The fact that Cowell "guessed" he was a singer was bullcrap as he'd have been very aware of Klaffords success by this point. It's a mostly rare occasion when a covering artist does a song in such a way that the audience at large would call it "better than the original"...This was/is such a case. When I heard this rendition the first time, I went through a very bad patch in my life. I'm not out of the woods yet, but this moves me tears every time. My wife has been instructed that this song will be played at my funeral...THIS cover!

It`s actually not that rare. And it is on full display on youtube. It`s always easier to improve on something existing than to create something new. That`s especially true for writing of all kinds (music, lyrics, books, poems). And not all writers were good singers. They did the foundation and better singers build on it. Happens all the time. The only reason this might be somewhat perceived as rare is that most people prefer the version they are used to.
I don’t see how you could improve on this version. It’s subtle where it needs to be and powerful in a way the original lacked. Love the original too but I do prefer the heaviness to this version.

It's a mostly rare occasion when a covering artist does a song in such a way that the audience at large would call it "better than the original"...This was/is such a case. When I heard this rendition the first time, I went through a very bad patch in my life. I'm not out of the woods yet, but this moves me tears every time. My wife has been instructed that this song will be played at my funeral...THIS cover!

It`s actually not that rare. And it is on full display on youtube. It`s always easier to improve on something existing than to create something new. That`s especially true for writing of all kinds (music, lyrics, books, poems). And not all writers were good singers. They did the foundation and better singers build on it. Happens all the time.
The only reason this might be somewhat perceived as rare is that most people prefer the version they are used to.
