Alvin Bratz maybe that was a state or individual school thing. I’m from Ohio I loved learning about the Civil War and slavery in school and we never learned about Robert Small. We didn’t even learn that much about the civil war much, one of my former classmates posted on Facebook (well into adulthood) that she didn’t know that the Confederate flag was associated with the Civil War not just about slavery but straight up didn’t know the Confederate flag was about the confederacy. Freaking weird.

I absolutely agree with the last line, "I love him."

this story makes it sound like he stumbled into this idea, rather than planned it.

@Fjord Vilkensen Don't be stupid. Are you here to prove to the world that Scandinavians are just a bunch of miserable tight-asses with no sense of humor? This is Comedy Central as you've mentioned. We don't come here for history lessons, we come here to be entertained by drunk people trying to recite the past. Most people or at least a lot of people find that funny, because it is. Lighten the fuck up!

This is a great story in comic form but Robert Smalls lived an incredible life for real. He’s a hero. Who knew Comedy Central would teach better history than public or private schools?

Robert Smalls is a man I look to for guidance when coming up with on the spot half-baked escape plans b/c his worked mostly. Also the ship he stole was a munitions ship that had just been restocked and Smalls had knowledge of underwater mine locations in confederate waters.
