I heard you mention in one of your previous videos that you used to be a software engineer.
I find it very interesting that you did that, since even though both jobs require excellent troubleshooting and problem solving skills they are still quite different.
Could you make a video about your previous career as a software developer and transition to electronics repair engineer? I think many people (myself included) will be very interested in it.
+1
I think there is nothing surprising. People close to software are also close to hardware (most of the time)
I think he graduated Elect Eng but was a web developer for a while, it was before opening NorthridgeFix
What I've learned so far:
1. Get a thermal camera
2. Plug the thing in
3. Identify the hottest component
4. Unplug the thing
5. Remove the hottest component
6. Plug in again and inspect
7. If the thing is not working go to step 3
8. Unplug the thing, send to client
9. Profit!!!
the price for good thermal cam over $2000 😂
The man who will use his skill and constructive imagination to see how much he can give for a dollar, instead of how little he can give for a dollar, is bound to succeed. ~ Henry Ford
This is what I love about fixing and development in terms of programming or doing stuff with hardware. We can see in this professional man's eyes the joy when he made the flash drive work

Love the slow motion part!, really helps us normal folk appreciate your knowledge and how you work 👍👍
Back up the files to a new drive too! Great customer service!
Great video. I used to work at a place called Haven Lighting where part of what I did was to troubleshoot failed circuit boards. On some of the larger ceramic caps (0805, 1206), I could tell that the short circuit on the board was located in the cap if it appeared to be cracked, even just a little.
No wayyyyy!!! I thought those things almost never failed in that way!~!! How many times have you come across a problem like this??
Just finished watching your 9 things learned as a car salesman, great vid!
I agree. It deserves a lot more views. I may have to change the title. ua-cam.com/video/uTpmbSqd6uo/v-deo.html
Those who are meant to see it, will see it. It appeals to those who watch your vids for the philosophy and repair as opposed to those who just watch for repair. Although, something like "9 important lessons in Business" might draw more attention!
@@NorthridgeFix I watched it too and I was flabbergasted.
I also agree. I learned a lot. I also work on a retail IT supplies and everyday customers were different just like he said. Also selling laptops and pcs are psychological. Great video.
@@dankan4459 I watch NorthridgeFix for inspiration.
Always enjoy watching your videos from Australia. Keep them coming and thank you.
You do the cleanest repairs. I was watching other youtubers and men, they don’t even care they are on camera. They should be ashamed 😂😂
are you talking about louis rossmann
Good job the customer would be very happy and relieved it looks like important date on it
Be great to see a Northridge fix bloopers vid. 😂👏👏👏👏👏👏👍
Love that flir cam 👌 Hot is indeed good😁
You use battery power banks a lot, rather than mains powered hubs. Why is that? I suspect you have a good reason!
So much knowledge and tips. Thanks Alex for sharing us the value of your experience. Because of you I am going into Electrical Engineering and learning as i go via Google and UA-cam watching you and others. Bless Bless. Blooper was the cherry on top. Hot Hot haha. Have a great evening. Til next View.

Well, this was an interesting flux advertisement for the freshest flux on the market, with a bonus of a quick electronics repair! Well flux me! 🙃
Always enjoy, watching this videos, greetings from Belgium.
Also, any idea what that cap actually did if it worked without?
It is probably a decoupling capacitor.
so, what was the function of the capacitor if the flash drive worked without it?
Have the same question
Decoupling
When you removed the cap. You tested the two pads, and one had a long beep and the other a short beep. Can u explain the difference between the two sounds ?
Today I learnt "hot is good is" 😂
You passed the quiz
Haha
Big bro please tell me how to i clear my doubts by you please give me feedback 🙏🙏🙏🙏🙏🙏🙏🙏🙏🙏🙏🙏🙏🙏🙏🙏🙏🙏
Egg is first came 🤣
Lol
I enjoy your method of practical teaching of repair and fix.
Excellent video. Also, Keep the Bloopers coming. There is a lot of comedy in you that needs to come out. :)
Why didn't you replace the cap? These bypass cap could be important to filter out inrush currents when you plug in to the port.
I was wondering that too, but I guess because he is transferring the data to a new thumb drive, he didn't need to replace the cap. Just need the drive to be working to get the files off it.
You know, if I had all these tools 30 some years ago when I was in highschool learning electronics, I would have been in heaven! Lol. But we weren't too bad, we had great oscilloscopes and chip programmers in assembler
Great videos , Keep making more. can you send me the link/ talk about the Hot tweezer
You are the best 👌
Thanks Brother
very nice and clean and short and full of dtailed note video . it was better than 2 ours of seeing some repair video... learned so mouch from you from outside of the world...love every word that you say... again tanks...
One question : have you ever prepared your own flux from pine rosin and alcohol ? . if not then try it out just for testing, I have seen your soldering work and it is flawless even if having good gear and materials is the 40 points of the job you are very close to 100 points, after watching few of your videos i can say you are skilled in diagnostics and that comes from experience you got a like and i subscribe to your channel to learn more.
Would you ever try to replace the cap ? Or is the drive just a cheapy? How to work out the value of the cap?
It is probably a decoupling capacitor and they tend to have a standard value. But you could find the chip manual and find out what the manufacturer recommends.
First we learn smoke is good today's lesson hot is good you are just amazing sir
Fascinating! Exploring is the solution!! Life adventures...

