how much nitrogen is too much for the year? your hybrid organic program is right around 3.5lb/1000 for the year. could you push it to 5lb/1000? Is that 5 a max? If you went over would that just burn out your lawn? does that require more watering? what would that even look like or cost?
No need for Lawn Paint. Our Bahia grass just went dormant here in Central Florida just next to I-4 North of Orlando. I feel it will be Spring literally in a month or 2. Why paint it when it will be going green anyway? I just sprayed the micronutrients today and played down Sunniland 7-0-20 with insecticide in the orange bag I bought from the Sunniland plant in Longwood. I always spray the chems down with Lazer blue dye too. I like how it greens the grass. Plus after the dye wears off in a few days the lawn goes green with the micronutrients and the fertilizer. Win win.
I tissued tested turfgrass seasonally for 6 years straight and can verify that clipping removal robs at least a pound of nitrogen per year. Dry weight tissue nitrogen will be about 5%. Do the math and run the yearly numbers and it comes out to about a pound of N and a 1/2 pound of K plus everything else. Plus, all of the nutrients are biologically active when they are recycled not to mention all of the sugars and natural compounds produced by the plant that will feed the bacteria.

Hopefully your prediction for the lawn paint is wrong, but I suppose we will see. I've done in the off season just out of curiosity and can possibly see painting my Poa Triv, but you never know what's going to happen. I take pride in my yard, but I tell ya, I am really tired of fighting this Triv.
Hey Allyn, just had an idea to enhance your app… It would be nice for the diy home owners to be able to identify certain weeds… So if it’s technically possible it would be cool to enclose real pics of weed images and names to those images to use as a identifying tool…

Question: Does lawn painting block sunlight from reaching the grass blades? I'm probably missing something, but I wonder if frequent painting would destroy a lawn over time from lack of sunlight.

There is no sense to those that decide what is good and what isn’t. For some grass gets a bad rap . I don’t give those people a second thought! Fert life!!
Last year a jealous neighbor joked that I was painting my lawn. I get his point, I use marker dye to show where my Prodiamine WDG is being applied for complete coverage. I know you’re not a fan of marker dyes but it does let you know if your PPE has failed and to take action to clean things up. Another bang up podcast/video. 👍👍
I buy Lazer Lawn Dye when I spray any chemicals on the lawn. I even use it especially for Round-Up in the flower beds. It makes it so easy to know where you've sprayed. Also my neighbor thinks I just painted the lawn too until the Next Micronutrients actually kick in and then it is truly green then it looks awesome.
This was a great listen on my snow route today for sure.
I have a friend who lives in California, they moved into a house with a grass lawn right when all the serious droughts started, they painted their lawn for a year or two as they didn't think it would an ongoing situation, after a year or two of that they had the lawn ripped out and put down gravel/stone out front with zero scape/ low water plantings and put astro turf in the back yard around the patio and then gravel for the rest, the lawn painting is a great idea for a we need this to look great now but I don't think its viable long term

Mr. Hane, appreciate the info and discussion on nitro recommendations. Before watching, I was feeling a bit lost on when to fertilize my ‘21 backyard reno. Also, love the 80’s theme intro-outro music.
I don’t think lawn care will go the way of fitness. We’re more sensible overall. I do think some people post their lawns when in fact they hire out the lawn treatments while saying they are DIYers, lol.

In the future it would be great if we could assign grass type to a segment and get a plan based on our individual yards/segements. Many of us in the transition zone here in Georgia have warm and cool season grasses. Usually it is warm season in the front yards and cool season in the back yards.
