Buster personally paid for my daughter's college fees and tucked me into bed every night for the past 20 years. Rest in peace Big B, you will be missed.
I have to believe Birgir's sacrifice was a joke that even the developers were in on. The frankly absurd framing of that scene for a character that had spoken maybe 2 lines before and the unceremonious revival of same character in a side quest leads me to the only logical conclusion: Santa Monica is playing a prank on us.
I'd like to discuss the general plot structure a bit. The original game benefitted greatly from being a "one-take", single focus story that leaves more out than it includes. Kratos is barely a character that most people recognize and Atreus is the surrogate for the player. The first scene is preparing for a pyre for Kratos' wife and it sets a very solemn tone. I'd be neglectful to not mention that there were plenty of jokes and humorous moments but they were paced enough to overpower the tone. The flavor of regret and choices and redemption were excellent. In Ragnarok, they've greatly expanded the cast of characters. Atreus is playable and has his own plot outside of Kratos, which is good. We now have the entire Asgardian pantheon on top of the characters introduced for whatever reason (Birgir and his crew, Tyr being a non-entity, that little boy near the cliffs of Asgard) that the narrative framing is no longer about the God of War but his found family or whatever you want to call it. The tone is not solemn and regretful, it is about challenging fate. It is that of rebellion. The act of rebellion is typically portrayed as a positive act in media and that isn't different here. The characters believe they can stop fate, stop the Gods and stop living the lives they currently do if they work together. Even the realms are rebelling from their natural forms (thats Fimbulwinter for ya!) While I do think this is a good idea, on paper it reduces the characters to being beholden to prophecy and fate. Everyone that finished the first title in this new series saw that Kratos is going to die. The characters were not aware the prophecy existed until the very end of 1, which made the reveal that much better. With so much talk of death and Kratos focusing more on survival instead of focusing on spending his remaining time with his son, I believe the original ending of Ragnarok ended in Kratos actually dying and passing the title of God of War to Loki. The schizo part of my brain believes this was changed in response to the reception of The Last of Us 2, which attempted a similar passing of the torch. Ragnarok feels like both God of War 2 and God of War 3 combined and then reduced to become a complete package. The pacing of the story, from Freya getting over the death of her only son (in which she essentially tortured to keep alive) to The GodFather's betrayal of Thor and killing of Brok felt like it should not happen in this game but in a non-existent sequel. We are introduced to characters that die in the same game, leaving little empathy for their death. Plot threads are tied up without much fanfare or focus and it makes the game feel rush and slow-paced at the same time. Kratos' ending is that of acceptance, of doing the right thing for the ones you love and that you are never stuck in your ways. It is a good ending for him and I'm glad he got to see Atreus become his own character instead of "Son of Kratos". I can't wait for someone to take a golf club to his head in the next game to push an adult Atreus to become the new God of War.
Yeah, my biggest complaint with this game overall is the structure and pacing is so out of whack. It really does feel like they condensed what should have been 3 games into 2 because they were just ready to be done
Across this entire playthrough I never resonated so much with the phrase "Who the fuck is Birgir?" Me and my friends who played this together, despite six of us watching the story, had no idea who the fuck he was.
Just want to thank you again for editing these video together. Every video makes me die laughing and these are a perfect mid-point between the raw VOD and a 15-minute highlight video.
I think my favorite part of this playthrough was when Joseph got so baffled and amused by the games seemingly more nonsensical bits that he starts making jokes about it being written by an A.I, completely unaware that those exact moments are actually just the game making reference to completely real, if obscure Norse mythology like Hildisvíni being a boar-man and Freyja's friend, as well as Jörmungandr being the "child" of Loki and Angrboda who time traveled after getting hit by Thor really really hard.
theres a difference between referencing something for the sake of a check list making it seem like the devs did their homework and actually just writing that naturally to fit into the story in a way that makes sense.
Haven't played this either but if the first hour rubbed you the wrong way I think you're not really gonna care for this game as most people I've seen say that the beginning is the best part of it
2:16:15 Again believe Joes describing the point while missing it completely, similiar to the scene with angrwhatever the fuck, the marble and the snake. "Who the fuck is Birgir?" is the joke here. He randomly takes over as the main character out of nowhere, has his hero-moment and then seemingly dies while everybody in Vanaheim keeps talking about him as if we should know who the fuck he is.
This is a RIDICULOUSLY GENEROUS interpretation of the scene because it’s actually pretty obvious what’s ACTUALLY happening It unironically happens a ton in marvel and Star Wars Shit Writers want to establish “this has high stakes and real risk” they want audiences to fear that the heroes might not make it without ACTUALLY having to sacrifice a main character so they sacrifice some no name jobber sidekick so that they can point at THAT as establishing “people can die”
Anyone else think freya is one of the most unlikeable characters in the game? Like mostly because of her mouth and voice acting honestly and her mood swings just make no sense

The thing at 25:00 was so absurd I legit thought it was a jump cut until Joe explained

@@cia4u401 honestly does there need to be another God of War game? I’d rather Santa Monica make something new.
Birgir was the best of us
No way he lives right

You guys didn't know who Birgir was? Not real fans, clearly
1:14:57 "He still slays gods, but now he's sad about it?" is my favourite line, it's sooo good

I can't believe Joe laughed at the emotional impact of BifurBofurBombur's death scene, typical contrarian Joe
FOR BIRGIR!!!! also this is the perfect thing to get me through the day before the AL Somnium Files streams start.
Wait, Im not up to date with Joe's streams. He'll be streaming AI soon?

AI would make obscure references to Norse Mythology though.
Regular and extra lean in the thumbnail… yeah this one is gonna be good
Pouring one out for Burger
Hard agree on the Shrek 2 climax, I rewatched that section so many times as a kid
The interdimensional lizard monster looks cool, I agree. Probably the coolest even.
And yeah, I'm not exactly sure what's going on in The Dark Knight's ending.
FOR BUNGER!!!!!!!!!!!!

Comeback of the legendary Walrus
Not sure if I should watch this. Is the game worth playing unspoiled? I watched the first-ish hour and it rubbed me off the wrong way
Gameplay good
Story pacing eclectic
If you played the previous one and are invested should be worth
