If drugs hadn’t consumed him, he’d be one of the biggest stars in Hollywood, right alongside his immensely talented brother.
His brother isn't that talented...and there's no guarantee how long an actors career will span.
Malcolm Drake yes he is oh my shush
No one needs your negativity
@@malcolmdrake6137 he is one of the most talented ever. Go watch The Master and find out.
Malcolm Drake did u really just say Joaquin isn't talented i-
Malcolm Drake I know you didn’t just say that
He would have totally been in Leonardo DiCaprio’s place right now if he hadn’t passed away
And have a bigger legacy then Leo and Joaquin
No he would've been in River's place.
Roger Taylor nah leo is way better
Roger Taylor it will be the same why u ppl don’t understand that there a place enough for every actor in the business
Why do you act like legends can not coexist
He was the first choice for The Basketball Diaries, Total Eclipse and James Cameron wrote the character of Jack Dawson in Titanic for River. All these roles went to Leo Dicaprio. Gosh!!!
They do look similar, their mannerisms are somewhat similar as well. Plus Leo and River both had that sharp look that the directors were probably going for.
I’m not surprised Leo got them
@@guitarboy0211 they look similar coz i think Leo copied River
but he deserved those roles though. i mean can u imagine thses movies without Leo? he is very talented. But if River did it, i would not complain at all
I don't know how you all are going through it.... But Leo is the first choice for his every role, he has done.... No matter what people say but Leo is incomparable with River.... Leo will always great.
Poor River, he died an untimely death at only 23, yet he already proved himself to be a talented performer.💗 I always sob when Chris breaks down to Gordie during the milk money scene in "Stand by Me"! 😭💔
that's one of my favorite scenes in the movie!
One of my favorite films so relatable. And that scene always get me too
Trina Q I can’t even imagine that. I’m 22 and I still haven’t lived.

He’s the same age as my dad.
Ash Lynx was based on this angel😟
yeah. i love them both so much
and so many similarities I can't
🥺omg yesss
🥺🥺
When I thought banana fish couldn't hurt me anymore I found out about him being based of this man....
joaquin's 911 call is so sad. he was so audibly distressed and scared
That boy would've unintentionally changed the world with a soul like he had. Tragic he never got the chance.
He does every single day, actually.
No he wouldn’t have , that’s just cloud thinking lol what’s wrong with people? Infantile
There were more well known people who could have changed with a soul like that. But there is always the same tendency, they die at relatively young age from some kind of overdose, accident and etc. 🙂
No he wouldnt. He was just an actor. People say dumbest stuff. He was just a kid actor w drug problem
@@weasley2o13 every day? How? I havent heard his name in years? How is dead person changing world every day?
I think it was very disrespectful to have put Joaquin’s 911 call.
Minnie it really was. Idk why they thought it was a good idea but watchmojo is a kind of a terrible channel so i’m not surprised
i mean its public and easy to access.
It's public Info
I think omitting important parts of the story is disrespectful.
That 911 call adds context and weight to the story. It helps people empathize with a distraught brother who is normally an untouchable star that people barely recognize as human a lot of the time. Hearing that call makes it easier for the ignorant masses to see him as the person he is. Plus, it’s important info that I would rather be aware of, than not.
Idk what it is with people being so touchy that they would rather censor the world.
@@skahg4771I agree as well as it also being public info that is easily accessible to listen to.
Hearing Joaquins voice on the phone.... oh my god you can hear how scared he is...
But damn he was gorgeous he would have been super hyped up if he was a teen today✋😔
Indeed, I reckon that River would be just as hailed as Timothee Chalamet, or any other teen idol of the 2010s or 2020s!😍🌟
That's all you got from his story...? Really...?

