I disagree with you I got the iPad Pro 12.9 inch. Fifth generation mounted on my 18 wheeler dashboard if I listen to you and get the Wi-Fi only I will be left without GPS on my truck and us something very important before you buy it to know about
Yes, absolutely. This is very true and I regret not touching on it in the video. It has come up a few times in the comments, so it’s good to know how many people really make use of the GPS on cell models.
Should use your phones gps
I’m also a truck driver too how do you have it mounted I was gonna buy the 12.9 too
I use a proper GPS for my truck
That situation definitely makes sense for cellular if you are in one place a lot this saves $
Another note to make regarding folks who need the gps (truckers, etc.): Wifi iPad models use Access Points (APs) to infer your location. Accurate enough to get around, but still not 100%. That being said, doing whats mentioned in this video using a hotspot, is essentially a dedicated AP so as long as you have a data connection over the hotspot, your ipad will be able to cache your route, and keep up with you.
I agree with you analysis, it depends on specific use case and for someone who can tether save your money get the wifi version :)
I decided not to get a new iPhone anymore. i prefer to get an iPad with cellular. So instead of changing for an updated iPhone plus an iPad every couple of years..... I save more than $200....
Great video. A lot of helpful tips.
I was so close to buying an iPad with 5g until I noticed the whole personal hotspot feature when I picked up my MacBook Air M1 last year. I’m definitely sticking with Wi-Fi only since the only times it’ll be used are at home and in the car when the kids need entertainment during longer car rides. Thanks for helping folks stay informed brotherman.
Care to explain that feature on the MacBook Air M1?
I bought the cellular iPad mini 6 bc I noticed there was no gps on the wifi model. There was some lag issues when using the hotspot from my iPhone on the wifi model. So with the cellular model I have smooth gps coverage, but the tablet data plans are too much for my budget. I am using hot spot from my regular phone with T-Mobile, and it works perfect for gps navigation or music. The points made in this video are valid, even if I did have cellular on my tablet the service will only be as good as my iPhone.
I was hesitant to get the Wi-Fi only model, but eventually decided to get the cellular M1 iPad Pro 11” I’m glad I got the cellular version. It’s much more convenient since I stream and play online games and best of all I can now go anywhere without the frustration. 5g is awesome crazy fast.
Thanks for sharing! Yeah that makes a lot of sense. Since you play online games, having that dedicated connection is worth it.
I use hotspot for gaming and it works pretty good tbh no issues unless I’m trying to be on my phone then yea it slows down lol.
lack of GPS is a key decision point as well... noted many below also commented the same.
Awesome review thanks for sharing from Australia 🇦🇺
Hey there! 👋🏽 Glad you enjoyed it.
I have a cellular iPad mini but I would like to life the offline life with a wifi only tablet as well. I think wifi only tablets are great if want to disconnect and still do the basic stuff like take photos or watch or listen to downloaded stuff, and draw, paint or take notes as well. That’s how a wifi only iPad would serve me better than a cellular iPad.
Thank you!! You are a lifeSAVER!
Wow, thank you for a great video.
AHHHH A RUSH POSTER. Good stuff!!!
Endlessly rocking! 🤘🏽
Got my computer illiterate mom the 4g version of an ipad, and I have not regretted it a day. It just works everywhere.
Thank you very much for this video! I've been wanting to get the Wi-Fi IPad Pro but kept hesitating as I wasn't sure what the cellular features were and if I even needed it. The fact that I can hook up my iphone as a hotspot on the Wi-Fi-only model has helped me decide..phew, finally have a decision! :)
Hey there, this made my day! So glad you found this video helpful. Let me know how it works out for you!
You choose wrong.
Glad to see you back. Great video. Good advice for sure.
Thanks, it's good to be back! So glad you enjoyed this one. 👊🏽
i use a Garmin Glo 2 GPS with my Ipad air. It was only $90, so I'm still saving money versus purchasing a cellular version iPad. Plus, I save on the monthly bill. A few extra steps to setup but everything works great.
