Definitely needs pontiac wheels, the rally wheels are all I had at the time, looked way better than the iroc wheels that came on the car when we bought
Mike, talk about grenading a motor, holy cow ! That thing was hit !! No way I'd trust that crank either, yard art ! Better yet make a Pontiac robot outside the garage as a memorial 🤣🤣 Nice ride even thou its NOT a classic MUSTANG 👍 It looks really clean too.
Yeah it was pretty bad, shocked the block didn't get windowed or anything. Could probably sleeve the back two cylinders and make it work. I plan on using bad cranks and cam shafts for a railing idea in the future.
Took my 69 Firebird from El Paso to Germany, later back to Louisiana. Did the same Chevy wheels, got lots of "those aren't Pontiac wheels"comments. Work with what you have or can get sometimes.
Wow! That's awesome you brought it with you everywhere! Hope you have some photos of it in every place! Yeah I've already received a ton of those comments here as if I didn't know what the wheels are... didn't have any pontiac wheels at the time and the wheels that were on the car before were terrible... so I did exactly what you mentioned above and worked with what I had! Thanks for watching! Cheers Mike
I love the Reverse Image Television Technology used for the sit down monologue. Glad you are well my friend. Best wishes to you and all ❤️ Stay safe everyone ✌️😎
Nice Firebird! You need to get those Chevy Rally wheels off of it though, Other than that it's really nice, Pontiac engines in the 60's and early 70's had a plastic toothed timing gear on the cam and at 50 to 80,000 miles the plastic teeth would grind up and chip off and they would spin the timing chain, A lot of guys would replace the timing chain and gears and wouldn't at least clean the pan and pump screen out and then the engine would slowly starve for oil! I Bought a lot of Pontiacs in the 70'S with spun timing chains that people were going to junk and had them running the next day with a new timing chain and gears and an oil pump! I had twin 68 Firebird 350's that my wife and I used to drive, I had swapped a 350 horse 400 from a Bonneville into mine and it was a cool sleeper! I also had a 67 400 convertible that was optioned out real nice, it had disc brakes, Deluxe interior with optional head rests, AM-FM stereo, hood tach and the factory traction bars with a 3.55/1 posi.. In 67 only Firebird had ''mono-leaf'' rear springs so they put factory traction bars in the 400's to stop spring wrap up! I got springs from a 68 400 that were 7 leaves on the right side and 6 on the left and put them in it, That car rode rough but it sure hooked up good! I also had a lot of GTO'S, and I still have two, A 64 convertible and a 70 convertible both tucked away for retirement builds! I had several 65/66 Mustangs and a 67 Cougar, I have a 70 Cougar convertible that I'm parting out on Ebay that sat and rotted to pieces, It has a 351 Cleveland in it that is stuck from sitting, I have a 64 Falcon 2 dr. post and a 63 wagon and I recently found a nice 78 T-bird, and a 75 Elite to play with.
Basically, every Pontiac v8 weakness is the oiling system and the NON forged rods. Always plan on upgrading to forged rods and a Ram Air 4 style oil pump on a rebuild.
Nice recovery fellas. Lovely understated Firebird model should be kept pristine. Since the drive line no longer matches, go for an M23 Anniversary if you plan to tour it. Also the wheels would be best made Pontiac. Black Chrome from Detroit Wheel and Tire would be a nice touch. Cheers.
Holy Crow on old motor had nice life and how many miles did whole car have before new rebuilt 400 motor went in ? That older motor can be 5 cylinder out 8 cylinders block ! First time ever seen a 400 motor go that bad and only have 2.5 litres of old engine oil in crankcase too and that so wild!
Thank you, we ended up selling all the spare engines and parts for a bargain to a gentleman who was building a couple Pontiacs. Everyone was happy at the end of the day.
Yeah it was a must, didn't want to do the typical sbc route... the block had a Few small pieces taken out at the bottom of the two cylinders but I'm sure it could still be usable with some clean up.
Maybe a Chevy motor can be found if nothing else works? I know it’s not the purist way but I have heard they can be used on them being from GM and are more plentiful and therefore easier and less expensive to replace. Are there any mods to improve the oiling in the 400? That is a very nice car too!!
Yeah lots of people choose that route. Tbh if anything I would've went with a 350 pontiac over a SBC. If it wasn't going poncho powered it would've been an LS. Thank you, Not to sure about any mods, just drive it and enjoy it for what it is.
@@Theoldcarchannel. one of my uncles (RIP) had one and he had swapped the motor. I can’t recall if it was a 350 originally and they had put in a 400. It was metallic brown with a white vinyl top and white interior. It had been sitting for a while; not sure what happened to it. Hope it survived and is sitting nicely in someone’s garage being cared for and driven regularly.
