Here's some more about the man: during his time as Congressman for South Carolina, he *authored* state legislation providing for South Carolina to have the *first free and compulsory public school system in the United States.* This guy has a place in history textbooks!
We need to teach kids about this guy in school, because every black history month in elementary we only ever talked about mlk jr., there are so many great heroes who are ignored
Rosendo mendoza This is nothing, this entire country could and would not exist without black people. Yet there’s nothing in the history books taught in school.
All in all black history is very exstentsive and you always find yourself learning something new. I only know the general people that are always talked about during black history month. Freaking weird.
I learned about Robert Smalls in one of my university history classes; this guy was amazing, and I agree with some of the comments that there should be a movie based off of him--not just commandeering the Confederate ship but also his rise from former slave to Congressman and the impact he had there. I absolutely agree with the last line, "I love him."
this story makes it sound like he stumbled into this idea, rather than planned it. Smalls hatched this plan in advance. He even had the forethought to to arrange the families of the crew to meet them at another port. So it wasn't just luck and chance.