Thank you! We’ve missed you. Very helpful for parents out there. 😁
You're welcome. I missed you all too!
Love this channel. ❤️
Glad you enjoy it! Many thanks for your support. 🙏🏽
I have the mini cellular. I use it for off site data collection and research. No free wifi out on most job sites and draining my phone battery is not an option.
If everywhere you go has (free) wifi, then no, no need for cellular.
Awesome and brilliant 🤩🙏🏻🙏🏻🙏🏻thanks brother 😎😎😎
Most welcome 😊
Thanks you so much now I have idea
Good videos. Subscribed.
I didn’t know there was an auto-pair setting for hotspots. Enabling! Use it all the time that way but always had to choose to join.
Dude, it's a dream to use! Let me know how it works out for you.
I did but didn’t know you could auto-enable the feature! So convenient now that I’m on vacation. Thanks man.
Personally, I want a cellular iPad over a Wi-Fi iPad only for being able to see my texts on it. Any tips on that?
I personally picked up the cellular M1 11” ipad pro cause of the job i do i need the cellular part especially while turning apartments and do video calls with my supervisor to get the required parts and materials
Nice, thanks for sharing! Sounds like cellular would serve you best in that line of work. 👊🏽
2:37 You mentioned cell 5 GHz Radio which is accurate for wifi, on cellular 5G, that would be "generation" using multiple bands.
I´m planning to get an Ipad Mini 6 + cellular, and the thing is to land in the UK get a Vodafone sim card, insert in the ipad and use it for UBER, and as a hot spotting to my cell . I dont wanna use public or hotel wifi for security reasons.
The other option is to insert the UK sim Card on my phone and hottspotting to an Ipad Mini 6 (WIFI only version) , and save some dollars on the ipad.
But i dont know wich option is more convenient? what D´You think guys?
Thank you 👍.
Thank you so much.
Great to see you back, your new setup looks really nice 👍
Hey, thanks! Good to be back.
Great advice. Always good to save a couple of hundred $$$ !!
Hey Mike, good to hear from you! Glad you enjoyed this video. Hopefully it does save someone a few bucks. :)
So if I buy a Wi-Fi only are you saying that I can tether it without paying the fee to Verizon? I know nothing about technology but I understood what you said. Please let me know I am in the market for the 21 model with 64 GB I do nothing but go on FaceTime to manage by business page. That’s about it that’s all I’ll be using it for please let me know thank you for your video. It was very informative please answer my question
Completely agree with you. I recently bought my first Ipad (M1 Ipad pro 11 ”) and decided not to choose the cellular option because for my Iphone 12 pro I am already paying $10 a month with AT&T to have a hotspot, so the most logical thing was to share that with the Ipad when I did not have Wifi. In the month and a half that I have been with the iPad I have only had to use this once, so it was not worth paying more. Thanks for the video!
Hi there Kathia. Thanks for stopping by and sharing your experience! Glad to hear this setup is working out for you as well. The M1 iPad is such a powerhouse!
I also bought the M1 iPad Pro 11” with cellular data and 5g is a game changer. I only pay $25 for unlimited data. And my new iPhone 13 mini data plan is also $25 and 5g is cool on the mini. I used more my iPad more then my iPhone.
except it kills both batteries instead of just one and you can use gps on the iPad stand alone with offline google maps because it has built in gps
Thank you for ending my dilemma dude!
It’s a pleasure to have helped! Let me know how it works out for you.
@@OneTechMind was thinking to buy an ipad mini 6 for portable gaming and as a sketch book but then I wonder does the cellular version make any difference to my purpose. And now I know I can save some bucks and go for the apple pencil.
@@aimanhakim3304 how’s this working out for you? Have you regretted not getting cellular
My goodness thank you! i've been on the fence about the GPS version and the wifi. Didn't wanna pay another $20-30/month for data im barely gonna use. This just made my decision to get the wifi 11" iPad pro. I have the 13 pro max as my phone so using hotspot will be fast and easy
So glad I could help! Let me know how it works for you.
