  • Trinity Research and Innovation, in partnership with the Ireland Canada University Foundation (ICUF) and Valentia Transatlantic Cable Foundation, are pleased to invite Zita Cobb, Founder and CEO of the Shorefast Foundation, to speak on the subject of:
    “What Art has to do with the Price of Fish: Community Economics”
    On Thursday, February 18th at 15.00 (GMT) / 11.30 (NST) / 10.00 (EST)
    Zita Cobb is an eighth-generation Fogo Islander, Founder and CEO of Shorefast, and Innkeeper of the Fogo Island Inn. A registered Canadian charity, Shorefast uses business-minded means to help secure economic and cultural resilience for Fogo Island, Newfoundland. Shorefast’s notable achievements to date comprise a holistic set of charitable initiatives, including the world-class artist-in-residence program Fogo Island Arts (fogoislandarts.ca), and three social businesses (including the world-renowned Fogo Island Inn: fogoislandinn.ca) whose operating surpluses are returned to Shorefast for reinvestment in further community development work. Zita has been a Member of the Order of Canada since 2016 and was a 2020 inductee to Canada’s Business Hall of Fame.
    Zita will be joined by social explorer and author Cormac Russell, Managing Director of Nurture Development.

    I loved Zita's answer "It's messy" to the question of how decisions are made and projects are governed. That's the truth for all truly community-governed initiatives and tells us a lot about why some folks, though given the choice will still opt for top-down patriarchal models.
