Is the Humble Lamb HIStory Still Worth Having?

  • The Humble Lamb HIStory Bible (NASB 2020) is exactly what you would expect from them. Innovative. Unique. Beautiful. I can’t say that I’ve ever seen a bible laid out like this. It is designed to be read in stories. The chapter numbers are diminished on the side of the page to take the focus off of reading chapters and verses. Instead, each story is introduced with a beautiful full color drop cap, and violet subheading. I tried to include as many as I could in these photos, but each one has its own custom artwork. Truly incredible.
The fore-edge gilding is a wonder in and of itself. It features art from stories in the Old Testament, with Jesus in the center, and then artwork from the New Testament. Humble Lamb does the best page edge work in the book publishing world, and I’ve seen lots of books. The purple (aka amethyst) Meritian Goatskin cover has more of a shine than previous releases, and it makes that grain POP! Same with the liner, which for this edition looks virtually identical to the lunar yellow (liner is also the Meritian Goatskin with same shine and grain).
As you can see in the pictures, this bible is thick, but compact (7 x 4.75 x 1.75 inches). This makes the fact that they have all 220 of Doré art illustrations and the full set of NASB 2020 references and translator notes (on the outer column) even more impressive. One thing to keep in mind about the references is when there are too many, they are wrapped around the bottom of the story. This is to keep all the references together with the story (as much as possible). It’s hard to believe they are able to do all this AND give us an 8.5 Milo font. The paper is 32gsm Ivory, and the text is line matched.
I’ve seen a few say the Words of Christ are in black instead of blue as advertised. Actually they are more of a violet. The color a little harder to see than the last edition, but not as hard to see as earlier editions. I’m not sure if this was intentional, but since the subheadings to the stories are in violet, it makes sense that the words of Christ would match. Intentional or not, it’s a feature I actually like. Just different enough from the black to see when Jesus is speaking, but plenty dark to avoid making them difficult to read.
While the layout does take some getting used to, it’s really nice that it forces you to slow down and take in the incredible stories of the Bible that all point to Jesus (a theme also very prominent in the custom drop caps). Everything about this bible screams “Jesus is the center” from the arrangement, to the drop caps, to the fore-edge. It’s not just a bible, it’s a total experience designed to immerse you in the story of the salvation of man in the person of Jesus.
One thing that may be important to note is that all of the HIStory editions are edge-lined. There are at this time no paste-off options. However, if you want regular color under gold gilding that’s available as a second option. I also noticed there are no black (or green) editions of HIStory available. Lots to take in with this bible, but it’s a clever design, and an innovative concept.
Check the link below to look at the color options!

There are printing literally errors from cover to cover. No use saying that they would be fixed next printing. Are you sending new Bibles out to those who bought the first ones or refunding them?
You as a so called Christian company can’t even be bothered to reply to emails and when you have previously you just fobbed me off.

I am really impressed by Humble Lamb Bibles. Differently to most Bible publishers, they have been successful in creating a very distinctive elegant style, which, in my opinion, makes them the only real competition to Schuyler Bibles. About the mistakes, I believe that that is part of the unique experience of having a first edition (those 'details' may even make it more special over time).

Hi Tim! I bought the NASB Humble Lamb HIStory Bible in the Fox Orange & I absolutely love it, despite the few errors.
I think of it as a collector’s item because it is the first edition & it has the mistakes.
It’s a work of art. I love everything about it. The color on the cover, the Fore-edge with the beautiful artwork, the single column which is my favorite layout, the drop caps are gorgeous, I just wish the blue words of Christ were darker & more vivid. And I love the compact size. It’s so cute!
This is my very first Humble Lamb Bible, & I’m so happy I bought it. Thanks for your wonderful review as always! God bless you and Happy Birthday again Tim!! Enjoy! 🎂🍰🎉🎁🎊🙏🏻📖💜😊

Sometimes these things just happen. As long as the inspired words are all there, no problem. One of my favorite bibles, 1972 Nelson KJV, has a text error in 2 Chronicles 23:18, the second "with" is spelled "wit" on page 543.

This is truly an art piece which could rest on a coffee table. I love my daily Bible which is well used but miss the art, design and reverent feeling that hand lettered medieval manuscripts displayed. The History Humble Lamb captures some of the artistic beauty of the past and magnifies the “Holy” aspect of Holy Scripture. It must be stunning when viewed in person.

At times I use my Bible app audio CEV translation to get a better understanding of certain long passages and stories . I keep hearing about all the mistakes in the NASB HIStory Bible, but they don't seem like that big a deal to me, as long as there aren't any textual mistakes. I would probably still buy one, if I could afford it, which, unfortunately, I can't. It is defintely a unique looking bible, with its small, chunky size. One thing's for sure, if you ever lay it down and forget where you put it, it shouldn't be that hard to find, especially if you get an orange or yellow edition. You don't see very many orange or yellow bibles.

If they had been told and those errors were an issue for them, they could have made an informed decision. I know these types of mistakes are important for some folks and not for others. Humble Lamb's Bible's are very special. They do an amazing job. Mistakes will happen. The mistakes you mention are not in the scripture, so it's not that important. I purchased the NKJV Amethyst Goatskin Shepherd based on your and Tim Wildsmith's reviews. Gorgeous. I would love to get the HisStory, but I am not happy with the NASB 20 translation for many reasons. I prefer the LSB, Legacy Standard Bible translation. Hope that Humble Lamb does a Bible with that translation.

Thanks for another great review. Appreciate your labors. I'm a little surprised HL chose the NASB for a translation on this one. There must be more NASB readers than I realize. It's certainly a unique layout. At that price point I wonder if they'll get enough interest. Seems like a better fit for the ESV, but I'm sure it's not easy acquiring permissions to print.

