The 1998 WWF Royal Rumble took place in St. Louis and it featured the third PPV meeting between Shawn Michaels and The Undertaker. With the WWF title now on the line, HBK has to defend his championship against The Phenom in a casket match. Shawn Michaels has relied on support from Triple H and Chyna but it appears that The Undertaker has some back-up of his own tonight, his little brother Kane.
The 30 Man Royal Rumble is centered around Stone Cold Steve Austin this year. Austin is a marked man, he's been attacking Rumble participants on Raw in an effort to strike first, and this has resulted Stone Cold becoming a target. If Austin wins the rumble match, he'll go on to WrestleMania 14 to face the WWF Champion.
This review is part of the Wrestling Bios "Reliving The War" series.

Props to Luna for checking on the ref during the Royal Rumble match. That girl was an underrated gem. RIP.
I enjoyed her character alot. Face or heel i cheered for her
Everyone talks highly of her = not underrated
@@Bale4Bond as a wrestler she’s definitely underrated
RIP Luna.
The entire Vachon family were a big part of making new fans throughout the province, Country and U.S.A.
They may be underrated overall but, along with the Rougeaus, Dino Bravo and Carpentier, we here in Quebec, and Canada, recognize their importance in the history of wrestling!
Great vid, btw! You are getting better and better with every video!
Steve Blackman for the hof. ;)
Cheers from Canada
I've always wondered why Blackman was eliminated early on. Thank you for the deep dive. You're right, fighting Gigan to save the city was more important than winning the royal rumble. Priorities.
What ?
@@lexkanyima2195 Did you not watch the video?
@@lexkanyima2195 18:48 this is how I remember it happening. Steve Blackman and Ken Shamrock in this company at the same time was a gift.
@@TheBuddha337 yes
@@TheBuddha337 u got worked my good man
The Steve Blackman commentary was exceptional in this video.
Facts big facts I love it
I watched it 3x in tears 😭
I had to put down my beverage
The guy caught all 151 Pokémon during a Royal Rumble. Even did the Mew Glitch. Pure badass
I always loved Blackman so this was really special for me Haha brilliant
Luna was a sweetheart breaking character to check on the well being of the referee...
~RIP Luna Vachon~
Aw Luna. Yeah, she had her issues, but everyone says she had a heart of gold.
I remember when the Usos got inducted in the HoF they showed a picture of Luna with Bull Nakano and Yokozuna. Yokozuna was also supposed to be really nice outside of the ring, and not at all like his character.
The night “Stone Cold” and “The Rock” were cemented as the future of the late-90s.
You got that right taking a trip down memory lane
The night wwf started to truly become better than wcw
I totally agree. This was the beginning of Stone Cold and Rock taking over the attitude era.
Austin definitely, Rock was great but still got boo'd for a lot of 98. The Summerslam ladder match with Triple H really turned the crowds around for him.
mid 98 is when The Rock came up
Mick Foley coming out to 3 of his alter egos in this rumble match was definitely the biggest highlight of the night in my opinion
Amazin
Definitely one of my favorite parts.
So he had three attempts and still couldn't win it? That shows how hard it is to win the Royal Rumble
@@rossomac21 nah it just was booked dat way lol
@@shaggydee8845 still bro it’s hard to be booked to win. You know they have to write some of this stuff down and it’s extremely hard to lift a pen/pencil and move it around a piece of paper to make words. Plus what if a guy forgets who’s supposed to win during the match?!?! What if he grabs the guy booked to win, picks him up and throws him out? Uh oh spaghetti-Os. Tough stuff
I remember the RAW after the 1998 Royal Rumble when Mike Tyson appeared there was a fan that had a sign that said "Number 1 Rule in WWF: No Biting."
Luna being awesome and checking on someone when they're legit hurt. Yet another reason I miss her.
We all know that Shane was giving Tyson pointers from his years as a world class striker with the Mean Street Posse
Maybe Shane ribbed him and said Austin's name is Cold Stone ???
Also, they probably got high
🤣🤣🤣🤣
" Look at Sunny , she hasn't had a good workout like that since 20 minutes ago in the locker room " That made me chuckle🤣🤣🤣🤣
Max Mini isn't mini where it counts - Sunny confirmed.
@@jackcarraway4707 Sunny Maxed his Mini
She got a mini workout judging how she was helping max mini lol.
The same comment like literally was in my head I was about to put it down and then I saw what you wrote and started laughing my ass off like did anyone catch that hilarious ass commentary this dude is so freaking funny man he be saying the freaking most off the cuff s*** he be having the sickest Burns and like it's so nonchalant that sometimes I can't even hold back the tears
