I’m so glad! And love Clint! ❤️ He has in my opinion the best videos on them. I would like to try and attempt to have a bit more content on these guys out at some point hopefully~
1. I got one of these b4 anyone had a care guide 2. Thanks for going over the wild caught thing 3. Thanks for breeding these babies and I need one to partner 4. Mine is warming up to handle BUT is VERY jumpy and people should understand that It's not ALWAYS easy ty for the vid, we really needed this
I found the one that lives here. We live in an apartment building, so he probably escaped from his previous owner. We learned that they are very fast and jumpy, so if you take it out of the tank without care, it might run and find the nearest hole or hiding place. We also learned that these guys can use autotomy: they can drop their tail, so be careful when grabbing or handling. With ours, he can't be trusted outside of his enclosure very much, but my brother's been working on building trust and warming him up to the idea of being handled. They are very interactive. He's always watching or hanging out. I love just going up to his enclosure just to talk to him.
I’ve had a few scurry off on me as well but they aren’t the worst to catch, I’d say day geckos and those alike are even worse 😭 I had one drop it’s tail on me once while I was trying to give it meds but it’s since grown back thankfully.
I just REALLY want a small colony now 😊 currently no room for them but once I have some room they would likely be in a 75 gallon bio active enclosure I’ll set up with more climbing space and hides plus plants since currently I have a 2ft long bearded dragon in it whom is almost 9 years old or so maybe 10
Great video! You are correct there is not a lot of info out there on these guys. I have a trio myself and didn't realize they could lose their tails until I learned the hard way. Put a video up on my channel with footage of the broken tail moving about. It was pretty horrifying. Thanks for sharing your knowledge with us, super helpful!!
I’ve seen your trio they’re so cute! I just assume any lizard will lose their tail if I don’t know cause I’m always so nervous but I did end up having one lose it’s tail and regrow back after trying to treat it with some meds. He’s all good now but I feel your struggle 😅
Great video, your info is spot on. I have mine in a 24x18x36 and they rarely comes down from the top 12" so I wish I would have used a 36x18x24 at minimum but your recommendation of 36x18x36 is spot on, that really is a great size for these gems. Although they are arboreal they seem to utilize the horizontal space more than the vertical space so prioritizing horizontal space seems best. For example, I think 48 long and 24 tall would be even better than a 36 wide 36 tall.
Doing exactly what should be done with all coloured lights. Excellent video on these little guys. Hopefully it’ll not be too long before breeding them is cracked and they’ll be more prevalent in the hobby and more readily available.
There are Wild emerald tree skinks that visits my house every often! I can't believe they can be kept as pet! Btw, they look cute and happy with your care tho 💖
One important tip I've learned on Mercury vapor bulbs, get the same wattage of mercury vapor bulb from home Depot and it could easily be half as much money and is the same light bulb.
The mercury vapour bulbs are a rather specialize bulb as they produce heat, visible light, UVA, and UVB all in one bulb. Some people have a hard time finding UVB bulbs at Home Depot, let alone a Mercury Vapour. I can’t seem to find these mercury vapours bulbs on Home Depots website but I’d be careful with purchasing them if they do as they aren’t meant for reptiles and can possibly cause harm over time. But Home Depot does have a lot of other great ways you can save money for sure and I’m a big fan lol.
What a nice video! I wanted to learn more about them after hearing about them on Clints Reptiles. I don't have room for them right now, but maybe one day! They seem like such fun. It sounds like having a comfortable roomy enclosure for them is part of the key to them warming up to you. This was the first video I saw of yours, I was peering at your bookshelf, I see comics and manga :D I think based on spine colors you have Saga! Which makes you super extra cool.
Awesome video. I‘m going to get a group as soon as I can find one. They’re pretty rare in Germany. I’ll definitely try to breed them as well, so we don’t have to get wild caughts ✌🏽
Oh that’s amazing! I’ve always wanted to check out the reptile scene in Germany. I’ve been once to visit family so maybe next time I should try seeing what you guys have over there! Thanks again for watching!