Good work 💪👷👏

Amazing video and good diagnosis. How would you find a replacement capacitor without seeing any printed information on the old capacitor?
Lot of times it will work fine without the capacitor, because most of the caps around an ic are bypass capacitors to suppress noise. When there is no noise, they do not do anything. When it is a big cap, it will suppress low frequency noise, when it is a small cap, it suppresses high frequency noise.
Normally you will see big caps on the start of the power lines on the board, and small caps as close to the ic's as possible.
It is not needed to exactly match the value if you want to replace it. Lots of times the same are used on a board around the different ic's, so you can just measure another one to get an idea of the value.
In this case it is not needed to replace it because he can get the data off it without it.
@@m4th1js when you say noise do you mean actual sound noise or noise like fluctuations in power draw and that the cap is there to collect it and dispatch a steady amount?
@@ChristopherJones16 Noise like fluctuations in power. English is not my first language, so it can be that i could have better used another word to describe it.
There must be some very valuable data on that drive to send it in for recovery. It also makes me realize SMART statistics (usually unavailable on USB drives) will not warn you about unmonitored component failures like that shorted capacitor.
I tried to fix a ps4 hdmi port but the hdmi port didn't fit , so I order two ps4 hdmi port from your store , I hope it fits . By the way I like your videos very helpful.
Simply amazing!

If the nand chip has burn marks and signs that some pins are basically reflowed because of how hot it gets (and no caps seem to be shorting) does this mean its likely unrepairable?
Hi can you explain how you check the short on the cap is it with a multimeter and can you explain in more detail? thanks for all the great videos.
The multimeter continuity setting (i.e. the setting where it beeps, if the two probes are touched) makes the measurement with DC. A good capacitor behaves like an open circuit to DC, so when you put the multimeter probes at the two ends, it will not beep. But if the capacitor is shorted the meter will beep.
By the way Hussain, a good job as always 🙂
He checks continuity across the capacitor. That bleep from the multimeter means its shorting (closed circuit). Alternatively, you can check if there is resistance across it and if there is, that's the same as a short.
Thanks everyone for your help much appreciated
@@xxycom8963 is that what he means by diode mode?
You're simply the best
1:28 Make sure you meantion the safe air suction. That flux smoke is poisonous.
I am viewing fro Nigeria.
Very well done, good job, nice fix. And very nice explanation👌👍
I don't see flux age being a problem.
Great Work 👍 Best Regards from Germany
good job
Can you explain what was the role of that capacitor in the overall functioning of the USB drive, since after removing the cap, the USB started working normally.
Northbridfix is fixed no doubt
The cap is connected to one of the output pins of the controller, isn't it?. That's why both the cap and controller get hot. If the cap were connected to one of the controller's inputs or Vcc input, only the cap will get hot....
Very nice explanation of the things, I enjoyed, including the last part :)
I always watching your video I learned a lot thanks
Support from kerala
Shouldn't have put a new capacitor in?
BTW the cheapos use a 4 V cap on the 5 Volt line, this is why they blow up so often...
love your videos. Looking forward to the gpu repair
Blooper Classic!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
When the damaged capacitor is removed, Is there any need .to replace it back with another?
The plungers with your flux. Are they just floating, or do they attach to the syringe piston? The reason I ask is because with big syringes, residual pressure from compression of the piston can cause very substantial oozing. If the plunger doesn't latch onto the piston, there's no way to relieve that pressure by pulling back on the plunger.
The plunger is attached snug. It's not detached or loose. No oozing.
So why didnt they just manufacture those thumb drives without that capacitor?
The problem in the European countries is that if we order the flux from USA shipping and customs are going to cost more then the flux himself. Price of it at my country for the 559, 10cc packaging is $6 - $10, which is unreal (Probably they sell a fake one), they do not have the production date or expire date at all
Most chorting broblem is in the capacitor component
Sir you are expert in fixing devices. amazing such a knowledgeful man. Great. khizar from pakistan
You must put new cap back at that place..
Brilliant!
My fav program would have to be same as what the police use only cause I got a copy

Hello, I have a problem with a laptop lcd/led port on an Acer AN515-42 laptop that has been partially burnt out this is after I installed a replacement lcd cable. I do have a picture if I can possible upload. What do you charge? Could you fix something like this at all?

Will mudslinger spray stop dust buildup safely in a pc?
Best !!! nice job done :)
I wish i can be good at fixing stuffs so i can make people happy.
How does it still work with a component removed?
The capacitor is there to stabilise the voltage and keep noise down. In 99.9 % of cases it will work without. It's just good practice to have it.
@@zaprodk thank you for the reply !
Ramadan Kareem!! Well done ..
What are you using for the desoldering hot tweezers? Make and model?
Noob here: if you remove the capacitor and did not put on new good capacitor in and the flash drive still works... why there is capacitores in the first place ? Did you put a new capacitor after ?
good
what was the funcktion of the dammage cap. and why can the flashdrive function with out it.? if it has no funcktion why did the manufacture use money to solder it on the board?
Thanks thanks thanks bro.....superrrrrrr super job don good job...
why you did not replace the damage capacitor sir i wanna know if it's ok without it even if it still functions well.
nice fix by the way
Awesome job as always 👍
I'm just curious, how much do you charge for these types of repairs (data recovery).
Is it by hour or a set rate for flash drive repairs?
You can give them a call and they'll gladly let you know.
How do you get those "hot tweezers" ?
Why didn't you have to replace the cap? And if you were going to how would you figure out what cap to use?
No need to replace the caps. you need a donor board or schematic
It's a bypass capacitor. Not needed to get files.
@@NorthridgeFix thank you for the reply!
absolutely love this channel
Awesome
I have about 8 urgent fixes on my desk. Customers are waiting. Can I sell you some flux?
Nice.
Can an SSD that had power supply reversed be repaired? (don't ask, power connector wire colors were reversed) It made crackling, popping noises (4 ?) when connected. Thanks
Maybe fried the MOSFET on the circuit board. You may have also got 12v instead of 5v if you're trying to take power from an old molex connector.