Two corrections: It has 217 Dore' photos, and the "blue" words of Christ are way too understated, my eyes cannot discern the color difference. That fact is the most major flaw in my opinion. Also, if you supported Humble Lamb as part of their Kickstarter campaign, you have no way to return your Bible if you are dissatisfied. Along with the numerous mistakes, I am definitely not happy with my purchase, or Humble Lamb.

As someone who has had this Bible for a month, let me say that there are plenty of issues with this Bible. I am still breaking it in, but construction-wise, the Bible is not as quality in its finishings as Schuyler. There are huge issues that I am surprised more people aren't noting.
First, the Bible is both too small and too thick. It is a "reader's Bible", which in my opinion, is something that I sit down with on the couch or a comfortable chair and read at length. A "reader's Bible" is not a travel Bible -- something that one takes to church every Sunday. The dimensions should not be so small. That makes it too thick, which makes me worry about how well the spine will hold up. For example, when I sit down with my Trevaris, I can literally fold the cover back on itself, which makes it more wieldy than the Humble Lamb History because probably becomes as small as the HL when folded back (yet, maybe the HL will change as it breaks in).
Two, a "reader's Bible" should have a simple layout. I love the Dore artwork, but it does not fit in a reader's Bible. Moreover, the decision to add the Dore artwork to such a small Bible is strange. Dore's woodcuts are hard to appreciate when they are so small and it adds thickness to the Bible. This is why the Bible needs much larger dimensions.
Three, the NASB is a poor choice for a reader's bible. There are far too many cross-references and footnotes. I don't mean that in general, but for a Bible that is supposed to enhance the reading experience, the notes themselves and the markers in the text are far too distracting. The NASB does not lend itself well to the removal of these markers and notes.
Four, the text is too small for it to be enjoyable to read. It is fine for a travel Bible or a church Bible, but that is not how it is marketed. it is marketed to be story-centric, the idea of which I really like. But that is not the point, or the strength of such a small Bible. A larger thinner Bible with 10 point font would be much better suited.
With that said, it is a really cool Bible. Unfortunately not something that is going to get that much reading time because of these drawbacks, but I admire the ambition and will definitely consider buying another HL in the future if the price is right (like it was during the KS campaign). And I really hope this inspires other Bible makers to be more creative, for which I laud HL.

To me, the duplication of the images is the "worst" printing error as it was touted to include all the Dore images. For me, if they would have offered to print the missing images on a nice matte cardstock and sent to the buyer it would have helped to mitigate much of the outrage. I recognize the expense required for this endeavor, but think it would have helped their customer service image.

It isn’t about where they are made, it’s about how many are made. There are several Humble Lambs already very collectible.

It's still the whole Bible right? Just with headings to carve out the stories? You can still look up chapter/verse etc..? In other words it's not a paraphrase but an actual version?

Tim, I wish I knew how !! I don't use modern apps, the only reason I use YT is for content because I don't have cable, satellite or internet service where I live. I did find your page on FB but I dont have "messenger" set up. But like I said, I have the Eggplant with the mustard liner and the Blue with the English tan liner (still wrapped up in the box, unopened. But trust me, that edge line ink is definitely black and I doubt I could tak a picture to show it was anything but black, even if it were a different color It would still sow black in my non studios set up!!! If I figure a way to get you pics I will.

Hi there, will you check and see "2 Samuel 21:19," does it say the following... "19 And there was war with the Philistines again at Gob, and Elhanan the son of Jaare-oregim the Bethlehemite killed Goliath the Gittite, the shaft of whose spear was like a weaver’s beam." If so, then it's not correct.

@@anickelsworthbiblereviews: I like NASB translation, but if 2 Samuel 21:19 in the NASB 2020 says that Goliath was killed by Jaare-oregim then it’s incorrect. Goliath was killed by David. So, the words “brother of” should have been placed before Goliath. We must all be very careful with these new age translations.

    • @anickelsworthbiblereviews
      @anickelsworthbiblereviews  11 місяців тому

@theworldtomorrow3960 however, that rendering is presumptuous. The words “the brother of” are supplied words. Even the KJV has them italicized. Like it or not, the 2020 has the more literal approach.

@@anickelsworthbiblereviews: I understand sir, but the KJV translators understood the preceding definite article, the historical facts and the thought of the sentence from the original texts when translating, there was a solid and accurate reason for the madness for the KJV translators to do that. I’ve nothing against NASB, in fact I have two NASB Life Application Bibles, all I’m saying is that a phrase or a sentence in the Bible, if not translated correctly, can have serious consequences. We all must be very careful with other translations. Blessings.

There are printing errors literally from cover to cover. No use saying that they would be fixed next printing. Are you sending new Bibles out to those who bought the first ones or refunding them?
You as a so called Christian company can’t even be bothered to reply to emails and when you have previously you just fobbed me off.

Love you brother Tim, respect you and everything you do for the Saints. I knew you would chime in because you appreciate your viewers. I collect bibles, in particular high end bibles. I count on you, Randy and Wildsmith to point things out to me when I consider a purchase. Looking at my collection, I estimate I have purchased 5 or 6 ultra premium bibles only because your impressions. I have been watching the HIStory launch very carefully and it is clear that nobody wants to point out the flaws, which are many. Go back and look at Wildsmiths' review and evaluate his response. I see many people returning this edition upon delivery because Humble Lamb never disclosed the typos and errors, I would be very upset. There is a certain amount of Caveat emptor, that's why I passed on this one. I do have the Schuyler ESV Stridon on pre-order. Maybe I could blame Wildsmith for that one as well (just kidding).
