The ability to also groom at zero cost of the owner means a lot of customers are probably pretty nice since it's a free groom, making Vanessa's job easier with one more element of stress removed. That would be something kind of big to be jealous over. Being able to pay bills because of donations, people buying products or people watching the videos instead of living by how many appointments you can complete, where you can have days where you maybe only groom one animal. Not gonna lie, yeah, that would make me a tinge bitter (I'm not a groomer, though 😅. Just trying to put myself in the shoes of one).
Not everyone is good in front of a camera, and maybe the audience won't come even if you are, because there's also a healthy dose of luck. The videos at least could act as another revenue stream to help on bills, but again, sometimes that doesn't happen even for those who try.

Same. I find myself laughing out loud at her hysterical comments about the dogs she lovingly grooms and I can see the care and patience she brings to every animal. She’s more than knowledgeable and if I lived in Canada, close by , I wouldn’t hesitate to employ her. I think she does a great job and commend her for doing some of the most challenging grooms that come in. Being on social media, you will find critics all the time. Most of these comments are the opposite of what Vanessa does. First of all, she takes on animals most would avoid. Second, she's patient and a bit of an animal whisperer and gets these fearful pets to relax long enough to get the care they need. Vanessa has also taken chances with animals that are aggressive because she's clearly got the animal's best interest at heart. You don't spend 3-4 hours grooming a dog without caring. She's also not grooming these dogs for best in show but for their health, comfort and hygiene.

I actually started doing that to my mothers dogs because it makes me laugh and help me relax so they can relax when I get spooked or irritated because they won't listen to me ( I mean why should they if I come over every once in a blue moon). The dogs don't care and I feel better, my voice remains calm and everybody remains chill. I think my mother started doing it too and she really adores her blonde spoilt floofballs. The "shaming owners" thing is just stupid and Vanessa is spot on. I've seen this on adoption videos too, don't shame the owner, or they won't have the confidence to actually bring the animal in and surrender them. Then the animals stay with someone who is neglecting them, or they get released into nature where they cannot survive properly. And there is no real upside to shaming, all it does it make US, the outside observer, feel better, it doesn't help the animal, it doesn't help the owner be a better owner. Shaming someone instead of helping the person (human or animal) that needs help is just selfish.

    • @BewareTheLilyOfTheValley
      @BewareTheLilyOfTheValley 6 місяців тому +1

This. I one time saw a video where most of the dogs at the shelter were adopted but on adoption day for one of the dogs, the person changed their mind. The person in the video nastily said, "Fine, they didn't deserve (name of dog) anyways."
And yet, do shelters not work their damndest to pull on heart strings to get people through the door? Weaponizing pity is their biggest way of drawing attention. Some shelters will make more of an effort to emphasize still needing to think it over before going in for adoption, but many are overcrowded and don't ask questions. I applaud the person that realized that maybe adopting a dog right then wasn't a good choice for them, because it's also what's best for the dog.
I wish I had done the same as I had an adoption fail a year ago. Late night scrolling on my local Human Society's website and saw a dog who looked spot on like another dog I'd had and had actually surrendered to the shelter about a decade ago. I had thought this might bar me from adopting again, had been expecting more of an interview before adopting. They called me I think the very next morning though asking me to come pick her up that very day. I had nothing for the dog already. No food, no bed, no crate, no shampoo, no leash, nada. I felt it would've been shameful saying no, so...I picked the dog up. On top of suddenly needing to buy all of her items, they also had a mandate of taking the dog to the vet for any missing shots within three days of getting them. This was not informed on the adoption application, only explained in person to me when I got there.
Turned out, the dog also had a mild ear infection as well, so that cost even more money. In just two weeks, I was so behind on bills with trying to handle the dog, I was borrowing against my paycheck, which is just a cute way of saying I was needing payday loans (just using apps this time with less interest rates than real payday loans). The final blow came when my work from home job changed to needing two days in the office a week. The dog wasn't house broken completely and my house wasn't a close enough distance to really run back and take her out, then run back to work at lunch. And that would've meant more money for gas as well). I also wanted to buy better food for her than kibble and was doing a combination of wet and dry food with some greens, but it was banrupting me.
After just two months, I admitted defeat. I brought her back to the shelter with a lot of her items so that the shelter could use them. I told myself I wouldn't cry but I did and just blurted that I felt like a failure. Two dogs I'd now given to the shelter...
I shouldn't have let my emotions lead me and late night scrolls through the shelter's website is not good. I thought that since I worked from home, it would be easy, but it actually wasn't (I'm the main line of my office. When I had to frequently take her out, calls piled up, then I would be stuck doing call-backs and fielding more incoming calls. I felt stressed because I never got a moment to just relax. I lived in an upstairs apartment and while hindsight has shown me that I could've created a potty spot on my balcony, I had never heard of this before then). I did the best I could for the dog, but I wasn't the right home for her and that still saddens me. Maybe in that adoption video I mentioned, the other prospective owner already saw all of the issues I discussed and that's why they changed their minds, we don't know. Doesn't make them a horrible person, though, it's better to realize beforehand that things won't work than to shamefully have to return a pet.

