I had an absolute blast winter drifting my 2022 Subaru BRZ! Coming from a front wheel drive civic I wanted to take some time to understand how the car would react in a daily driving situation and it was a ton of fun sliding around the BRZ. With studded winter tires on my BRZ (from PMCTires.com) I feel confident that the 2022 BRZ can handle the winter conditions.

I honestly feel like RWD is a lot more fun and to a degree, more controllable than FWD in light/moderate snow conditions because u can actually feel what the body of the car is doing and adjust your steering/throttle accordingly
Rwd is always mote controllable. Rear wheels use their grip to push. Front wheels use their grip to steer. Fwd only uses rear wheels to lean on.

I'm about to take delivery of a '24 BRZ 6MT Sport Tech here in Ottawa and plan on driving it over winter. Two questions: What type of wrap do you have on the front end, and what brand of studded tires did you get? Great video!!

I grew up in New England with rear wheel drive. I spent several years driving my 1970 Chevy Camaro. Probably pretty close to the BRZ in the winter. Never had any problems with snows on the rear and regular on the front although 4 snows would have been better. Winter driving is all about planning ahead. Just don’t forget about the other drivers.
Also grew up in New England and I’ve had a mix of AWD and RWD cars and I prefer RWD. more fun and I sometimes feel like the front end pulls in a funny way on my AWD car (bmw XDrive) which upsets the balance and therefore makes it hard for me to control.
I'm from Michigan 😩. I'm hesitant of buying a RWD. Cause these cars are low and would probably get stuck easily. Could one of you guys correct me if I'm wrong about this.
Back in 1978 Boston had a major blizzard. Over 3’ snow and driving ban for few days. Out of a dozen employees that drove home in it only three of us made it. Most got stuck in snow and had to abandon vehicles. Winter driving is common sense. That 1970 Camaro shouldn’t have made it with just snows on back when full size 4wd Jimmy’s didn’t. I grew up winter driving and use common sense.
Now that I’m in my 60’s I feel better running all wheel drive. When I’m not plowing in my 3/3ton Dodge I have a blast in my Subie WRX!! 😀
@@salmanchaudhry4019 I drive a 17 civic and ive had to replace the skid plate once after going down i75. I wanna say a steep driveway to a gas station started it. I really want this car but kind of concerned as well. Our roads are consistently horrible, even outside of winter.

To fully turn off the stability control, you need to hold both buttons near the shifter. If you only turn off traction control with the left button, abs will still kick in when the car goes sideways
Our parents likely drove 60-80's RWD . It wasn't until the late 70's early 80's when American cars switched to fwd. I worked on a lot of cars through the years with my dad and grandpa. There were no electronic tools like vsa, or traction control, and abs was new. Times just go round and round.

@@TheCarCreative yeah man. It is a blast. I drilled the ice 3 days ago and got 14” in depth. You learn so much car control on the ice. I can’t explain how much fun it is..
Been driving mine like forever with 235,/45/17 winters and it does just fine. You have to be a good driver and know how RWD handles on loose ground. Better than FWD with all seasons.
Im looking at getting a BRZ soon, my only concerns are how good the braking is when it’s decently snowy on the ground, a long with how it handles, im sure leaving TC on and driving leisurely is safe, but the last thing i wanna do is slide thru a traffic light going the speed limit cuz it doesn’t wanna stop😂
@@domenicdilorenzo9694 Braking has nothing to do with which wheel the car drives on. Infact a lighterweight car with proper winter tires will brake and handle better. Main issue with this car is ground clearence and the driver. Get a narrow and higher profile winter tire, and lots of patience self control and you will be better than 99% cars out on the road.

Kind of odd you went with wider tires for your winter set should’ve gone with more narrow tires
The selection for 18inch sport winters was very limited at those sizes. Once I went to 225’s there was heaps of options.
205 to 225 isn’t a huge difference.

I got 205/50/17 winter tires on Fast Switch wheels. Great in snow, but suck on ice. Am thinking of spending the cash to get a set of 225/45/17 in hopes that they will feel more connected.

Yeah it’s fun. But not really practical. I had mustang for daily in Canadian winter (coldest city in canada) and even with blizzak snow tires it was constantly sliding as I turn and try to go straight. Will not buy another rwd for daily anymore

If you haven't done it yet, search for "pedal dance" and you'll see how to turn off even more assists
Dude long press your traction control when you want to screw around. Turn it back on when you don't have at least two lanes worth of room, otherwise you will curb it eventually. Try controlled oversteer at mild speed with plenty of room in snow, then in rain, then on dry pavement with summer tires. Good rule of thumb, if the traction control light comes on unexpectedly, you fucked up and the nanny kicked in. Coilovers and summer tires make these way more fun in that you can firm up the ride and feel more of the road. Don't waste your money on an exhaust until the open flash tablet guys have a good header tune, then throw on a header if you want a little bump in power. Cat-backs are for suckers who just throw money at making it louder.

Keep both hands on the wheel and don’t rest your right hand on the shifter. You’ll end up wearing out the shifter bushings faster because you’re putting more load on them when you hold the shifter like that.

