    San Francisco International Airport (SFO) has invested over $5 billion to enhance its facilities, aiming to compete with major West Coast hubs like LAX and Seattle-Tacoma. Handling over 50 million passengers annually, SFO was named the top U.S. airport by The Wall Street Journal in 2022. Terminal 1's $2.5 billion upgrade and Terminal 3’s $2.6 billion renovation introduce advanced security, added gates, and eco-friendly features, with completion set for 2027-2028. Known for prioritizing traveler comfort through noise reduction programs and soundproofing, SFO seeks to attract more domestic routes and reduce ticket prices through increased capacity.

    1:45 In normal operations, the short runways (1L and 1R) handle takeoffs, and the long runways (28L and 28R) handle landings. For large planes, common for international flights, the takeoff performance can require using the long runways, as an exception to the above normal plan.

  • @dt.415
    @dt.415 2 місяці тому +17

    The shorter runways aren't specifically for domestic flights and longer ones for international. The shorter runways are for takeoffs and longer runways for landing. 28L and 28R, the longer runways, are standard for arrivals for all aircrafts; Airbus A380s, Boeing 747s, Boeing 737s, and small private jets. The exception is during strong winds where a runway may be used for landing to reduce crosswinds.

    • @RaymondHng
      @RaymondHng 2 місяці тому +1

      Planes always take off by flying into the wind. Taking off into the wind increases the relative airflow over the wings, which helps generate more lift at lower ground speeds. By taking off into the wind, planes need less runway distance to achieve the necessary lift for takeoff. Wind provides better control of the aircraft during the critical phase of takeoff. Since winds usually come in from the west at SFO, most flights take off on 28L and 28R. When it rains, however, the winds usually come in from the south, so plans usually take off on 18L and 19R.

    • @papakuartz
      @papakuartz 2 місяці тому +2

      @@RaymondHng In typical conditions (light winds most of the time, and most of the year) I think more planes take off from 1L and 1R, with larger planes (typically international) using 28L and 28R for takeoff. All landings are on 28L and 28R except when weather conditions (and winds, of course) are unusual.

    SFO’s main problem is the runways are too close together to handle parallel traffic in bad weather. Delays and gate holds are common in the winter. Past attempts to move the runways further apart have stymied, even after generous offers to offset environmental impacts. Landside improvements are great but airside issues will constrain SFO’s future.

    B and C gates are terminal 1. Terminal 2 only has D gates. Terminal 3 is E and F. I worked on the upgraded for all three terminals. You should correct this video to reflect that. In fact, when they were upgrading Terminal 1 (after a very successful upgrade of 2) nearly all of the $2.3b went to upgrading T1 B gates and the C gates only got a mild update. OAK, SJC, and STS are SFO's only regional competition. SMF is only competitive for folks who live in that region; no one from the Bay Area would travel to Sacramento for flights as it would only reduce choice and would effectively limit you to flying Southwest (admittedly, the Southwest faithful do exist, but they're likely to choose OAK). You'd also want to consider buying a lottery ticket if you can get to SMF within two hours because that would be an amazing day indeed.