Awesome video thank you very much for the incormation! I want a skink but there are so so many I want to make sure I get the right one for me and my lifestyle. Right now I have a bearded dragon and she is my first reptile so I have a lot of research to do ^_^ I really love these little ones. The fact thry dont just tolerate handling but seem to actually enjoy it and initiate it is fantastic and so unusual for smaller lizards. Hopefully as they become more captive bred I may get one. Until then research for me and practice with humidity in my spare enclosure. Thats my buggest concern jot having had experience with a tropical lizard yet ^_^
There are so many amazing species of skinks, I don’t blame you, they’re all so unique and amazing in their own way. Bearded Dragons are a great starter for sure but they’re like little piggies sometimes in my opinion 😆 Most of my stuff is tropical for some reason I don’t know why 😅 but you could totally do it especially since you seem to be so mindful of the animals and their well-being ❤️
I have the exact same setup, even got a peace lilly and pothos etc,,, now when I open the doors at 10am roughly 2 out of the 5 will run and jump at me and climb on my back and eventually jump back in to there enclosure. Id like to get a bigger enclosure too, something more like 4 to 5ft in height, Ive had my colonly for over 1yr and no breeding yet, thx for makin this video.
Without a doubt they will become popular, but once that happens I hope many people are already breeding them. So take advantage of wild caught individuals as they are very important in starting a captive gene pool.
Hopefully by the time your ready some will come, the time of year right now for reptiles isn’t the best (winter) hopefully the summer you’ll start to see more reptiles in general for sale when the weather starts to warm up~
Great video! I absolutely love my emerald tree skink and the info in this video was really helpful. I was hoping for a little advice. My skink has been having trouble shedding, and while I'm moving her to a larger, more humid bioactive enclosure soon, I was wondering if you had any tips on getting stuck shed off the tail especially. I've tried putting her in shallow water and using a q tip, but that doesn't seem enough. If you have any ideas on how to remove shed more effectively, I would be very thankful! I will be making a vet appointment soon if I can't get the skin off, but I would love to try something else before that if possible. Sorry this was a bit rambling, and again I really enjoyed the video!
Hello and Thankyou for the feedback! Baths deffinatley help and do more than just one. Do it everyday if you can until it comes off (within a reasonable time frame, if it still won’t come off after a week with daily baths then yes take her to get looked at). Make sure the waters warm and a comfortable temperature and that you’re soaking her for at least 15-20 min at a time. Hope this helps! I usually have success with regular baths for stubborn shed.
I don't know if this helps, but sometimes people who have snakes with stuck shed suggest putting them in a comfortable size tupperware (with holes) with damp paper towels, sometimes rubbing around on them can help it come off. If you don't have a humid hide already I'd make one, and maybe they'll use it. You can make a simple one with a tupperware with a hole in it and some moss just to get by until you have the new enclosure done.
we have been looking for emeralds for a couple months now, still very unsuccessful, the people/breeders we have found tell us they just dont ship. Would you know where we can find a breeder. We do understand that no onw is shipping due to the cold weather, so we are willing to wait. WE love watching your channel!!! Thanks
Oh Thankyou! I appreciate your feedback and comment ❤️ As of right now there isn’t too many breeders and most are wild caught. Even wild caught ones are not the easiest to find. But I promise you with some time and patience you will find yourself some lovely Tree Skinks as I’m finding they’re becoming more and more popular. Sit tight and I’m sure some will come your way eventually~
Whoops I guess I forgot that most important little bit, I’ll feed them insects 3 times a week for the adults and maybe I’ll sneak in something extra like a bit of fruit or repashy in between. I find they’re most active in the mornings so I’d say it’s best to feed them then. Thanks a bunch and hope this helped!
Hopefully I'll be getting some of these guys if the ones NERD are selling are captive bred or if I can find them captive bred somewhere else. I've been watching all of your and Clint's videos on them and planning out my bioactive terrarium build. Would having a male and female cohabitating without the intention to breed be a bad idea? I definitely want to get two of them.
Thank you so much for watching and for seeking out captive bred ones! It’s heartbreaking seeing the trouble the reptile and person has to go through when receiving wild caught reptiles. I dont think it’s a bad idea to have a male and female together but you might not be able to find all the eggs before they hatch since they hide them very well. So just be prepared if you do find a hatchling running around.
Great videos. I watched this and the vivarium video as I'm putting together a large tree skink project. You just reinforced my interest. Is there a rule of thumb on how many per enclosure sq/ft, gallons?
Thank you! Unfortunaltey no rule of thumb but for a pair id say a 24"x18"x36" is ideal and for 3-6 a 36"x18"x36" is good and thats what i'll be having soon for mine since i'm splitting up my colony a bit.