Then after I tell them, I can’t do the dog they say “well there’s another groomer we can’t come to.” Why don’t they just say The dog is aggressive first because there are things that I can try. Thank God I am retired. Keep up the good work girl.

It happens way more than is being talked about sadly. And it doesn’t even have to be extreme abuse like beating the dog etc., but a LOT of groomers abuse dogs they groom in various ways: forcing them to stand in place for 1+ hrs without any breaks, painfully pulling their hair while brushing out mats, allowing shaving blades to get really hot and burn the dog’s skin etc etc. That’s why I only go to groomers that allow me to be in the room during the groom. I wouldn’t leave my young child alone with a hairdresser so why would I leave my dog alone with a groomer? Unless it is a trusted person, of course, who I know is gentle with the dogs, like Vanessa. 💙

Vanessa, you ARE an influencer! An excellent one!! You influence people to take better care of their pets by demystifying grooming :) You were the first groomer whose videos didn’t make me feel ashamed about my cat getting matted (I got him when I was young and inexperienced and expected him to be able to take care of it all on his own) while also teaching how to safely fix it. Thanks to you, my 14 y/o cat got to experience his first ever bath with conditioner this week and I can’t thank you enough for your videos and products. I’m sure my cat would be one of your reddit haters if he knew how to type because now he has a little bald butt, daily brushing, and his baths will take twice as long from here on out lol

IDK if anyone else would find this funny, but I used one or your tricks in the most unexpected way, and I was chuckling to myself about it.
Yesterday I was washing my car, and when I was finished, I wanted to wash the extra soap out of the fluffy microfiber cloth that I was using. I tried using the shower setting and I was getting nowhere rinsing the soap out. All the sudden a lightbulb turned on in my head...Hey maybe I should try the flood setting, like Vanessa does with double coated dogs. DING DING DING! It worked like a charm. Who would have thought that a dog grooming trick would come in handy while wash a car 😆

The beautiful thing about triggers that folk experience gives them the opportunity to realise it, see it and deal with the why, then they are a much happier person 😊

I personally definitely don't agree with the first statement of the first comment read! Vanesa, you groom these pets with thoughtfulness, sensitivity, patience & professionalism. Your groom is not just about getting the job done (well). It's about *how* you do the job (well). And that, to me, is something the best kind of groomer does. My idea of a perfect groom/er is a content pet with little to no stress that is not necessarily perfectly groomed by the looks of it. You take their limits into consideration and that is EVERYTHING. IMHO, you ARE the best groomer I have 'met' so far

I only found Vanessa's channels about a month ago so I've been watching ALL her videos...which means pretty much all her content is fresh in my mind. She is such an affirming, explanatory, kind, talented groomer that I'm honestly baffled where the haters are getting their material from. In fact, I have a very senior dog with awful (managed) arthritis, and watching GirlWithTheDogs gave me the confidence to get some basic tools to groom my pup in our home. She can lay down the whole time, I can sit on the floor with her, and she's much calmer/in far less discomfort! So, the haters can hate--Vanessa has helped my dog (and others, I'm sure!) immensely simply by making her content and putting the education out there. Keep doing your thing!