all HBK’s personal stuff aside, he was such a great wrestler. He really could make a match special with his bumping, physical expressions and selling, not to mention he is underrated as an offensive competitor. He was fantastic
The Rock was a champ here. A match with Shamrock then entering the Royal Rumble at #5 and being the last eliminated. The Great One earned that IC belt on this night.
The Rock was the MVP, even though Austin won
Lol...at the "Tyson killed Tupac" sign! Even with all the security i'd be terrified to carry that sign anywhere near Iron Mike!
Yh thats a wild one 😂
It is a proven fact he ate him
Indirectly he did. Had the fight lasted longer chances are Pac wouldn’t have run into Orlando Anderson and set off the chain of events that led to his death.
@@karlitosway7474 that's crazy never thought about it that way, what if the fight lasted longer
@@shady3legend maybe Pac would have stayed at his hotel
Watching this series from episode one, without the hindsight of living this era through, it is absolutely insane to think about the fact that we're only going to see one more Shawn Michaels match on Reliving the War. He has been so pivotal in this series so far, and is going to give so much more to wrestling in the future.
I definitely feel like HBK has been the MVP of this series so far.
...but only because Steve Mufuggin Blackman, didn't want the job. LMAO
Good
Yeah agreed. SM was everyone's best match that he faced in that era pretty much. Siiigh
After an absolute bastard of a weekend that's given my mental health a real test, I'm looking forward to kicking back and enjoying this video
You've got this. Don't forget, whatever you're going through is only temporary.
Gotta appreciate the battle.. it's when the battle isn't raging that we should be concerned.. that means we're standing right in a trap.
facts, same here
here have a chinlock, 😉it's not a Davey boy CL but i hope it helps
Don't give up my brother.
The rise of the Austin Era and the exit of HBK were set in motion, so I really enjoyed the '98 Royal Rumble
You enjoyed the fact that HBK got injured and had to retire?
@@cax1175 lemme tell you something, I knew HBK was going on a self-destructive path in his day so no, I didn't say I was happy HBK retired. His time was coming
Starting with the curtain call a lot of events happened in just the right way that set up the wwf to be the winner I'm the war
@@cax1175 The way Michaels was going, if the injury didn't get him out of wrestling his habits would.
@@brandonperkins176 Generally HBK wasn't the kind of man, who would carry WWE as their face through the Monday Night Wars. In comparison to Steve Austin, he had nothing to offer, what could be gamechanging. Austin learned through tough times (I mean journey that began with his dismissal from the WCW, which helped reinvent himself) what audience needed at that time and he started delivering it, slowly coming to the top (and obviously it doesn't mean that was the only factor of the win in the battle with WCW).
Steve Blackman is a true hero. Ever wonder how Jet Jaguar was able to help Godzilla fight Megalon and Gigan? It's because he was piloted by Steve Mufuggin Blackman!
I accept this version of Steve Blackman as canon and now this is what actually happened. He requested to be eliminated so he could go save San Jose
I was at this PPV. 5th row with my uncle (RIP) and older brother. One the single greatest memories of my entire childhood and life… especially when the lights went out and Kane’s pyro went off.
Do you keep with today's wrestling🤔
More than ever! :)
Awesome!! That's great
Steve Blackman: Exists.
Wrestling Bios: "So anyway, I started hyping..."
Anyway what ever happened to Steve Blackman.
The crowd reactions Austin received for his rumble entrance and when he won it were incredible. Nothing was stopping Austin that year, and as he got more popular, so did the WWF. PPV buys live attendance and house show attendance and merch sales all shot up, and it was amazing to watch.
Exactly...."Stone Cold" was white hot!! 🔥Blazing White Hot!!🔥 A very fun & interesting time in wrestling!! 🤘🏼
This is a big bang for the WWF
It would of been good to see Bret Hart vs stone cold at WM14 . Had Bret Hart not left in 1997. It would of been good to see him and stone cold go at it one more time. The original story line was stone cold Bret Hart WM14.
@@nateroy9412 maybe by a swerve victory.
@@lexkanyima2195 Shawn Michele's knows he was not originally supposed to be in the main event at WM14. Bret Hart stone cold has a great I quit match at WM13. So for the championship would have been a good ending for Bret Hart in 1998 in WWE of course WWF at the time.
I love how you casually showed the “Tyson killed Tupac” sign while talking about Mike being in the arena.
This is seriously the best wrestling series on youtube. Keep it up.
The blackman jokes are so funny xD

