That was his father at the end He was dying...but luckily they found someone to give him a transplant... Possibly the most emotional song I have ever heard.😭😭😭
"I'm not your son, Your not my father" He is throwing away all of the bad blood that happens between parents and children (growing into adulthood). He is placing them on even footing with no need to ask forgiveness or holding malice. This song was so hard on me because the last time I saw my father alive, I was leaving the house and he was crying like a child begging me to stay. I was in the Army and had to return to my unit. He passed away three weeks later.
James father was terminally ill here, it is his father at the end of the video, he only had one kidney as he'd been a live donor to save someone else's life, his one kidney was failing and he needed a new kidney, James and his siblings weren't a match, his father was on the donor waiting list, but really there was no hope. James wrote this for his father, after the video was released a distant cousin was tested and a match, he donated a kidney and James's father is still alive. There was no acting in this video, everything is real. A wonderful happy ending 🤗...
The reason he doesn't say Daddy at first is because we're so reserved as a country, it seems to be shame or embarrassment, we're so weird when it comes to empathy and such. But we do feel it. That's why this song is epic. Don't think I've seen anything similar in the music industry...
totally agree with your comment. Growing up in the UK and now spending 8 years in Thailand has really opened my eyes. There is no embarrassment here when talking about parents. The UK might be forward thinking but needs to retain older traditions.
I think in the line "you're not my father, I'm not your son" he's talking about roles being reversed as he sits at his death bed. I've never heard that song, it choked me up...great job ladies.
Monsters James Blunt Oh, before they turn off all the lights I won't read you your wrongs or your rights The time has gone I'll tell you goodnight, close the door Tell you I love you once more The time has gone So here it is I'm not your son You're not my father We're just two grown men saying goodbye No need to forgive No need to forget I know your mistakes And you know mine And while you're sleeping I'll try to make you proud So daddy, won't you just close your eyes? Don't be afraid It's my turn To chase the monsters away Oh, well I'll read a story to you Only difference is This one is true The time has gone I folded your clothes on the chair I hope you sleep well Don't be scared The time has gone So here it is I'm not your son You're not my father We're just two grown men saying goodbye No need to forgive No need to forget I know your mistakes And you know mine And while you're sleeping I'll try to make you proud So daddy, won't you just close your eyes? Don't be afraid It's my turn To chase the monsters away Sleep a lifetime Yes and breathe a last word You can feel my hand On your own I will be the last one So I'll leave a light on Let there be no darkness In your heart But I'm not your son You're not my father We're just two grown men saying goodbye No need to forgive No need to forget I know your mistakes And you know mine And while you're sleeping I'll try to make you proud So daddy, won't you just close your eyes? Don't be afraid It's my turn To chase the monsters away Songwriters: Jimmy Hogarth, James Blunt, Amy Victoria Wadge
first time i'm hearing this. brought tears to my eyes. i wrote a song about my dad, but i don't know if i can ever perform it in public. i would get too emotional. lost my dad more than 10 years ago & it still affects me.
I understand the feeling mick. When I lost my mum I could not talk about her or look at her photo for 5years. You just have to picture them as being in a better place😀trust me. It will give you peace of mind and assurance that they are not dead but alive ,it’s just that we cannot see them.
@@busolaj3 everyone goes thru mourning the death of a loved one differently. for u it was not looking at ur mother's photo for 5 years. for me, i would want to look & relive those moments that r captured in those photos. the group BREAD has a song called everything i own. the phrase, "nobody else could ever know, the part of me that can't let go", i can really relate to. when i was alone with my dad, i would say something, then leave but then come back, 3 times. i couldn't let go.
The "I'm not your son, you're not my father,we're just two grown men saying goodbye" came from James' and his fathers' time in the British Army. It was their way of saying "Goodbye, good luck,I love you" when James was sent on deployment.

I love the fact that James told the producer no retakes because he was crying.
There were 5 takes of the video. He said in an interview
Super super James

that's fantastic that he was saved! thanks for letting us know.
You only need one kidney that works. I am an expert. I have zero kidneys. Been in dialysis the past 7 years.
I just watched James discussing this, it wasnt a distant relative, he was on the donor list and a match was found
Did you miss anyones reaction? Lol

Monsters
James Blunt
Oh, before they turn off all the lights
I won't read you your wrongs or your rights
The time has gone
I'll tell you goodnight, close the door
Tell you I love you once more
The time has gone
So here it is
I'm not your son
You're not my father
We're just two grown men saying goodbye
No need to forgive
No need to forget
I know your mistakes
And you know mine
And while you're sleeping
I'll try to make you proud
So daddy, won't you just close your eyes?
Don't be afraid
It's my turn
To chase the monsters away
Oh, well I'll read a story to you
Only difference is
This one is true
The time has gone
I folded your clothes on the chair
I hope you sleep well
Don't be scared
The time has gone
So here it is
I'm not your son
You're not my father
We're just two grown men saying goodbye
No need to forgive
No need to forget
I know your mistakes
And you know mine
And while you're sleeping
I'll try to make you proud
So daddy, won't you just close your eyes?
Don't be afraid
It's my turn
To chase the monsters away
Sleep a lifetime
Yes and breathe a last word
You can feel my hand
On your own
I will be the last one
So I'll leave a light on
Let there be no darkness
In your heart
But I'm not your son
You're not my father
We're just two grown men saying goodbye
No need to forgive
No need to forget
I know your mistakes
And you know mine
And while you're sleeping
I'll try to make you proud
So daddy, won't you just close your eyes?
Don't be afraid
It's my turn
To chase the monsters away

They were both military officers. And they are facing death like grown men