I believe their demand and availability is about the same everywhere right now. These lizards are still new to the hobby so captive bred ones will be hard to find but I know some people are working with them. They mostly just will pop up here or there in pet stores or reptile shows.
hi ... the video is very easy to understand thank you very much ... but i still have one question ... "how did your emerald tree skink get into your hands so tame ... while my emerald tree skink ... always blurred from me ... please give tips about that ... thank you..😁😁
Thanks for the comment! Food and patience is all I can say, I didn’t do anything particularly special, she just jumped out at me one day and just became very friendly. I have a second one that’s becoming use to me now! But I’ve had them for almost a year now and only 2/5 are comfortable and friendly with me. Hopefully one day they’ll warm up to you~
thanks for the info! i have a 4'x2'x2' tank. do you think 2' will be enough height for like 4 or 5 of these guy? they'll have plenty of room to explore, i just want to make sure the have enough climbing space
Hi... thanks so much for your videos... I just received my group of emerald skinks and I found one already burrowed in the substrate. Does this mean that she is likely preparing for laying eggs?
Thank you for your comment! So happy to hear about your new babies ❤️ If you just got them it could mean that they’re hiding and a little nervous and just need more time to settle in (I had this problem for about the first week and thought one of mine was missing!). Of course she could’ve came to you gravid already but I guess you’ll know when you see eggs or not. They’re sides and belly’s will be really round and plump if they are. Best of luck! ☺️
Thank you so much for watching! Last year and this year I have successfully bred these guys but I have a long wait list unfortunately and I only sell/ship in Canada.
I'd love a couple of these guys but don't want to support wild caught stores. I'm not quite prepared to jump into breeding them either so for now I'll just have to wait. They're very interesting though, like an Abronia Graminea but a bit more docile.
Just so you’re aware the hydrometer you have isn’t reliable. You’re best bet is getting a AcuRite pro humidity meter and thermometer. They’re able to be calibrated but are generally accurate out of the box🙂.
I agree they aren’t the greatest. I seem to have a problem finding a simple waterproof one but found a few candidates! That one you mentioned looks pretty neat, I also like the Zoo Med Digital Thermometer Humidity Gauge. The ones in this video seem off usually by a point or two when I compare them to my other hygrometers but I deffinatley don’t recommend these anymore because over time they become wonky and read inaccurately as you mention. I’m on my last batch so gunna be getting some new ones in the new year. I do prefer my own judgement of heat and humidity personally but like having a hygrometer to make sure everything’s accurate~
@@RedsFaunaverse I right now use govee but I’ve had problems with accuracy with the three I’ve had (two were replacements). So I’m not buying them again. It’s tough to find reliable hydrometers.
@@RedsFaunaverse oh absolutely. Chain Pet store workers are generally very under educated and spread inaccurate info to new owners as well. Unfortunately it’s a sad cycle I see a lot.
I feel so silly for not including the most basic of information but for babies I would say everyday to every other day depending on age but most that are older are good to bed fed about 3 times a week :)
Personally I have not but I do know my fire skinks make that sneeze noise and it’s cause they get dirt in their nose and they try to just sneeze it out. So if your emeralds spend a lot of time in the substrate it could be just them sneezing out dirt. I’d also be mindful of the temperatures and that it’s not too cold. Hope this helps!
My only concern is the height, the length is great but they would benefit from a lot more height with a tank that size. My tank is as tall as it is long. Another reptile species would probably enjoy that size enclosure more and it’s quite the nice size tank so you’ll have lots of other options to choose from :)
@@RedsFaunaverse was thinking that myself but I do have the extra large mesh chameleon cage I was also thinking about setting up again lol decisions decisions
Not always but they can be. I do find they tend to have more wider jaws/heads and come off a bit more bulky. I have two males and my one male isn’t as bulky as the other. The best way a lot of keepers have been able to tell is that yellow scale on their back heel. Odd but it seems accurate most of the time.
They are similar and I’d say their care is similar but not entirely the same. There is one black tree skink group on Facebook if you want to find out more information about them.