The GPS and data are unrelated. The GPS receiver works independent of having a data plan, or even a SIM installed. Using the larger maps on the iPad with accurate location is often nicer than the smaller map on the phone.
Wow. I wish I knew this before I bought my cellular iPad mini 5.
Thanks!
I really can’t decide. I literally only watch UA-cam on mine and don’t know if the hotspot will be fast enough hmm
Does with mean the hotspot on my iPhone will always be on and draining battery even when nothing is connected to the hotspot?
I want to get the 12.9 in iPad Pro 256gb and my options are 256gb, 256gb cellular, and 256gb Wifi. If I get the normal 256gb, that will allow me to connect to both cellular and Wi-Fi correct? Or neither?
Get an office lab keyboard. It’s only 100 bucks and i like it way more than the Magic Keyboard. Like a lot more.. It actually had function keys and it doesn’t drain the iPad battery. It has its own battery that stays charged for over a month of daily use
And gps ? Can you share it also from your iPhone ?
I use Samsung phone with iPad and my ATT unlimited plan does not cover hot spot coverage. I have to change my plan which cover hot spot that means I have to pay additional $20. I did all calculation and decided to buy WiFi with cellular if I have to pay additional $20
great video
EWhat if I have an iPhone 10 max will that support the iPad Pro with the M1 chip?
What about the GPS hardware that exists on the cellular version but not on the wifi only version?
Yep, you would definitely need the cellular version if you need accurate location tracking.
@@OneTechMind Or you need a bluetooth GPS module that works with crApple.
and what if you have a Samsung phone (Note 9) but plan to get an iPad without cellular...??? Is this still possible to hotspot?
Very good video.
Thank you!
Wifi only + Portable Wifi Modem or second cheap android phone. Save a lot of money
one kidney costs more than 349$ :)
Bc of your video I changed my air 2022 today. I went with wifi + cellular 64 first and exchanged it to just wifi but this time 256. Thx man.
Guys i am telling you some thing different there is some lag in hotspots, cellular speed is much better then wifi, especially when you play a game you need fast data speed
I play games on my iPad and whenever I’m outside and use the hotspot, the connection is bad. But if not playing games it’s ok.
I can make phone calls but I can’t received phone calls in the iPad from other iPhone.
QUESTION: If I have the wifi only iPad, can I use navigation apps and mount it in my car if I use the hotspot from my iphone?
Hey there. You can, but unfortunately the Wi-Fi iPad does not have built-in GPS and cannot use your phone’s GPS while tethered. Instead, it will approximate your position using Wi-Fi, which is subpar. Therefore, this is one of the use cases where a Cellular iPad may be required if you need accurate location data.
Great video! QUESTION: Can I use the hotspot on an ANDROID phone to do this?
yes
So if I use the iPad Mini for biking with the komoot app I am better off with cellular than wifi or am I better off with a separate mobile wifi router from Huawei! connected to all my electronics, apple watch, laptop, and iPad at the same time!?
How to think best as a gravel biker out in the forrest or at least out of downtown!?
is a lot of money between the two ipad mini with or without cellular...
I already got a huawei mobile router, but I honestly think they lower the connection speed in the night as it always drops in connection stability after 10 pm... Not sure what to choose! 🤨 is there no GPS in an iPad without the cellular so my Komoot app will not function!?
Hi there. If your intent is to use the iPad for tracking your route or for directions, I’d recommend the cellular model that does have GPS. Otherwise, your location data will be approximate and not 100% accurate.
@@OneTechMind oh wow, I had no idea is such a difference!
Yes, I was thinking to use the quad lock to the ipad mini and connect it to the cockpit of my bike to track my fitness training and get directions and maybe also film my trips with the ipad mini
Dose maps works with signing in to same iCloud on your iPhone with iPad wifi ?
I personally wouldn't like to use one device to power the signal of the other. I got the iPad mini cellular version and outside of not being able to make calls or text outside of apple devices I'd give up my note 20 ultra and only use the iPad.
Totally fair! Cell models are super practical. I’m still surprised at how well auto hotspot works.