North Dakota GR 86 owner here. Are putting 225 size tires rubbing in the front? Looking for winter/all season tires.
No rubbing at all man. I’ve been using studded winters at 225 and they’ve been great.
You dont need studded tires in areas where they are not legal. They arent legal because the roads are salted often. You do need to wash your car in the cold months frequently and need to spend alot of dollars just on the underbody! or get oil spray

I think it’s call pgytech - great for lighter weight cameras! And it has held my heavier R6 also but I wouldn’t trust it as much.

I have in the past in Northern Alberta with a 1987 Mustang GT Cobra. Driving a 2018 S5 Coupe is child’s play after that… great drifting and practice I do miss rwd only S5 does have a rear bias but still not the same
I've had a couple of RWD cars during winter like E36 and E39. So much fun but it can get unpractical in a snowstorm. Love the new BRZ, the power to weight ratio is very good considering the price and it's brand new!
For winter fun, no substitute for a well sorted front drive. AWD are fun too, but they'd have to be like my 2021 Kona (short wheelbase) with locked differential and traction off. However, I still have a soft spot for those old RWD boats that I grew up with. Back then, no snow tires, but we got around find with the long wheelbase and sandbag in the trunk.
ABS has to do with braking. Not sure what that has to do with the button thing you were talking about

If you keep both hands on the wheel it will be much easier to make steering inputs, the right hand should spend the minimum time at the gear lever. Keep it up!
How does it fair up hills? I live in Seattle, basically a baby version of SF
I’ve done some serious road trips in this car and I still absolutely love it. Haven’t found any issues on hills. Plenty of torque in all gears.

Oh, if you’re at a standstill, if it’s icy, might be sketchy. But I got good winter tires with studs and haven’t gotten stuck yet.
Nah, always had studded. Knowing that there would be issues with a lightweight car I went for studded right away. Insanely fun car in winter conditions if you know how to control a slide 🕺🏻

Can be, where I’m from we get lots of snow, then it gets warm, then really cold again, so lots of ice. Studs helped a lot for me.

I guarantee you that if Toyota made a turbo trim spec level of this car, they would get a lot more sales. I don’t understand what’s keeping them from doing that? I mean they’re making turbo’s Yaris’s and Corolla’s for heavens sake!
Possibly it would get it too close to the Supra? The reality of this car though is that is really is good enough with out a turbo, and having a super responsive naturally aspirated engine is a seriously good time.

Also just wanted a video of someone driving in the snow normally to see if it actually handles well at all, but no use there.
This being my second winter with the BRZ I can confirm it is a great daily, on average roads, winter driver. I’ve even lowered it slightly now and still fine. It handles like you would think as a rear wheel drive light vehicle, but it is a blast to learn car control with it.
@@TheCarCreative I’ve had RWD vehicles in the winter. However they didn’t have traction control or a limited slip diff. I enjoy RWD however and wanted to see if the snow performance was any good. Up here in New England the snow gets heavy and sometimes we get warm temps and freezing the next day getting bad ice. I was looking at either this or the WRX. The BRZ is fun, very fun, the WRX can be too. But in the summer I know the BRZ will perform better. Just not sure how well the BRZ would do in the snow.
@@destruxandexploze2552 We get much the same here. Cold snaps and then really warm temps in Calgary, then ice. Only issue I’ve had this year was going up a hill at a stoplight, it was (I kid you not) pure ice. Studs didn’t get me enough traction to get up from a stop on middle of hill with traffic. Otherwise it’s been flawless in the snow and every other condition. I don’t think even a fwd car would have gotten up the hill I got stopped on though.
Anyone who’s owned a RWD sporty vehicle knows how much fun it is, but at the same time, anyone who also has owned a sporty car that has power knows how fun that is. Unfortunately, the BRZ/FRS/86 lacks the power for me to enjoy the car, despite its RWD platform. I also think it’s handling is highly overrated, but I also own/owned vehicles (both RWD and FWD) that handle much better than it, so my perspective is different.
Is the BRZ/FRS/86 fun? Sure. But only to kids who haven’t owned anything better than it. It’s like the car is made for first time RWD owners, because they get all giggidy by driving it, but believe me when I say, if they’ve owned cars much quicker than it, they would get bored real fast.

Your logic here is sound. I would be curious for you to hop in to the 2022, as I have driven both gen 1 and now own the gen 2, there is a significant difference in how it drives and the power is delivered. Both were fun, but this one does seem more mature. But ultimately, I agree that is a great first car, and for me I'm upgrading from a 2006 honda civic so the jump is significant and does indeed put a smile on my face. Additionally, what I love about this car is how approachable is is mechanically. I am not very savvy in this area so I'm looking forward to learning on a car that doesn't cost an arm and a leg for parts. Well rounded vehicle for any automotive enthusiast, and affordable for your average guy or girl to get into and get a taste of a great road car that could be tracked if you want for minimal upgrades.
Thanks for your input here! Looks like your a VW owner? A car I also really love. Ultimately I'd love to get the new Golf R for a winter driver and keep the BRZ for spirited summer driving.