I have heard Vanessa say that she's not sure why the previous groomer wouldn't take a specific dog anymore because the dog wasn't too bad during the groom for Vanessa, but I've never heard her say bad things about a groomer. It's more like she's curious about what happened previously to the dog for another groomer to stop taking them. I would be afraid to groom a dog that another groomer stopped grooming, so good for you Vanessa!

We saw the title of this video and expressed surprise to each other that you would get negative comments.
The first thought I had was that some people who feel inferior in their work react like they are being attacked when they are presented with an example of somebody doing a conscientious job, even though the presenter has no knowledge of the person who imagines that they are being attacked.
Then as we listened to comments, that certainly seems to have been the case.
The most satisfying thing about your videos is your empathy for the animals-then, the relief we see in the “after” segments…there’s something satisfying about seeing order and comfort brought to a creature that might have been in discomfort.
We recognize your kindness and therefore interpret your explanations and breed descriptions as being humanely motivated.
    Don’t mind the haters.

I find your content very informative including the breed information. Folks need to be educated about the various breeds that they may be interested in getting Each breed has it’s different characteristics and it’s so helpful for informed decisions. Too many dogs get returned or abandoned because the owners don’t realize what they’ve gotten into.

My mother groomed dogs professionally when she was young and continued until she became too unwell in our home. They were poodles, schauzers, lhasas, etc. One day one snapped at either me or mom, and I mentioned it to the owner at pick up. My mom told them i was lying and when they had left I got into so much trouble! I think the biggest reward for her was when the owner picked up the dogs, gushing over the dogs so cute with bows in their hair, and she didn't want them to feel bad and not bring them back. The dogs would be so excited to see their owners, they would piddle on the floor, and it was just nbd to her!

It is 100% clear your TOP priority is the health of the animal. Your commentary on breeds is informative and objective. You make it clear that you have hours to groom while most groomers don't. That is why you can take tough cases -- not because the other groomers are bad at their job. You are so careful and caring. As an animal behaviorist myself I respect your experience and opinion.

Vanessa, I do not understand why people complain about your videos. As some one who has watched all your videos, I see you as very caring, protective of your animals . I believe people are professional complainers, and are determined to bring others down. Vanessa you do consider the owner as well, there is nothing wrong in giving advise that will help the animals welfare. The owners should have enough common sense to take your advise without being offended. I think you are doing well!!!!

What?? Do dogs (and cats) actually know they are being filmed? That's kind of insane, isn't it? If they are fearful, I think, it's because of the groom itself, the enviroment..but most, I would say, just depends on the breed and ones personality, not the filming.

All of the comments about supporting rare/incorrect colors are so funny to me because one of the main things that made me less trepidatious about you was how solid you were about calling out BYB practices, color breeding practices, etc. Like, the internet is full of dog people who have vastly different opinions about ethics than I do, so it was great to see you actually have knowledge about ethical breeding practices. Like there's still stuff we have different opinions on, but i swear some people think any interaction with a merle doodle is an endorsement of the continued breeding of merle doodles... we have to deal with the dogs in front of us while also educating people to make better choices in the future.

With the cat video, something I wanted was the extra info that was later pinned in the comments. It provided more context about the cats being at a hotel before coming (rather than being in a single crate for four hours, which is what it seemed like from the original video)-especially when the video indicated they didn’t actually need grooming, suggesting that the cats were put through a lot of stress for no reason. I didn’t want the owners publicly shamed, but it was appreciated knowing the owners cared about their cats and realized their mistakes. Sure, viewers shouldn’t judge the owners, but that’s much more difficult when we don’t have the full story.
In the future, having that additional info would be helpful when the video drops. Nevertheless, the vitriol Vanessa received overall was awful and excessive.

You know all this stuff upside down and backwards!
I fully support you and your efforts to educate people!
    On the topic of doodles
IE: almost ANY breed crossed with a poodle of any size
    I’m an ex groomer
    1-some breeders lie
    2-lots of generalized info
The bottom line is poodle hair keeps growing
    So
Lots of the other half of the cross may or may not have a continuous growing coat.
So our opinion in our shop was
    The result of a poodle?????
Is like tossing a deck of cards in the air!
You just don’t know what combination comes down!
Poodle conformation with retriever coat ( not always matted but with jammed undercoat)
Retriever conformation poodle hair(matted beyond belief)
