No wah pedal? No problem! The "no wah" strumming pattern

  • No wah pedal? No problem! Here's a fun pattern that uses Gypsy-style strumming technique to simulate the sound of a wah pedal. You start with a downstroke that strikes the top two or three strings, followed by an upstroke that only strikes the high E string - to get the wah "click". The third motion is a downstroke that taps your index finger nail on the lowest strings, approximately E or A, or some mix of the two. It's a bit of a tongue twister, and like many things in guitar picking, in order to learn this, you have to fool around with it at fast speeds first, to get a sense of what it feels like when it loops.

      Dime had a camera attached to the head for the video to “I’m Broken” (I think - something from “Far Beyond Driven”). You could see the strings warbling in slow-mo and it looks neat.

    0:28 what do call that really fast ghost note hitting thingamabob?

    • @troygrady
      @troygrady  Рік тому +36

      It's three fast alternate picked notes - UDU. The trick is they're on different strings. The U is on the top string, the DU is on the fourth string / D string. This only works if you use a "USX" picking, motion, where upstrokes go up in the air. This motion lets you get from one string to another really fast, even with a string skip in between, as long as you're playing an upstroke when you make the switch. Here's a quick primer on what USX motion is and why people use it ( troygrady.com/primer/picking-motion/escape-motion/usx-motion/ ).

      @@Str1ng5 this video isn't necessarily a form of teaching but Troy has a ton of OTHER videos out there that have in fact taught me a lot. Are you judging him based on a single 20 second video?

    • @troygrady
      @troygrady  Рік тому +8

      @@Str1ng5 Honestly, I think in this case, the presentation here actually is pretty close to optimal teaching for this particular technique: the written description, plus the speed ramp demonstration, plus the speed slider in the video to see what it looks like in slow motion. Any more than that might be overcomplicating this.

    If you use the skin of your thumb (the lateral side of your thumb that hold the pick) to kinda "limit/cut" the vibration of the string(s), it will also cause a semi-wah sound. It's the same idea behind doing a pinch harmonic, but pinching it for longer. Try it out and mess around on a funky groove.