Question I know this video is older but peace lilies/white sails lilies are slightly toxic especially when ingested, do you still use these especially with semi omnivorous/omnivorous reptiles
To my knowledge the only "toxic" thing found in peace lillies are the oxalate crystals. These are also found in many other recommend plants such as pothos. It is a plant that is usually listed as being safe for reptiles. With that being said you wouldn’t want your reptiles to constantly eat a large quantity them as an over exposure could deffinatley cause harm. Mine thankfully don’t eat any of the vivarium plants. For cats and dogs though it is are mildly poisonous but not as much as real lilies are.
@@RedsFaunaverse thanks that was a big concern with my chameleons as they were both... off for a while when I had them in their tanks, thanks for clarifying
@@rutilas_fulgur6443 of course no problem! I no longer have this plant in there anymore too cause it wasn’t strong enough for them and they were destroying it when they would climb all over it.
I personally wouldn’t recommend two males together as they might fight. In a bigger colony like mine where I have two males and three females is ok but for a pair I’d recommend two females or one male and one female. Adults I feed about 3 times a week :)
@@zy8462 I believe for a pair that would be a good bare minimum. In the video I said an 18x18x24 but after observing their behaviour I believe a little more width is suitable so the enclosure size you mention should be good for a pair
I gave everybody some Panacur (fenbendazole) as it’s usually pretty safe for treating parasites. They responded well to it and have been pretty healthy since. I had an incident with my fire skink though where she had a rare stomach worm that needed to be looked at by a vet and treated with another medication I’m unfamiliar with.
@@RedsFaunaverse thank you for responding! How did you go about dosing and feeding? And did you do everyone at the same time or one of them and wait for a reaction or result?
@@trexxit For dosing you have to weigh them and give accordingly as Instructed on the medication (usually it’ll tell you if it weighs this much then you give this much). Some I had to give in their mouth with a syringe and the more friendlier ones I mixed up with some mashed banana and let them eat it. I have them three doses about a week to two weeks apart. There’s some different recommendations out there. I did everyone at once.
@@trexxit I would also like to add that this shouldn’t be replaced with medical advice and I will always encourage a vet if someone suspects something wrong with their pet.
Bigger is always better and some re-arrangements have been made but I currently have three now in the 36x18x36 and another pair in a 3ftx2ftx2ft enclosure. I would say these dimensions are ideal for a small colony.
Depends on your location and if they’re wild caught or captive bred. For captive bred here in Canada an unsexed baby currently goes for $200-$250 Canadian.
Hello, thank you for your answer, yes, it's a perfectly fine price now I live in Sweden, unfortunately there seems to be a shortage of breeders here, the closest breeder I managed to find is in Germany. With a little luck, I might be able to make some contacts during the reptile fair in Stockholm later this year.😊
Thanks for all the videos you make on the subject very educational 😊 when you have a new terrarium do you ever use exo terra background or do you make your own background for all your terrariums?
@@mattiasknorell I’m glad to hear the content has been helpful! Hopefully you’ll be able to find some soon. As for the background I do like doing my own DIY backgrounds, some species I do use the foam or cork backgrounds that you can buy but the tree skinks have sharp nails so I avoid the foam backgrounds with them.
@@RedsFaunaverse Thank you so much for responding! No, they don’t like any insects and I’ve tried dubia roaches, mealworms, super worms, wax worms, crickets, and hornworms. I ordered butter worms and soldier fly larva so maybe they’ll like those. I guess mine are just abnormally picky 😅
@@reganwashington8495 you could try tricking them by mixing the insects into the Pangea and making like a grub pie! You could also try restricting the Pangea for a while and seeing if they’ll be encouraged enough by the absolute absent of it that they have to eat what your giving them. If they’re being so difficult just make sure to switch up the different meal replacement powders and try giving them the ones with insects as well to make up for their picky appetite. Hope this might be helpful!
Depends on if they’re young or not. For adults I usually say 3 times a week. How much you give them depends on what you’re feeding them (some prey items are more filling than others). Usually I say start with a dozen crickets per feeding and over time you can gauge how much or how little they can eat and adjust the amount accordingly . Watch out for if they always want to eat though or else they’ll get a little chubby 😅
Thank you. I do need to do time stamps now that that’s a thing. But in case you want to know where I got the skinks from that information is before that time 😊
That would not be researching if that was the case. There is minimal research on these guys so yes you will find that a lot of sources are similar and say the same thing. Also it’s the the same reptile so of course my care and information should be somewhat similar to others. If you would like I can send you the links and resources I used for this video. But there are things in this video I wanted to go over that was not gone into depth in his or other videos online.
