Hey bro! 1st I wanna say thank you so much for basically paying tribute to a living legend my grandfather Papo Pepin. It's always great to see a lot of inspiring percussionist take a little bit of what hes been able to do in this world and share it with others. It's not the easiest thing to do To emulate and basically try to dissect his phrases and certain patterns that he does with different artist in different occasion's no 2 are ever the same but the one thing that is definitely the same is his slap. He has a very unique slap a signature of his own that you can always tell it's him playing.
So again, I really do appreciate you shedding some light on this and continue doing what you're doing. hopefully we'll cross paths in the future.
    Stay blessed,
    Christian Pepin

Christian Pepin wow!! Thanks Christian!!! Appreciate those kind words. I’m humbled.... and trust we all have tried to do something your grandfather Papo has done and have failed miserably haha so this was just my attempt on showing his special sound! Thanks bro!

Hi Christian, a couple of years back I had the pleasure of visiting a Papo Pepin / Trio Cachimbo gig during a holiday in NY and recorded some souvenirs - first clip (out of 4) is ua-cam.com/video/ijNGvteNU5s/v-deo.html You may like watching them too.
We had a great time. I did remember the show, and that we had a chat with the band afterwards - but not his name. Until I bought myself a set of bongos recently, which of course I have to learn (I normally play bass in pimiento.nl ). So I came across the Percussion Life channel, and in this episode I immediately I recognised your grandpa. Greetings from the Netherlands!

I had the fortune of seeing Papo Pepin on several occasions. He particularly impressed me when he was playing with Louie Ramirez and was playing one conga drum with a full salsa band. He made that one drum sound like three. It was amazing. He is one of the greatest. He is a testimony to less is more. Thanks for covering him.

His Willie Rosario/Tito Allen/Roberto Roena time was him at his very peak. It is a pleasure listening to his “timba” and solos. “Pa pa ra pa pín pín, Papo Pepín te toca la tumba” from Roena’s “Sigue tu rumbo “.

The Tito Allen albums on Alegre (the ones from the 70s produced by Louie Ramirez) introduced me to his sound and should be required listening for all congueros. His solos for example on Guancona, Cachon, or Lluvia are so unique but just the way he plays tumbao behind the orchestra throughout is special.

El disco de "Untouchable" de Tito Allen es uno de los mejores si no el mejor para el estilo del gran Papo Pepín. Tuve el privilegio de tocar con él ela Banda Latina de Ray Santos en NYC a principios de los noventa. Tremendo personaje.

On Roberto Roena’s last album for Fania, Super Apollo 47:50 he takes a long solo on yo tenía una mujer. Adalberto puts a soneo from típica 73, te llevó conmigo “La Candela” 1975 Willie Rosario did a tune before 1972 Arrepentido Pecadores where he takes a solo. I believe he may be on early to mid 70’s Kako recordings as well.

WOW - you got me! I am hooked on your channel. In the beginning, I never liked Papo Pepin's style. Why? simply put - I didn't know what I didn't know... I didn't like what I didn't understand - until I did. And now, he is one of my top three congueros - none of his tumbaos are the same.
As a commenter said, less is more, he does more with one drum than anyone else could do with 5. And I am saddened to admit, I learned this way too late... "Si Tu No Te Fueras" his tumbao there cannot be duplicated, no two tumbaos are ever the same. I went back and deep dived into his Roena recordings... Willie Rosario... even the Louie Ramirez stuff! Un matched Unrivaled.
    Great find!!! Great Homage!!!

Hey Eric, thank you for your contributions to the world of percussion! This is a fun pattern to learn/play. I added a slight change; instead of coming back with closed slap with the left hand after the two open tones on the low drum, I used an open slap instead. But I'll practice it both ways. Thanks for sharing this with us!
