The one thing about Maiden to keep in mind is that they've been performing live at this level for over 40 years now and never ever take a night off. Every show is 100% effort and energy from the first minute to the last, whether they're at MSG or in Sioux Falls. Really incredible to see what they've accomplished. The only band ever to get to this level in the absence of any radio airplay, MTV exposure, etc.
Iron Maiden is considered by endless people to be the worlds greatest live band.
A live Maiden isnt just a show, its an experience.. I have sen them 17 times and they always kill it.
Maiden a top 5 band for me, but Rush is best live band IMO. Have seen both live many, many times. Both great, but Rush gets the edge. Seen Rush live 30 times:)

The song is from a very famous work of literature which almost everyone in western civilization knew. The Rime of the Ancient Mariner, poem in seven parts by Samuel Taylor Coleridge that first appeared in Lyrical Ballads, published collaboratively by Coleridge and William Wordsworth in 1798. Highly studied and used to be taught to everyone who ever went to a school. It was common knowledge.

We studied that in our school (in India) in 10th grade. Loved that and is still one of my favorites.

Lead singer, Bruce Dickinson, is a licensed commercial pilot. He was piloting the Iron Maiden jet at the start of the video.
An Iron Maiden show is one of the best things you will ever see in your life. They're are so many great songs to choose from, "The Clansman" live from Rock in Rio, "The Sign of the Cross", "Dream of Mirrors" or just about any song from the same show, it was a brilliant show, as you can see by the songs all being from the same show, "Dance of Death" or "Paschendale" from "Death on the Road" concert, Iron maiden is my religion and Steve harris is my God. Up the Irons.

The Rime of the Ancient Mariner is from a poem of the same name, epic poem, by Samuel Taylor Coleridge. Rime in this case is a bit of a joke by Coleridge. A rhyme can be an alternative name for poem. In this instance rime, used in relation to an ancient mariner, would refer to the salt dried on his skin

Having grown up with this band, I have listened to all song's, there are so many . As a fan I have not come across a bad song. To me they have so many for all tastes. One absolute banger you might want to check out is children of the damned, studio version, try with lyrics it will make your skin crawl. And again it is one of my favs, hope you get into them more as I have done, enjoy.
I'am a life time Iron Maiden fan and I see a lot of reactions like you, from Rap/Hiphop fans to classic composers or singers. I heard the name, know the shirts but not the music, how is that possible. I've seen them Live many times and they never dissapoint you. They actually start off this weekend their new tour an I'am going to see them live in July in Amsterdam. Other great songs are Hallowed be thy name live version 1982, the voice of Bruce here is insane, a must see. The Clansman and Sign of the Cross from Rock in Rio 2000 and so many others so a lot to discover. I prefer always their live versions because it gives a extra dimension. Bruce is a living legend, not only one of the best metalsingers, he is also a pilot who flies Boeing aeroplanes and a great fencer, he almost reached the Olympics with Great Britain. Beside that he has his own company wirh flyparts and also developed the brand Trooper, Iron Maidens own beer. Greetz from Erwin, Utrecht, The Netherlands.
Iron Maiden was a medieval torture device, Aluminium Osvert is a modern day torture device.
This 2008 tour was the first time they'd played this song live since 1984... 24 years... Bruce Dickinson (lead singer) and Adrian Smith (guitarist with the headband) were out of the band for most of the 1990s. Janick Gers (blonde guitarist) had never played this song with the band before this tour, having joined in the early 1990s.
And they absolutely kill this 13+ minute long epic.
The Egyptian stuff is because this song is from the album Powerslave which has a ton of references to Ancient Egypt particularly the title track.

When this was first released on LP, it was unusual to get even 25 minutes on a side, so this was over half of side 2 of the Powerslave album (which had an egyptian theme, hence the stage dressing).

The area from the slow part into the solos still sends chills down my spine, amazing piece of work. The whole powerslave album is a masterpiece. I have been a fan since their start, and I remember the powerslave tour concert I went to like it was yesterday.

Always love seeing people enjoy this performance! To stick with the Nas/Jay Z/hip hop analogy, leaving Iron Maiden off any historical heavy metal GOAT list would be considered an extremely hot take. The guitarists are legends and held very high regard (the two originals in particular; the more over-the-top showman, Janick Gers, has/had a few detractors partly because he's a tad more inconsistent than his predecessors in live performances, but mainly because a small subset of metalheads get real upset when guitarists dare clown around on stage), but bass player and band leader Steve Harris is probably the most likely to land a top 1-3 spot on an all-time "best metal [player of instrument]" list. Lots of people have Murray and Smith as their favorite guitarists and Nicko as their favorite drummer, though--they're all about as respected as they come!

May I suggest.. The trooper.. aces high.. flight of Icarus.. Revelations.. hallowed be thy name.. wasted years.. Alexander the Great.. I recommend and suggest that you listen to the live versions studio versions are okay but they are an excellent live playing band and have been together for 40 years or so.. I recommend watching the documentary flight 666 if you really want to know more about them
These guys are considerd amongst if not the greates Heavy Metal band of all time. Should give 'Hallowed Be Thy Name' (Hamesmith 83 version) a go. It's considered amogst the greatest from this band.

This is a great song but, you really should watch the 1985 version live at Long Beach Arena, on the World Slavery Tour when they were young. In my opinion Bruce's voice was better suited for this song back then.

Just came across this channel. I love Iron Maiden playing live they are amazing. I think you would love "Xanadu" (live) by a band called Rush...... you have a new sub.
Maiden are all in their late 60s now they are incredible and are currently on a tour again, other Maiden songs to React too are Hallowed be thy name, The Trooper, Seventh son of a seventh son, The Clansmen.
Drummer Nico is now 70 years old
I listened to all these heavy metal guys when I was young, but the only ones I still return to, after all these years, are Iron Maiden and Dio. I challenge you to read this whole epic poem and get through it without weeping.

A lot of maiden songs are history lessons. This song is based off an old poem.
IMO Iron Maiden are the best metal band of all time. You need to check out their live version of Hallowed be thy Name - the Flight 666 version is the best. Also try The Red and the Black live version (from The Book of Souls Live Chapter) which I consider to be their best solo - or should I say 5 continuous solos! Finally, try out Empire of the Clouds for yet another marathon track, which tells the story of the R101 airship disaster - no decent live version on UA-cam for that one though, but maybe try the lyric version so you can follow the story.
I love the Flight 666 version, but both the Rock in Rio and the Hammersmith version are so much more insane.

If you're not careful you're going to get a proper education and be a philosopher well educated listening to iron Maiden if you haven't noticed yet they do a lot of history stuff a lot of mythology so on and so forth

Yeah, music is the main thing with Maiden, they are all important, and none of them are just a bonus or extra! And yeah, the singer is very great, but the musicians are very very great at the same level or more! Not like most of the bands, which are just one man show and the rest are pathetically and disgustingly extras!!!!!
