64 Corvette Stingray Hard Run Christmas Day

- 64 Corvette. A little test and tune shenanigans on Christmas Day. Diagnosis on engine symptoms was valve spring issues - - breaking up at higher rpms from valve float. Changed to stronger valve springs after this run, as the ones that came with the AFR heads just weren't up to the task.

Ear Candy! I Love every second of this!
Legendary stuff here, man! Nice to see someone enjoying their ride and sharing the sound of a V8 with the rest of the world. Keep it up
I show your videos to the Car guys in the 15 -30 year old range. They ask what is so great about those old cars? Once they experience seeing, no traction control, light weight, big power, No ABS, No seat belts if you choose, Big Noise, it finally dawns on them how visceral the older cars are and the amount you have to personally interact with the car to drive it. and of course the pleasure it gives back to you for your efforts.
It sets the hook in them really deep. Their problem beyond this is no many can pony up the $$$$ to get one of these. I help them get into something that will bring much of this flavor to them without breaking the bank.
Post as many as you can, these bring me back to my high school days, and gets me up and running on my current projects.
Thanks for posting, these are the reasons American Cars have the charm the European cars can't touch.
Nice to see someone driving a Vette - not just looking at it or talking about how much they are worth. This Video and King of the Hill with Dennis Hopper inspire me...
Love the scenes in that movie - sealed the deal for me wanting one way back then 😊
@@wilsonbeckett9487 I second that motion
Wilson, man music to my ears . I've owned 13 corvettes, and am itching to again. My first a split window i bought in Miami January 1972 $1300.. ! And on I'm thinking Resto mod with roadster shop chassis and my favorite 67 coupe .
Loved your video
Do it!! Life is short 😊
Man, did I need this today. What a great ride.
That's how you're supposed to drive if you ask me.
james22894 A woman pulled a u-turn on a double yellow line on a blind curve and took me out in 2006 - she was issued two citations and found at fault. I took the insurance money and rebuilt it myself, and bought my wife a car with the paint money, lol. Does that count as I wrecked it? 😇
Very impressive driving, hope this guy is OK
42 years of doing this - I’m always ok 🤪
Glad to see that I'm not the only one who enjoys a little Christmas Day Christmas Cheer Driveabout!
This guy knows out to drive his car, when the back end gets loose he let's off or drive into it not like these young punks into their New Mustangs when the back in goes around they panic+shit their pants!! I drive my 2016 Z06 in the same matter w/all the drivers aid off!! Love the sound+fury of your 64!!
That sounds real good, what they should sound like!
Nice vette need new video's saw it 50 times have a nice day😂
355ci (rebuilt ZZ4 short block), AFR 195's, 10:1, custom Comp hyd roller 230/236 dur, 110, and 530's/540's lift. Carbs are 450's for crisp throttle response - but must re-jet, upsize squirters, add 50cc accell pumps, and run lots of initial timing for the tunnel ram - 20 degrees (36 total). TKO 600 5 spd, 3:55 rear with 295/50/15's on 12" rims. Currently changing to short travel lifters and stronger valve springs - beehive this time, and an aluminum flywheel. There are 3 other videos as well.
I haven't driven like that since 2012, when I sold my my 1980 Triumph TR8 after owning it for 23 years. It had an aluminum 3.5 liter V-8 with a Holley 390cfm 4bbl. I'd done all the "overbuilding" mods to it so you could whip it hard as you are doing and it wouldn't break. Same 5spd manual that went in the ton-heavier Range Rover. Not the raw power you have but in a 85" wheelbase 2400 lb car it was plenty. I don't think people understand the finesse it takes in the application of power, steering, brakes, and clutch to drive a car that way. They just think _Oh look what a powerful car allows him to do._ Not realizing it's 98% the diver, and 2% the car.
Matt from Florida. Yep - everyone thinks this car is a big block, lol.. But it's just 355ci and maybe 500 hp - the 2,900lbs helps though 👍
You need to do a walk around of the car. Can't get enough of these videos!!!! @Wilson Beckett
Glorious Madness ❤😮😊
Good driving
Beautiful car, nice driving, reminds me of when I had my LS1 Z28, I really miss just driving around quiet roads, spinning and doing my thing. Thanks for the cool vid!
