In aviation, there are very specific reasons why controls are where they are and shaped the way they are - you can tell by touch what you're working. Most older model vehicles have similar controls and placements - you can literally hop in nearly any vehicle and drive away. But rather than having intuitively placed manual back-ups Tesla opted for, well, whatever they thought worked...and people are dying. So, standardization needs to return. Immediately.
Sorry but capitalism says no. instead Here's a brand new charger port shape ONLY for one product and what's approved by the company, you will own nothing and be happy, no more Universal anything 😂
First video I found that showed how the back door manual release worked. As you've highlighted it's absurdly complex, especially in an emergency situation. I think the best advice would be to use a window breaker if you are stuck in the back seat.
you can't, new tesla and many other manfacture started to add laminated glass instead of tempered glass in front seat window, some times backseat as well.
last week a mother and her daughter were burned to death when their tesla crashed into a tree and the batteries caught fire. it was a minor impact. i guess they didn't know how to use the emergency door release. it just seems irresponsible of the manufacturer. the father found them at the scene and the firemen wouldn't let him near the car.
I recently came across a reddit comment that posted a link to this tragic accident. Watching this video blows my mind. Form over function and safety. That process to open the back door should disqualify anyone from ever saying Tesla's are designed with safety in mind. Bullshit.
Dumbest Design Ever for rear door release. . Why don’t make similar to popular door unlock. I am not anti-new design but in emergency in panic it doesn’t come natural. If you can’t do that than just make rear manual release same as front . Also Just Fkng print Letters “Emergency Release with symbol” simple solution.. There is high chance someone dying in tesla and will get sued.
Thank Chris for the video. I couldn't figure out where the manual release was for the rear seats. Now I know I'll have to scramble to the front to exit the car. LOL.
We just experienced the same thing, the car died and locked itself in the driveway. The car had to be towed to tesla only for them to say they could not duplicate the issue. I have 3 little ones who ride in the back seat. They would not be able to get out of the car in an emergency. This is crazy, thanks for the video
I’m thinking about getting a model y. If I did, I would immediately modify it to make it accessible, but I shouldn’t have to. I have a grown disabled son who doesn’t have the motor skills to open that door sitting next to a lake, let alone on the bottom of it. I don’t know if anybody could get that door open quickly enough to escape flood or fire or a train. My first thought is to put a Hole in the little plastic cover and the rubber mat to pull the string through and let it dangle in the cubby hole. It’ll look like crap but should work. But, like I said, I shouldn’t have to. Cmon Tesla, this is a Safety issue. This and the phantom braking are two big reasons I’ve waited.
Yeah but if you are injured in the back seat due to an accident, or there’s someone with reduced mobility at the back how do you expect him/her to squeeze between the front seats to get out? My brother met with an accident in his Tesla with his 80y old mother in law in the back seat. The car battery shut off as a safety measure but his MIL with arthritis had to maneuver her way out the front. Don’t you think Tesla should have a safety manual override to open the rear doors too?
Ideally this seems workable but in reality this setup can be catastrophic. Many reasons why but the most common problems can be: 1) If the fire starts from the front then the option to access the escape door release will likely be unthinkable 2) If there's a fire then the visibility and the breathability will become poor within 30 secs to a minute. PPl will panic automatically and quickly. Tesla developers must recall asap and replace with a system that will work. I'm speaking as an owner of a model y.
Can people outside the car open the doors when the power was cut off? Imagine someone unconscious in the car during accident or fire and the power was off.
My family was hit at a stop in their model Y. My kids in the back could not get out because the power in the tesla completely shut off. They had to wait for strangers to pull them out through the window because my wife’s seat belt wouldn’t unlatch in the front driver seat. If there was a fire, it could have killed them.
All the Tesla owners who are sitting in the back of their car as opposed to, say, an Uber customer who’ll basically burn because it’s impossible to open their door in an emergency?
Now imagine if you’re incapacitated in the front seat and your car loses power from the accident. They can’t get in to help you by just opening the door We found this out yesterday when my wife and kids were in an accident in the Y. Strangers could not open the door to get the kids out and they had to crawl out the window
As often as Teslas go up in flames, the rear doors should have emergency exit latches too. Thankfully, I don't HAVE to worry about my ICEV spontaneously combusting!
In the United States, EVs caught fire at a rate of 25 per 100,000 sold compared with 1,529 per 100,000 gas cars sold, according to a 2022 study of data from the National Transportation Safety Board done by the insurance website Auto Insurance EZ.Jul 16, 2024
My friend got a testa for his birthday king story short doors wouldn’t open cause car died he had no way of getting out so I had to bust open the window and told insurance it got broken into he used insurance money to repair and buy a Honda and saved 25k
I canot understand these cars are now being used by uber drivers and the rear passenger has no emergency exit it must be totally illegal to use as a taxi