I was 20 years old when River Phoenix died, and his death had touched me deeply... still does! He was so frickin' talented, and my celebrity crush! He will forever be missed!
I was 20 also...I had loved him since I was 13 and I was devastated.
I was a new 18. I was 10 when I saw “Stand By Me”. When he passed, I cried and cried and cried. I adored him so much and to this day - if I think about him too much, I get choked up. He was such a beautiful soul. So special and it is incredibly unfair that he was taken from our world.💖
We lost a great talent. My favorite movie of his is stand by me.
i wasn’t even born but i love him
@Lisa Surlie stop bro, a drug isn't anyone's fault but your own. DEAL WITH YOUR IMMATURITY.
I always wonder what Leonardo Dicaprio career would have been like if River didn't pass away.
Probably the same, it's not like they were the same age and fought over the same parts. River was older and went for different movies.
Me too.
What?! Why would that have made a difference? 😒. Its pretty evident that there's room for many actors to coexist at the same time and be very famous and succesful. Many movies and movies roles to go around. Kinda weird to even bring that up.
@@somberstricken4424
Well River was supposed to do Total Eclipse and Basketball Diaries before he passed away.
They only have a 4 year gap I don't think River is that old.
Crazy to think that Joaquin said that Leo would win any role in auditions from him, We all know if River was there he would take these roles.
@@kgaming5977 I don't think so, I think after Gilbert Grape, Leonardo proved he was a fantastic actor. Not to mention he's a lot better looking.
All I know is he is an Animal activist. Cried when his girlfriend ordered non veg food infront of him. Wanted to do something for wildlifes. Such an exceptional actor. Wanted to make his world happy and peaceful. Suffered very much at an young age which he didn't deserved though. Got an Oscar nomination at an young age. My condolences to River. But hollywood is evil.
the fact that Ash lynx from banana fish was based on River Phoenix makes it even more sad🥺ash’s looks and style is all based on River😭Im just finding it out now and I can’t stop crying😭
Same goes for their similar pasts too
I was 14/15 when River died, my friends and I idolised him and Keanu Reeves, we watched and rewatched as many of his films as we could get our hands on. My own private Idaho was one of our all time favourites. My desk was covered in quotes from their movies, my walls plastered with their posters. When River died it was for me the first time one of my hero’s died. I remember being intently disappointed in him that he died from an overdose. I will never forget River Phoenix for all those reasons and now as an adult I can understand more about his life and how things ended as they did, I can understand films like My own Private Idaho in a way I couldn’t back then.
He will always be such an important part of my life and memories. My best friend who idolised him with me died a year ago (her first anniversary is in two days, the timing of this vid feels personal) thinking of him makes both my heart ache for her and burst with glorious happy memories of our adolescence. They will forever be tied up together in my heart.
Bless your heart ❤️✌️
You are not alone
Sending love over to you❤️❤️❤️
I heard the he and Keanu Reeves were friends and it was hard on him too.
It was during the shooting of Speed while it happend and they changed scènes to make Keanu more easy to do
They weren't friends they were soulmates. Keanu doesn't speak much but there's allot more to him than he lets on. They had a platonic romance, look them up together and you'll see.

I'm a Spiritual Medium and the Spirit who lived within River, now back in Angel form, came through to me yesterday and today. He was very clear about his continuing Higher Purpose to help end oppression on this planet, as part of the Mass Awakening which is just in the beginning stages. With Phoenix’s early death, three of his potential film roles went to Leonardo DiCaprio. The first was The Basketball Diaries, to which Phoenix had long been attached as the lead actor. Finally, Canadian director James Cameron had hoped to cast Phoenix in his ambitious film project Titanic

During the performance by P, Forrest said that Phoenix tapped him on the shoulder to tell him he was not feeling well and that he thought he had overdosed. Forrest said to Phoenix that he didn't think that he was overdosing because he could stand and talk. Nonetheless, he offered to take Phoenix home, but Phoenix declined, saying he was feeling better. A few moments later, Forrest said that a commotion erupted in the club and he went outside to find Mathis screaming as her boyfriend was lying on the sidewalk having convulsions. Joaquin called 9-1-1, but was unable to determine whether Phoenix was breathing. His sister Rain proceeded to give him mouth-to-mouth resuscitation.[40]
When the ambulance arrived, Phoenix was still alive and Flea went with him to Cedars-Sinai Medical Center. When Forrest arrived at the hospital, he saw Mathis standing in the hallway crying.[41] Further attempts to resuscitate Phoenix at the hospital were unsuccessful. He was pronounced dead at 1:51 a.m. PST on the morning of October 31, 1993 at the age of 23.[42][43]
In the 2013 book Last Night at the Viper Room: River Phoenix and the Hollywood He Left Behind, Gavin Edwards blames Frusciante for being the one who gave Phoenix the drugs that took his life. In an interview with director William Richert, Edwards discusses Phoenix's death, stating that Samantha Mathis also accused Frusciante.
River didn't want to go that night. She (Mathis) offered to take Joaquin (Leaf back then) and Rain for him since Joaquin was still underage. River changed his mind at the last minute and ran to meet them at the elevator. So River arrived with Samantha, Joaquin, and Rain, they got a booth in the back and he waited to be invited up to play. He stayed sober because he was planning on getting onstage with Flea. After he found out that there is not enough room onstage for him, he was going to take his guitar back to his table and play." According to Richert, after reaching the club, Mathis said John Frusciante approached their table, offered River a little plastic blue cup and said "drink this, Riv, it'll make you feel fabulous." River drank it and suffered an immediate reaction. His neck bulged, his back twitched, and he complained "something’s wrong." He then vomited at the table.[44]
Richert said that Mathis later changed her story, no longer mentioning Frusciante by name. Richert also mentioned that following the death of Phoenix, Frusciante became paranoid, and threatened to kill himself because he feared that he would be arrested. He claimed that Frusciante locked himself for a few days in the mansion where the Red Hot Chili Peppers recorded their 1991 album Blood Sugar Sex Magik. Richert said that Johnny Depp had to console Frusciante, and assure him that nobody was going to jail. At the time, Phoenix's father was also angry with Frusciante over his son's death, and in an interview stated: "Tell him if I find him I'm going to kill him. He's very rich and very young, 23 like River, but he's a terrible addict who has become a pusher..." The family never pressed charges against anyone for their son's death.[44]
In 2018, Samantha Mathis said that she and Phoenix had originally only intended to drop off Phoenix's siblings at the Viper Room on the way to her house, but Phoenix decided to stay for a while after he was asked to perform with the band. She insisted that during their time dating she had known him to be sober, but "In the days before he died, though, I knew something was going on...I didn't see anyone doing drugs [that night] but he was high in a way that made me feel uncomfortable."[45] She added that "the heroin that killed him didn't happen until he was in the Viper Room. I have my suspicions about what was going on, but I didn't see anything." Mathis went to the bathroom, and on her way back to the table, saw Phoenix apparently engaged in a scuffle with another person. The bouncers removed both men from the club. Mathis shouted at the other man "What have you done? What are you on?", only to be told by another person "Leave him alone, you're spoiling his high." By that point, according to her account, Phoenix had fallen to the ground and begun to convulse.[46]
According to Gibby Haynes, the band was performing their song "Michael Stipe" while Phoenix was outside the venue having seizures on the sidewalk.[47] When the news filtered through the club, Flea left the stage and rushed outside. By that time, paramedics had arrived on the scene and found Phoenix turning cyanotic, in full cardiac arrest and in asystole. They administered medication in an attempt to restart his heart.
The following day, the club became a makeshift shrine, with fans and mourners leaving flowers, pictures and candles on the sidewalk, as well as graffiti messages on the walls of the venue.[48] A sign was placed in the window that read, "With much respect and love to River and his family, The Viper Room is temporarily closed. Our heartfelt condolences to all his family, friends and loved ones. He will be missed."[49] The club remained closed for a week. Depp continued to close the club every year on October 31 until selling his share in 2004.