Nice driving bud. I'm infatuated with that beast of a vette
what a great view , thanks for sharing
You can drive. That's for sure...car sounds awesome
glad to see you drive it!
I've put over 120,000 miles on it since 1999. :)
Holy shit....pushing it to the edge! Love it! Nice driving. That things a street animal, lol
That is mighty fine sounding.
Yes you hit the nail on the head with the intial timing so high. I need a better distributor to dial back the mechanical advance. you can do it with mine- its a Unilite- but you have to take off alot of pats to do it.... I may just try for grinns and giggles.... wont hurt and save a couple bucks... Thanks for your imput it was very helpful....
Paul M
BTW what a beautiful way to spend christmas day !
You da man Wilson. When I was a teenager I could get all four wheels off the ground. Now that I'm older I've had too many run-ins with belligerent cops and don't want to hit critters much less kids. So I'll just watch this stuff on UA-cam..
Michael Conrad , that's one of the good things about having these videos - Sometimes I can watch them in place of actually taking a run 👍
I love this car. My modded C5Z wants to grow up and be thus car :)
Yeah would have been a shitty day if someone was in the other lane or pulled out a driveway, yeah keep trucking!!!
You can see all that kinda stuff better in reality, than it looks in the video 👍
The best way to drive through a roundabout-put that puppy into a tail slide and drift through it.
I thought I was the only one that drove like this on Christmas!! Lol
Not too many people out 👍👍
Nice driving. Engine sounds healthy. My '64 is also an animal. See my video Racetrack Shakedown In '64 Stingray 1st Practice Run for some more realistic demonstration.
Am I the only that that googled where this fun park was??? LOL
Office parks turn into play zones on the weekend.
Smiling from Ear to ear i am.
Thanks for the ride... You must really hate those back tires by the way you treat them!
nah... it was December... hate to see them catch a chill :)
No way in Hell would I get in that car with you? I live in a rural area, but damned if you could go that far without seeing a cop. Love that car man...
I've heard that for over 30 years... but then everybody still gets in, lol. Passengers never get an all out ride anyway - just not worth the risk.
Happy to see the car again.Went back last fall and saw your video's removed, first thought was OO NO,worst case. Please repost the video with the Seether music so people can see how good the car really looks. Our 64 has been in the barn for 25+years.My American's are 15x10.5 and 15x8.5 CP 200S off an old road car.
The Best - i will be back !!!
Why would you come back? The guy has a C2 Corvette and called it a Stingray. Anybody that calls a C2 a Stingray is a goof. The C2 was a Sting Ray, not a Stingray. All C2 Corvettes were Sting Rays from 63 to 67. The first C3 in 68 was not a Sting Ray or Stingray, and from 69 to 76 all C3 Corvettes were Stingrays, and from 77 to 2013 no Corvettes were Stingrays. So all C2 Corvettes were Sting Rays, 8 models of the C3 were Stingrays, and all C7 and C8 models are Stingrays. There are no C1, C4, C5 or C6 Stingrays. Nonetheless, it is disrespectful in the Corvette world to call a C2 a Stingray instead of a Sting Ray. The rear top on all C2 Corvettes clearly says three words 'Corvette Sting Ray'.
I gotta do some more vids. I drive it a few days a week these days, but too busy to set the camera up
Don't know engine has in it , but it sounds really good
Awesome!
Have a hard time believing that's a modded ZZ4 with 3:55's, bet those rear tires feel the same. My first impression was monster BB! This car haunts my dreams...
I hear ya - the rpm's sound lower on video which makes it seem more like a BB - it's winding to 6,300-6,500, but sounds more like 5-5,500 - might be the side pipes/gopro combination.
nice!
Merry Christmas?? Merry Christmas ...indeed! Humbug!!
Post some more like this
Just added a 1980 Z28 barn find to the collection.Guess the 64roadster got pushed back again,LOL. There are 6 rare optioned 1st Gen Camaro's that we still got to finish first.CK me back sometime and we can figure out a way I can get you pic's of all this Ohio muscle.Come to the Cars and Parts Meet's in Springfield.Pease Dude!
nice tail lights
well if you get tired of the car and your kids don't want it let me know, I would love to get crazy in it for a while....
