He was a good actor, but you couldn’t help but compare how much he seemed to be “imitating” Phoenix (even if it was pure projection on my part. It took years for me to finally see that Leo was a great actor in his own right. But I’m pretty sure had River lived, he would have continued to get the critical accolades and chose more interesting and complex roles and perhaps Leo would get the B projects. I remember girls were obsessed with River, but he (and Johnny Depp) seemed so uncomfortable as teen idols. Leo felt more like a Jason Priestly type and I’m sure she still would have been successful. Can’t believe River was only 23 when he died.

Looks like a good movie, I think it is very sad and tragic, he is an exceptional actor in his mannerisms and characterisation and focus and intensity. He is amazing in this role for someone so young and would have been one of the greats. He had his demons and that is ultimately what took his life, maybe he just shone too brightly. And is that actually him playing the piano because he is also exceptional at that.

You should really check him out in My Own Private Idaho or Dogfight or Mosquito Coast. He REALLY shines there But like... what do you expect from a guy who's literally known for making his characters like real people. He doesn't do overdramatic overacting and that's the beauty in his simplicity.
