Runner Who Killed Mountain Lion With Bare Hands Describes How He Survived

- EDITOR'S NOTE: Previous news releases had listed the mountain lion that attacked Kauffman as being in the 80-100 pound range. The recently-released necropsy on the cub determined it to be 25-30 pounds.

Travis Kauffman was on a run near Fort Collins, Colorado when he was attacked by a mountain lion. He survived a 10-minute struggle with the big cat.

I knew with two pretty good blows to the back of the head that it didn’t release that I was probably going to have to do something a little more drastic.
About a quarter mile into that run, hearing some pine needles rustle, a stick break and I turned around and just was pretty bummed out to see a mountain lion chasing after me.
The mountain lion weighed around 100 pounds.
It just kind of kept running and lunged at me, it was going toward my face so I threw up my hands to sort of block my face, at which point it grabbed onto my hand and wrist. From there, it started to claw at my face and neck and that’s when kind of my fear response turned into a fight response.
There was a point where I was concerned I wasn’t going to make it out of it.
I think it might have been a mix of me tussling with the cat and it still clawing at me and thinking about another cat potentially coming along.
It got a claw in my lip. I tried to throw it off me at that point and we took a little tumble down the south side of the trail. Down there, just kind of had a little wrestling match, at which point I was able to get on top of it, pin its back legs so I didn’t get any soft tissue scratched out in my nether regions.
I was grabbing around for sticks, I only had my left hand free. My right hand was still locked in its jaws. Tried to get at its neck to see if I could stab it in the neck to get it to release. That wasn’t working, the sticks were breaking, so then I picked up a rock that I’d seen kind of near us. It was pretty heavy and it was kind of hard to wield and I tried to give it a few bashes in the back of the head but unfortunately I had a tough time swinging it with my arm still locked into the cat’s jaws.
I stepped on its neck with my right foot and just slowly, after a few minutes, I thought I’d be getting close and then it’d start thrashing again, I have a few more scratches as a result of from those thrashes at that point. I’d say another couple minutes later it stopped moving. Jaws opened and I was able to kind of scramble back up the hill and get the heck out of dodge.
In my mind, I’ve replayed it, it seems like a long time but I’m thinking 10 minutes at most.

Running with anything but empty pockets kinds sucks. When I run around my block I wear a 3" fixed blade on a necklace and an arm band for my phone. A gun is simply to bulky to run with. However when hiking around my cabin I do have my P220 Match Elite 10mm on me. Too many bears and coyotes.

Also the estimated weight was around 70-80lbs. It was 35lbs when they found it because it was also partially eaten after it died

I hate that the animal had to die, but he had little choice. Cats have an extremely high pain tolerance. So, you cant deter them that way.
I can't say that I would have done anything less than fight for my life just like he did.

I'll wager it's mother died before teaching it how to hunt. Also, incidents like this will be more frequent as man encroaches more and more into their territory.
Big cats tend not to attack people unless they are unable to catch their preferred prey. I don't belong to or agree with PETA. I'm saddened when a wild animal must die because of our presence and actions within their home.

My dads seventy years old, and literally grew up in a hut in Somalia. So seeing lions from a distance was completely normal (never mind hyenas whom he used to walk past), But when he was sixteen, he was going to his moms house, there were no lights so he was using his memory and possibly the stars. So on his way, just as he was about to take a step, he realised that he was about to step on something, so he moved back, and the thing got up And the things skin had a light glow, my dad who was also a soldier said this moment was the scariest of his life as he realised that a lion is right in front of him! He instinctively grabbed a rock, and he felt and saw 2 more walk past him! So he ran,( and my dad was infamously known for his speed!), he looked back and they weren’t there, so he realises he could die, because it’s known that lions go round and come in front of the person, but thankfully he found a few people from his tribe, and told them the what just happened, and they started laughing and said now you know true fear, and this calmed him down a bit!

A cat that size would easily kill most of us, 1v1, no weapon. They're pure strength and ferocity. Imagine those claws ripping giant gashes into your flesh.
Including myself in that 1v1. The best you could do would be to keep your throat tucked away and hope it didn't latch onto your neck or head in anyway with its paws or mouth. It incapacitating in one of your limbs means game over, too.

I have never been attacked by an animal before and knowing it is one that literally wants to kill me by biting, scratching, pouncing on me would leave me horrified but not defenseless of course. Fully grown man versus a 30 pound cub still leaves the human the advantage even if it snuck up on him.

The question that has not been ask is why the cat attacked the runner? Maybe he got intentionally a little to close? Are the food sources depleted for this young cat? Generally young cubs stay with their mothers for up to two years and by then would be all most full grown. The cat was too small to out on its own. Something is not adding up with this story.

Does it matter if it was a cub or not? It was a lion that it's mother had pushed out on it own, it was old enough to fend for it's self and hunt, don't detract from what dude did asshole. He got attacked by a damn mountain lion and killed it with his bare hands so yeah, he fought for his life and didn't fold up and become a meal. It weighed around 50 pounds so that's literally a full grown female or a half grown male and he's lucky it didn't gut him and eat his ass. What would you have done besides ball up and die? I'd imagine nothing but get eaten.

The cub weighed a mere 35-40 pounds and was 4-5 months old. There was something odd about his story, and now it's clear. He killed a inexperienced cub. Didn't it sound off that the cub latched onto his wrist? Obviously a sign of a inexperienced Mountain lion. Mountain lion moms don't push away their cubs at 4-5 months old. The cubs stay with their mother for nearly 2 years.

good reason to carry a knife at minimum.. In the midwest we carry pistols in out hikes.. I meet an incredible girl recently in her late 20's from Montana and she says she hikes never worries about bears and has never seen a cougar.. Im not that lucky so I think the sidearm is a minimum. I would never kill an animal unless it was trying to eat me or simply out of food for necessity.

Just because they instinctively chase a person doesn't mean they would never attack one. It's rare, but it happens. I live in Colorado and know people who've been attacked, and some who've just been followed out of curiosity. There's no "never" or "always" with these animals.