I was stuck in my Tesla and thank God there was a slight Crack in my window. I called AAA who was 90 minutes away. I started to panick as I was overheating. F**k Elon for making such a stupid design!
why change an system efficient and simple (mechanic lock) since many year ? Stupid innovation, electric way on safety fonctions, with bullet proof windows, a real trap in some situation (fire, water)

Saving lives is always the best advice
Excellent video
Haha thank you
i did not know. ty chris.
Thanks for the important info! I didn’t even know the front doors had a latch!
Good tip thanks Chris! I only knew about the buttons for the front doors.
No problem!
Disqualifying not to have a physical latch accessible in the back.
I had to come watch this bc I have too many friends and coworkers with Teslas. Thank you for saving lives!
Friends don't let friends drive Teslas.

Release levers need a different color or most drivers will never know. A woman in TX recently drowned in a pond due to this.
For this reason it should fail safety pass.

bad setup for rear doors

They do. It just takes 60 seconds to open the rear doors manually.
It like a whole ass checklist you have to go through
It looks we need to keep a small flat head screw driver in car for ‘emergency’.
I agree or keep it open
Thank you. That's good information.
A Tesla just got in crash in Korea.
Fires was put out in 1 hour…
The driver was found in the back seat
I appreciate all your videos! been watching alot since I just got my tesla! thank you for all the tips!
Yay you’re welcome ☺️
after billionaire angela chao incident in texas, all tesla owners need to watch this video
You know they won't. Too many are the "It'll never happen to me" kinda thinkers. Hell, that's really everyone, TBPH.
@@NorthForkFisherman it just worth the time
I love All of Your #Tesla videos.
... And in any other car, simply open the door.
The front manual release requires the window to go down, correct? What if the window won't go down, can you still force your way out?
Yes the latch opens no matter what so you’re good
No manual release in my 2022 model 3 for the rear seats, either have to craw out the front or lower the seat to escape out the trunk.
Or accept defeat from the Tesla gods
Ideally this seems workable but in reality this setup can be catastrophic. Many reasons why but the most common problems can be:

Might have to break the window.
How would anyone get into a car if the driver is unconscious and the door is locked?
Same as any modern car - break the window.
Yes, it's a bad idea to drive with the doors locked.@@rich531
No they cannot. My wife was in an accident in her model Y yesterday. She couldn’t get back in the car to get the USB drive in the glove compartment.
I'm just gonna have to burn to death. No way I'm risking messing up my window trim because of a little fire. 🤨
Amen
I don't want to be in the back seat in case of driving into water 😅
Or the front seat either.
My family was hit at a stop in their model Y. My kids in the back could not get out because the power in the tesla completely shut off. They had to wait for strangers to pull them out through the window because my wife’s seat belt wouldn’t unlatch in the front driver seat.
If there was a fire, it could have killed them.
They should just have regular mechanical doors what's wrong with a mechanical door?

Waiting for the first one to burn to death because emergency/rescue personell cant open those clown doors from the outside...
You have got to be kidding me 🤨, does the owners manual come to mind ?
A friend’s Tesla just drove into a pond. She couldn’t get out and died. TESLA’S ARE THE MOST DANGEROUS CARS ON THE ROAD TODAY.
You're friends with billionaire Angela Chao?
Edit: I didn't realise this was five days ago, nvm.
@@TheSpiralProgression she died in february, the news just revitalized because more information came out.

I gotta simple solution! Don't buy a Tesla!
Wind down the windows a little bit before you try it out.

non existent in new model 3. it's solid plastic
The rear release is practically useless in emergency. You won't be able to get out within 5 seconds.
Question is why they hide the button behind the wall 😂
I would get a model y
How is this safe??? Looks like reinventing the wheel here…This is my biggest fear w buying a Tesla…
My friend got a testa for his birthday king story short doors wouldn’t open cause car died he had no way of getting out so I had to bust open the window and told insurance it got broken into he used insurance money to repair and buy a Honda and saved 25k
so you have a friend who committed insurance fraud? cool dude

Trying to open that 2cm lid with tools during emergency ? That is a joke
anyone else here after Moscow Mitch's sister in low drowned in a Tesla.
Here too.
WTF???? KIDS IN THE BACK ARE SCREWED

There are different years and model of Teslas so why do you act like this is for all Teslas?
these cars are death traps