River , was one of those once in a life time talents , he went through so much real life struggles, he and his family , I think that is why he us so damn talented and believable in his rolls , because he went through the struggles in reality.. so he could relate to his performances.. he was a child actor , and a lot of child actors can’t handle the pressures of fame’ look at “ Drew Barrymore “ Macaulay Culkin’ and Edward furlong’ Lindsey Lohan, etc.. River was a great actor and a great person , he’ll be remembered for eternity and beyond .. like Bubby Holly said’ relax man’ the sky belongs to the stars, 🌟 right! “ RIP Riv”
Him and Jonathan brandis were my favs😍😍😍
I just watched My Own Private Idaho, and his acting campfire scene will always be in my heart.
Rest In Peace. Young Indiana Jones.
River Phoenix and Sean Connery both starred in Indiana Jones and The Last Crusade. River as a Young Indy and Sean as Henry Jones Sr., Indy's father. And both of them died on October 31, the day of Halloween. River in 1993 of an overdose, and Sean in 2020 of pneumonia. My condolences to both of them. 🙏🏾🙏🏾
Watch Mojo, great video! Enjoy your Tuesday!💯🙏👐
He was the best person ever. There aren’t words for the person River was. An earth angel. ❤️💔
😥😥❤️
Joaquin wasn't born with that name his parents named him Leaf. So when you specifically mentioned his siblings and their unusual names, it's weird that you didn't go with his real name.
Actually I believe they got it right, and it's the other way around: Joaquin is what his parents named him, and then he went by Leaf for a while presumably because he wanted a cool hippie nature name like his siblings :) It was actually River, I believe, who encouraged him to go back to Joaquin!
@@stephaniel2850 I remember reading that somewhere. He wanted a cool nature themed name like his siblings so he changed it to Leaf temporarily.
@@stephaniel2850 well I reckon, I had if mixed up. So WatchMojo was right. Should've known they usually do their research.
He was named Joaquin. He wanted to be called leaf, because all his siblings had names like, River and Summer. He changed it to Joaquin again at the age of 16 after his brother urged him to start acting again and use his birth name since he was sure that this would be a big name in the future.
@@veganbombshell No they didn't. A lot of it matches with what Joaquin and others told.
Friends comes in and out of your life like busboys in a restaurant. What a film, what a actor. Rip river
River was one cool actor back in the day .I say seen all of movies from that time except his very last one ,And I remember when it he passed away all those years ago ,Since it was huge news at the time it happen ,And sometimes I wonder had been a live how "Interview with a Vampire " would played. out with him in it ,Anyways he was one great actor for his day ,Also seems his bother did a great job at keeping the Phoenix name alive ,And is great actor in his own right .
I realised that he would of been 50 this year 😥 makes you wonder what his life would of been like if he hadn't passed away