How the hell did they manged to blow and crack an engine that bad ? I saw bent rods, bent push-rods, bent valves, snaped crankshaft and camshaft, cracked cilinders and cracked pistons, but never all at once
Ahh...C'mon.....MIG welder and a little JB weld and that motor would have been as good as new !....I like the original pontiac wheels on these cars though. Nice little pick up.
Pontiac's have oiling weakness, the pump and the returns are less than ideal. They are notorious for oil starvation if over revved if not addressed. This typical result in a spun bearing when running the through gears like at the strip. The oil gets trapped in the top of the heads and by the time you red line 2nd or 3rd the pump is sucking air. Enlarging the oil passages and upgrading to high volume oil pump is sound insurance for a street car, oil scavenging mod is even better. It's more a problem for manual cars as it's happens right around 6000, most stock Pontiac's roll over around 5500 so the auto guys typically just avoid it. I helped a buddy rebuild a 400 HO 3 times in 1 year back in the day. The first time we rebuilt it, the second we upgraded to a high volume oil pump, that didn't last the first trip down the drag strip, the third time we had the heads ported and they enlarged the oil drains while they cleaned up everything else. As far as I know that engine is still going strong over 30 years later, just slightly stronger than stock but still good for low 13's runny the factory cast headers and Q-jet.
I used to eat these 400's for lunch with my 70 Mercury Cyclone 429cj with 4 speed. That Merc would burn rubber in all 4 gears...great motor...shitty brakes...haha
Haha would be interesting to see how long it would last. Would probably wipe out the bearings first knowing it would be close to impossible to get it perfectly straight/ true.
Heavy duty Rev up also used synthetic oil not convetial plus recycled yuck engine plus stuck PCV Valve and no lead additive in fuel to didn't have add ! High ethonal fuel caused this damage plus rich setting on carb with choke on so ran lean!
That was not just lack of oil that destroyed that engine that was high RPM too because it should not of made such a mess with just lack of oil high RPM is what did the destruction in that engine
Bend push rods are going to be Dylan McCool's legacy.
I am a FORD guy, but I almost cried when I saw that poor motor! I cannot IMAGINE the sound when it let go.
Those 400's are hard to beat
Nice to have family/friends that are willing and Knowledgeable Enough to be able to help!
Amen, makes the hobby that much more fun/enjoyable
Pontiac sure made some nice hot rods. Hard to believe they are gone.
Yeah it's unfortunate, before you know it they'll all be gone. World is going to shit
That old 400 may have hit full send.....what a Nice Car!
Needs Pontiac Rally II wheels, the Rally gauges, reproduction Ram Air setup, and a factory hood tach.
Definitely needs pontiac wheels, the rally wheels are all I had at the time, looked way better than the iroc wheels that came on the car when we bought
That is a very beautiful car, almost as beautiful as a '66 Mustang!
I had a '69 in high school w/350. It had a limited-slip diff. Very beautiful car...need to get me one and relive!
Heck yeah! Don't wait, get one and start enjoying it!
You two pulling out the pistons was hilarious! “It’s a boy!”
Haha I'm glad someone enjoyed that part 🤣🤣

what a sound , goosebumps.
wish i had an uncle like that. love the steel wool cylinder hone. new engine sounds nice and balanced
17:15 Cool burnout of the '69 Firebird 400!
Reminds me of the green '69 Firebird my dad drove around Rochester back in the day. Had the 350 though-no 400.
That was one shot engine. Glad you got that old Pontiac on the road again.
Yeah it was pretty BAD! Wasn't expecting that carnage when we originally bought it!
I had a cam like that once. It was in a Briggs and Stratton!!!
Enjoyed the Camero oh I mean Firebird Project😀
What a beauty! I hope she goes to someone who will lover her! Thanks for sharing! 👍🏻👍🏻👍🏻
She's in a nice collection now with other beautiful cars
Nice! I own a 69 Firebird 400 (w/455). Thank you for NOT putting a SBC in it. Would have liked to see some pictures of the motor.
Next level destruction!
Yeah it was BAD lol
That’s a nice hat!
😎🤘
That remind me of the 67 Firebird I had . I ruin the rod bearing on a 326 just by changing the oil. Then I got a 455 out 72 Grand Prix and put it in.
Filming this one in a mirror. Nice touch 😉
Actually, front camera of my phone. Forgot to reverse it

Yeah it was pretty bad, but she's running good as new now. Drive them, break them, fix them, repeat lol
How many engines did it take to make one good one?
The red one only. New cam & lifters, new rings, new bearings, etc...intake & carb, distributor, etc off the original engine
Oiling system isnt bad on Pontiac engines. The issue is small oil holes in bearings. We fix that issue
Sweet car the only thing wrong with it is those chevy rally rims on it it's needs a set of PMD rallys
All I had at the time, luckily we bought a couple sets of 15" PMD wheels in the fall so that will change in the summer I'm sure
