    VIDEO DESCRIPTION
    How to draw things in perspective or how to draw things foreshortened: This drawing tutorial provides drawing tips and a basic introduction to understanding foreshortening, an important aspect of linear perspective. We will discuss how to foreshorten something whether creating a linear perspective drawing or not.
    It doesn't matter if you're making a one point ( 1-point,1 point, one-point ) perspective, two point ( 2 point, 2-point, two-point ) perspective, and three point ( 3 point, 3-point, three-point ) perspective drawing, the same rules apply
    .
    This can help set the foundation for drawing a house, room, building, person, superhero, body part, etc. in perspective

    I just want to say THANK YOU SO MUCH. Perspective was only ever intuitive to me for boxes and nothing more, so thanks for explaining everything in terms of boxes! As a person who is better with math than with art, geometric explanation of more complicated perspective is just what I needed.

    I only recently became interested in artwork and this is definitely helping allot, my art teachers never really directly "taught" me anything, it was the same with graphic design when we were supposed to be learning about these kinds of concepts, kind of interesting that a video less than half an hour long has taught me more on artwork than 2 high school classes. Thanks very much for putting this up i've subscribed and will be looking at other videos if I need any more help :)

      ***** If i could ask you question, something i've been wondering. Lets say we are foreshortening an arm, the law of perspective tells us that anything closer to us will appear bigger, and thigns that are further away will get smaller. Though, on an arm things get a little tricky. For example, the wrist as it's natrual form is smaller than the end of the forearm. So i have trouble with thinking of the rule that everything that's closer to us is bigger and everything that goes fruther back in space gets smaller. I'll look at an arm in perspective and feel like that rule is being broken, or i've missed a part of the rule.

    • @alphonsodunn
      @alphonsodunn  10 років тому

      You have to think of the overall shape not the smaller details...it gets tricky but the best way to learn to draw these things from memory is to draw from life

  • @mattrn58

    This was REALLY USEFUL! I loved the way you used that square with an x in it to figure out the proportions of a face from above and below. Sometime would you use that technique for determining the proportions of a face drawn in three quarter view? I usually just eyeball it, but I'm never confident that I have it right, especially if there's a upward or downward angle involved in addition to the three quarter angle. That could be a video all on it's own. Thanks!

    your tutorials are awesome and i so appreciate them. plants, trees etc have become the primary objects in my work. i can very well draw as "i see" but the 'energy' gets lost. ie a philodendron plant which is one of my faves & my goal is getting that energy/life of the leaves translated onto the paper, and not the academic informational pov. rather than keep muddling along trying figure it out, where do i go? my alphonso dunn bookmark on youtube! you are an amazing instructor, please keep them coming! btw liz benson's remark is spot on. . .

    Not to sound nit-picky, but by drawing a cube in perspective, if you show one face as a perfect square (like you are), you are no longer seeing it in perspective. You would have to be looking at the cube dead on in order to see a face as a perfect square, thus no longer seeing perspective. The face that is a perfect square needs to also be tapering off towards the horizon line.

    • @alphonsodunn
      @alphonsodunn  10 років тому

      Cody Behrens When drawing the head that tapering is generally very negligible

    Hello again...before i start...can i please again thank you...i know...it must bore u by now...but u supersede my expectations by always finding time to respond promptly... I am just amazed. Thank you. okay....So the buildings that i was talking about are mostly from the architecture of ancient India where most of the structures have Mughal influence like TAJ MAHAL. Or those of Rome...which have too many cylinders....! To be a little more specific...i have difficulty in drawing mostly a dome...in perspective. I understand conceptually that all things can be placed in a box or cylinder but when i practice it....i go haywire in foreshortening or looking at a building while standing just under it (standing under a dome) ..also when it comes to circular forms placed on such cylinders and boxes, (viewing from a distance) my perspective goes for a toss. I can draw but something doesnot feel right. I would really appreciate..u doing a explanatory video where u can take any monument in which u can accomodate boxes cylinders and domes...and basically dissect it...i dont know if that makes sense. But even if its just a pillar...if u can show how each element is placed on the other. I know u would say i should ask some architect....i read it in books...but i read abt foreshortening in books too..but the way i got it when u explained...it was like I GOT IT! U know what i mean. Please do a video on palace or any monument u feel comfortable doing. Thank u so much.

    • @alphonsodunn
      @alphonsodunn  9 років тому

      Anuja Choksi Hmm, I think I understand what you mean. Hmm, I think it comes down to what is the viewer's (your) standpoint or POV to the building. If you can inbox me send me a few images of your attempts as well as a reference image you saw of what you would like to capture. Preferably, the actual building, or one you saw you'd like to emulate