HBK might have saved his life here, considering how he turned his life around after his four years away.
well he didn't change for another 4 years, i also wonder with all this talk about it if he was any worse than the rest of them. geez look how many died.
"Chris, what are they doing to you, man? Are you Doink now?"
"It's just for tonight."
"Aww man! I can't believe they made you Doink."
Possible I honestly prefer his body of work in the second half of his career anyway. Somehow being away made him better. Idk if it was making up for lost time or because they added more guys who could go but I loved his second half. The first half in wwe I only liked the iron man match with bret personally
U know I totally agree
@@chrisortiz8072 Bret mark
I was at this one! A good 20-something rows back, behind and to-the-right of the entranceway. With the casket-on-fire bit, the flames were SO HOT that I had to shield my face from 20ish rows back! 🥵
Blood runs cold in the veins of Steve Mufuggin Blackman. I wonder who else stands a chance to win the RR.
For all of us that was born before 1992 this was a great time to be a wrestling fan. I feel for those who did not live in this era. 98 was a smash mouth of a year. Great wrestling, WCW revenge came out that year. Music was great, gas still cost $1 per gallon, half baked was a great stoner movie. I could go on and on again but I will get a cramp from typing.
Some...body once told me...
Only shooting stars break the mooold
Those that didn't experience this era, have no idea what wrestling is.
Gas was UNDER $1 for most of 1998.
How could you forget Michael Jordan 3 peating again ? Lol… but yes 98 was an amazing time in life
Let's go..... Peak WWF is on the horizon
This just confirmed my theory that Steve "Mufuggin" Blackman is the Anti -Glacier.

Everybody at the time was playing second fiddle to Stone Cold. Even DX and Undertaker. But the Rock doing double duty you could tell he was going to be something huge.
Rechecked UA-cam all day for this moment!!!
"She hasn't had a good work out like this since 20 minutes ago in the locker room." Lol! Damn!
She’s only helping to ease the boys’ anxieties before they go on camera.
Well the thing Shane has in common with Tyson is that they both have great punches!
Shamrock recently said the rock was his favorite opponent
God I loved that finish with The Rock and Ken Shamrock. The sort of using a weapon and thinking ahead to plant it on the opponent just in case? That's a sort of thing you just didn't see back then, or still really. Usually any sort of "Guy gets DQ'd for something he didn't do" was a case of him disarming an opponent and getting caught holding the chair or something.
I just thought it was really neat and clever myself. Puts the Rock over as not just a heel, but a cunning heel at that.
it was also the first time in history that a referee reversed his decision because a wrestler told him that he was hit with a foreign object and the referee actually went searching for said foreign object. personally i'm not a fan because everybody knows these things are only done to benefit the heels, never does a referee actually catch a heel cheating so it's a very predictable trope in my opinion
Completely agree. Always been a big pet peeve of mine how inconsistently decision reversals we're applied. Just a year earlier it was said it was impossible to reverse the Rumble decision.
Yeah I loved Shamrocks shocked reaction when he reached for the knucks. He was such an underrated performer. Great move set and really looked the part too
That was a swerve

