brands of cars you had to have a $5,000 scan tool, and $2,000 in cartridges.
OBD2 kind of solved this at made it much easier for the repair industry to only need one scan tool that worked on all brands of vehicles.
2.) With OBD2 DTC's (Diagnostic Trouble Codes) are stored in the vehicle's computer after the ignition is turned off.
With OBD1, as soon as you shut the car off with an illuminated check engine light, the DTC is lost.
      3.) Bi-Directional communication
OBD1 could only "pull" info from the computer.
OBD2 has the ability to perform self tests like commanding certain actuators to function to verify proper operation. Like commanding a digital EGR valve to open to to witness an engine stumble, to verify the EGR, and it's passageways are working.
What Moog is talking about is going back to OBD1 in the sense there will be no industry standardization, and each manufacturer will make their own communication protocol. This would be a step backwards.