Oh I never get tired of it. 😊
That 1 dislike gotta be Karen ! This car is crazy🙌
what size is the engine. compretion, cam specs, rear end gears, and carb size....This thing sounds mint...I love it... sounds like it has awesome throttle responce
That's cool, I hate people who show off for passengers. Got accused of that in the mid 80's in a late C3 but I knew where the tires would break and it had nowhere near the ponies you have...
yea, the passenger seat sucks no matter who you are and no matter who's driving, lol
If you own a 'vette and dont drive it like this every once in a while(on an empty backroad at least) shame on YOU
Team Malone Absolutely!! I've owned it for 19 years, personally put over 130,000 miles on it, totaled it once and completely rebuilt it myself - every nut and bolt, fiberglass work etc. I enjoy the hell out of this car. It's what it is for. Have a great day!
COOL SHIT
Why would anyone NOT want a manual transmission???
The engine sounds fantastic 👍I luv the run says that you got the balls to turn it on and let her rip.... nice !!! BTW Merry Christmas..... lol
Oh yeah...............
How many timesh ave you wrecked your vette?
every time i watch this i wonder how much gas the vette drinks with you pumping the pedal down all the time
I basically only put in as much gas as I think I’m gonna use that day, to keep the octane rating at max, and 5 gallons usually covers it🤷♂️
so what has become of this corvette, most of these videos are from a few years back, whats it look like now?
About the same, but it’s no longer 355ci, and is a 402. I may paint it some day, but can’t really afford to, and just been too busy to do it myself 😊
Trying to get my '64 to handle better. Keep getting smoked in the twisties by the old 911's. What suspension setup are you running?
Best easy combo for stock frame is front coils cut 1/2 coil off top 1/2 coil off bottom, 1.25” front sway bar, 7/8” rear, as much neg caster as you can get on front alignment, a hair more camber than stock, use power steering holes in front spindles for steering arms with no power steering for a quicker ratio. Need all new parts in drum brake system. That’s what I ran for almost 90,000 miles until the car got totaled. Now it’s a custom tube frame with C4 suspension, brakes, steering. For years I did a lot of accidental 4-wheel drifting when playing with modern cars because my drum brakes would be so gone from overheating - sliding sideways does slow you down 😂
Now there are a lot of options for front control arms that get you better geometry, etc. I have coil overs but really miss the stock springs on public roads - actually need as much suspension travel as possible, and you loose a lot with most coil overs. I’m still not happy with my spring rates, and only have single adjustable shocks - double adjustable would be sooo much better.
@@wilsonbeckett9487 Thanks so much Wilson, I like the sound of that setup and pretty cheap as well. Currently have bilsten sports on the car but I've been looking at the QA1 adjustables. Also considering swapping the front drums to discs as I've been unable to get them to stop pulling. New wheel cylinders and liners but tries to run me into oncoming traffic on a regular basis.
@@wilsonbeckett9487 forgot to ask, did the drums play any part in the car getting totaled?
@@DonLemelin a Toyota Corolla that got tired of waiting in traffic, made a U-turn on a double yellow line blind curve. I was doing 100 when I saw her, left about 12 feet of rubber as I went thru her trunk with the right front corner of my car - spun her into the ditch, while my left rear totaled the front end of a BMW sport Ute - completed three rotations before stopping. Race belts kept me in it. Front control arm broke fuel pump, and car caught fire - put it out with small extinguisher I carried. No injuries to anyone. Not sure discs would have helped. Discs move your wheels outward 1/2”, so keep that in mind. I ran 235/60’s on 7” AR TT’s up front that would NOT have fit after adding discs - I had already cut/found the inner lip on the front fenders. 245’s in rear.
is it a 4 speed or 5 speed transmission?
TKO 5 spd with a 3.55 rear 😊
is that a Roadster..??
Yes - check the other videos on my channel 😊
Word on the street was he got lost on his way to trade it in on a Tesla...
I know this video is nearly 11 years old, but perhaps you'll see this comment, which is really a question, What transmission and rear gear do you have in this Corvette?
Tremec TKO 5 speed, and 3.55 rear gears, 295/50/15’s on 12” wide rims 😁
Dude, you drive your shit like it should be.......
Well there's 6:49 of my life I'll never get back.
Sry i wasnt meaning it toward you. (you obviously enjoy yours) i was referring to the people who dont ever do this with theirs its kinda sad
I figured that out a little late, lol.... changed the wording of my response :)
Old video need new material!