Gotta fill the Alex-Wright-sized hole in his heart given that Alex was featured less in this time.
Can’t wait to see his reactions to Berlyn or whatever they repackaged Alex to.
@@LadyAstarionAncunin It's going to be over a year before he gets to that on the Monday Night Wars.
This is an instance of a match being predictable being a good thing. Everyone knew Austin was going to win, but no one had a problem with it because everyone wanted him to win anyway.
Tom Brandi's elimination was great 😁
The Casket match is so much fun to watch. Great match.
But looking back Austin would be THE guy
I need that Steve Blackman/ Cold As Ice mash up 😅
Great video!! I remember watching this live with my father who passed a year ago. Reminds me of him when watching your videos. I anticipate your videos more than any others!!
I remember I was able to watch this event for FREE on pay per view and to this day I still can't believe I was able to watch it for free
I see you were also a member of the hotbox group. My uncle made a killing selling those so I enjoyed the hell out of watching free WCW & WWF (as well as a few ECW) PPVs from the late 90's up to 2002 when cable went digital and put the brakes on the hotbox market. Those were the days.

So glad you pointed out that Tyson kept talking about Cold Stone. I guess he was interested in some ice cream that night.
You are very much appreciated Wrestling Bios!
I didn't have Sky so the only wrestling I watched when I was a kid was WCW when it was on ITV, I saw occasional episodes of WWF when I was a kid at friends but preferred WCW. I hadn't watched any wrestling for about 4 years and then randomly watched this PPV at a mates when I was at Uni. Couldn't believe the change in WWF compared with the cartoony product from the 80's and early 90's. Plus seeing several of my old WCW favourites like Austin, Cactus Jack and Vader sold me on WWF and I was a fan from then on.
I be listening to reliving the war podcast at work and I’m almost caught up 😭 lol
Love these videos. 98 was my favorite year of wwf tbh. So damn epic entire year
Your entertaining commentary has made your videos one of few things I still get excited for on here. It feels like you've gotten more and more comfortable as these have gone on, and aren't afraid to be more fun.
I was at this live! My first ever live PPV. My lasting memories from the event were just how insanely over Stone Cold was, my younger cousin bringing a sign that said "no ears Mike Tyson" (we were in the total nose bleeds so he never even lifted it up), and these two little blonde girls even younger than I was at the time (I was 11) standing around cursing like sailors at Kane after the show was over. Simpler times
I was there too! My friends and I sat a few rows down from Tyson's VIP box. Quite possibly my favorite wrestling event ever.
@mania land I remember the casket part but not the kid getting tackled. I also remember Tyson getting a ton of heat from fans when leaving the arena.
@mania land Heat like booing him and taunting him about the ear thing. When we saw him leaving in the hallway outside the VIP box, two teenagers, one white and one black, offered up theirs ears and asked if he preferred white meat or dark meat. Tyson didn't seem too pleased.

Another awesome upload from the wrestling channel with the most jam on the planet!
This was an awesome event and it was, in a lot of ways, the official start of the Attitude Era. Austin was being booked as being unstoppable, on his way to WM and the beginning of the Austin era and the last big name of the previous era, HBK becoming injured at this event. Which led to him leaving WWF after WM. Royal Rumble 98 did feel like an Attitude era PPV and within a few months the attitude era would be in full swing.
If we compare the booking to this event to the booking of WCWs latest PPV, Starrcade 97. It really shows WWF were on a different level booking wise compared to WCW.
There was a hilarious comment JR Made during the rumble match were he said quote “Mark Henry, is handling the big Johnson!” (Ahmed Johnson) 😂
I’ve been waiting almost 2 years for this video. My brother and I were at this event. Great memories. Great content. Huge fan of what you do!

I also was very disappointed on how they handled Owen Hart man the fed really dropped the ball.😪
@SpiteHook he could've been the ic champion for an extended run once Rock graduated to the main event.
@SpiteHook Owen should be pushed by this point.
It’s not shocking that he didn’t get a push considering how petty Vince is.