@@OneTechMind yeah I did the math and it would actually be cheaper if I did a combo of say the apple watch and the iPad mini than to have saved just 150 one time on the non cellular version and keep paying on your note and up the Hotspot amount from 5 gigs. Not necessarily debating our point because some people have their phone paid off and the math would be different. I'm just in the user case that a cellular ipad or small tablet fits my wants much better than an overpriced phone that becomes obsolete once I'm one and around my large tablet. Now the iPad mini is used inside and out and again short of calls and text I find myself trying to find cheaper alternatives for those needs.
Will you get text messages on iPad when connected to iphone hotspot?
Hello I got a iPad Air 4 gen that cellular on the go I think it’s better for my photo shoots.
Nice! The Air is definitely no slouch.
What about GPS? I know the wifi iPad doesn't have GPS antenna, but maps will work when connected to the iPhone for giving driving directions?
Hey there! Maps will approximate your location via nearby WiFi networks on a WiFi-only iPad, so driving directions won’t be a great experience. If you plan to use it for this frequently, I’d suggest the cellular model!
Hello. I am Italian and I must admit that I had a hard time following you. so I ask you something. having a phone with 5g connectivity can i take advantage of this speed if i connect an ipad (wi-fi only) using the hot spot? the speed is higher than that of connecting the ipad to a phone only 4g? and finally there is a difference between an ipad pro M1 and a basic ipad in this sense? excuse the length of the message.
Hey, no problem!
If your phone plan includes hotspot functionality, you can tether your iPad to it and use the 5G. It may be faster than 4G depending on your carrier.
No difference between recent iPad models. This works great on the new iPad mini that just came out, for example.
Hope this helps!
@@OneTechMind this hot spot feature sounds pretty new to me. when i connected my ipad to my old 4g phone i didn't have a particular phone plan. it just connected via hot spots. it just worked. now I investigate this thing better. Anyway thanks a lot for your reply.
So if I misplace my iPad with Wifi only, Find My iPhone will be less accurate?
I just want to buy iPad 9th generation iPad wifi 64gb it cost me low but I need sim to do calls and other things but don't have enough money so I have questions that if I buy any sim company 5g hotspot does it allow to call on iPad and internet and does it work 5g ? I have also see 3g mobile that works on 4g with use of 4g hotspot so. Please reply me it can save my money 💰 to
i have a wifi only m1 ipad pro
i really wanted cellular it was just too expensive for it i just think of it like a mac that has no cellular anyways
i just use my iphone if i need to look up something and hotspot in a pinch
Right on, and good point about MacBooks. I’m surprised Apple hasn’t offered a built-in cellular option for them yet…
Which one should I buy wifi or cellular? I'm a student in lake placid New York
Hey there! I’m not familiar with cell coverage in NY, but I’d say it depends on how often you think you’ll need a cell connection. As a student, I imagine it may make more sense to get it if you’re constantly on the move.
Can the iPad mini 6 with Cellular 5g data make a personal hotspot? If yes, can I connect my Smart TV to it and watch Netflix without lag? Thank you, I'm considering buying it tomorrow.
Yes it hotspots. But I don't know about connecting to your tv tho. Hotspot is limited, so I wouldn't rely on it. Lags, especially after excessive use.
But is it still kill your hotspot data
Loved the Loki reference 😂
For all time!
Can i use my Android phone hotspot?
Silly question, are all the benefits exclusive to iPhones ?? Will I benefit with the advantages with a droid phone out in the field ?
look up how to tether from an android phone...?
can i do it with my honor phone and my ipad
I am noticing that my 2021 iPad Pro 12.9 using my AT&T hotspot on my iPhone 12 Pro Max has serious lag when you gps directions….why?
There is no gps in the wifi model, run into the same issue.
Unfortunately if you get your iPad at your cellular company they don’t even off the WiFi only option 🙄
Very true!
Yep and it sucks forcing you to get internet you will barely use! Our phones have Hot spot why waste that money!
I had a cellular ipad with at&t and it almost never worked. As far as hotspot I also find it incredibly unreliable.
I don’t know if my comment fits here, but in my case, I have an iPad Air wifi that I paired with my iPhone 12pro. I didn’t feel that it was a reliable and stable connection.
I also bought a iPad mini with cellular for content viewing and the 5g blazing fast compared to pairing to my 12pro.
In the video, it was mentioned that 5g was a negligible difference is wrong.
Again, my comment is for my iPad mini with cellular and I couldn’t go back to an ipad without cellular.
Time is money, and 5g has the speeds to make me forget I’m spending for it.
Well, it was a negligible difference for me, but that may depend on your coverage area and carrier. Glad to hear built-in cellular works best for you!
I tried this but sadly I use my hotspot to stream movies at work and t mobile is slow plus I'm capped at 40GB. AT&T works better but I did not want to switch providers so I signed up for the $20 ATT unlimited tablet plan.
How do I get that.
I have T-Mobile and I agree it’s slow or just dosent work
BUT that was the whole point of me wanting a cellular ipad:
So i didnt have to buy a phone + phone service,
and instead get the ipad + cellular/data service for it.
You got me there. 😝 And that totally makes sense if you don’t need or want a phone with cell service. Appreciate you sharing!
Is it possible to connect an iPad mini to an Android hotspot?
Yep, you’ll just have to manually enable hotspot on your Android phone.
Thank you sir, just saved 200€.
Happy to hear! Let me know how it works out for you.
It didn’t, cellular is a game changer.
What if you have an iPhone XR? Will it still work?
Hello there. Yes, as long as you have hotspot enabled with your plan. I would expect you to get similar speeds as the iPhone 11 in my video. Thanks for watching!
Hey there can anyone answer me can I connect android hotspot to apple wifi varient 🙏🙏🙏 pls reply fast 🙏
Yep, of course. You’ll just need to manually connect from Wi-Fi settings.
@@OneTechMind 🙏🙏🙏
I’m so dumb and took iPad Pro with me and played my UA-cam,but since my car drove passed my house and iPad stoppped playing and I stay dumber from 2018-2021 and until I bought iPads (10) generations and I bought on apple online and the way it asked me to choices so I decided to choices the cellular with WI-FI AND I SEARCHED WHAT IS CELLULAR SO I GOT THE ANSWER AND THEN NOW ANYWHERE I GO I GOT MY IPAD WITH ME AND I USED EVER SINCE AND I AM CRAZY DIE WITHOUT MY CELLULAR IPAD AND I CAN used MY MAPS TO GO IS A BRILLIANT ASWOME AND I PLANING TO BUY A NOTHER MINI IPAD ONE MORE WITH CELLULAR,BUT NOT MINI 2021 IAM WAITING A NEW ARRIVAL.
Don’t try to use your iPad on Google maps or GPS if it’s not A Wi-Fi cellular iPad because the Wi-Fi only don’t have GPS
I definitely wouldn’t say using wifi only iPad is “just as good” as cellular iPad. Using an iPad for navigation in a vehicle requires gps and that won’t working using personal hotspot. It allows you to leave you iPhone battery topped off.
Then just use your phone for navigation
@@Adaobieistypingexactly 🤣😩😂
No GPS
Very true.
Just spend the 200$ and get the cellular the hotspot sometimes doesn’t work well. You would’ve spent the 200$ somewhere else anyway lol
Well I would have spent it on a Magic Keyboard, but everyone’s situation is different. Glad to hear the cellular iPad is worth it for you!
@@OneTechMind great idea lol or a pencil
Didnt know they could cap your hotspot speeds even in unlimited, unlucky for you xD
I know right! I find it misleading and anti-consumer for them to use that word. Appreciate you rolling through!
I like your videos but I don't agree because you lose battery performance if you're out of the house causing more stress to the iphone battery.
Thanks man! I appreciate your position. Using hotspot *a ton* over time may impact the battery negatively.
What's up people! It's good to be back. Let me know what you thought of this video down below. Did you know about Instant / Auto Hotspot?

Ya this does not work. I have a iPad Pro and a mini…using my iPhone to give my iPad network access for gps… so slow and unusable for gps usage!