Video starts at 5:20 for anyone that wants to skip the intro :)
Well, if Clint's Reptiles didn't win me over on Emerald Tree Skinks, you sure did. So stinkin cute!

Thank you! Unfortunaltey no rule of thumb but for a pair id say a 24"x18"x36" is ideal and for 3-6 a 36"x18"x36" is good and thats what i'll be having soon for mine since i'm splitting up my colony a bit.
awesome video!
Thank you! ❤️
This was great! Thank you so much! Hoping I’ll be able to have a few one day 💚💚💚
Glad you enjoyed 🥰 Thanks for watching and hopefully one day!
Indonesia!
I just got one yesterday. Ran arcoss a breeder that had some and could not pass up the opportunity.
Thats amazing! So hard to find a breeder but hopefully in time they'll become more common.
Thank you so much
That was good timing mine will be delivered tomorrow lol
Yay I wish you luck!!! 💚
Do you know if you can find these anywhere in europe? I can´t seem to find any stores or breeders in my country or europe in general .-.
I’d say two foot is the minimum for sure but taller is better. It should do :)
I think I'm in love. Dear God
Me too! And the lizerds are cool also.. 😅
Just picked up a pair myself
Amazing! Best of luck!
They drink from the crested gecko water bowl if it’s up high.
Hi... thanks so much for your videos...
💚
Hey, I just discovered your channel, great content! Just wondering if these guys have ever bred for you/do you ever have babies available?
Thank you so much for watching! Last year and this year I have successfully bred these guys but I have a long wait list unfortunately and I only sell/ship in Canada.
I'd like to get in touch to ask some questions. I have a 1.2 pairing and I want to get your input on their behavior.
I'd love a couple of these guys but don't want to support wild caught stores. I'm not quite prepared to jump into breeding them either so for now I'll just have to wait. They're very interesting though, like an Abronia Graminea but a bit more docile.
Captive bred ones should be more readily available soon, I’ve seen some people have success so sit tight!
@@RedsFaunaverse Awesome! I'll look forward to it.
@@katiebug5273 agree, it can especially be overwhelming for new keepers with all the options.
@@RedsFaunaverse oh absolutely. Chain Pet store workers are generally very under educated and spread inaccurate info to new owners as well. Unfortunately it’s a sad cycle I see a lot.
@@katiebug5273 Don’t even get me started 😭
How often do you feed them. I'm curious because I'm thinking about getting a pair very soon 😄
Thanks
I feel so silly for not including the most basic of information but for babies I would say everyday to every other day depending on age but most that are older are good to bed fed about 3 times a week :)
@@RedsFaunaversethank you!! I was doing more research on them and realized wow I really have no idea how often you feed these guys 😂😂🦗
How do you treat the for parasites? Does it have to be done thru a vet?
Usually yes, through a fecal test and some medication that would help remove the parasites.
I just got babies. Do you have any advice for baby skink care? I can't find much out there for these guys.
Feed often, every other day I do for the babies I bred. I do a staple of crickets and some repashy in between.
@@RedsFaunaverse awesome, will do.
Thank you!
Can you keep just one? And if so what would be the tank size?
How does one treat the skinks for parasites? I just found out that my skinks are wild caught.
@@cupofjae usually you will have to get a parasite treatment from a vet. You can bring them in a stool sample for them to test as well.
Have you noticed any thing with these guys sneezing? I have a group they all seem to sneeze every once in a while
Personally I have not but I do know my fire skinks make that sneeze noise and it’s cause they get dirt in their nose and they try to just sneeze it out. So if your emeralds spend a lot of time in the substrate it could be just them sneezing out dirt. I’d also be mindful of the temperatures and that it’s not too cold. Hope this helps!
@@RedsFaunaverse have you had any lay eggs? I recently found one large egg on top of the soil. It's almost an inch long!
That's what she said
@@bongjamesbong00420 Not yet!!! I’m hoping I do soon though 🥺
I have a question I’m setting up a 75 gallon 48x18x21 what size colony would be ideal or should I look for another species?
My only concern is the height, the length is great but they would benefit from a lot more height with a tank that size. My tank is as tall as it is long. Another reptile species would probably enjoy that size enclosure more and it’s quite the nice size tank so you’ll have lots of other options to choose from :)
@@RedsFaunaverse was thinking that myself but I do have the extra large mesh chameleon cage I was also thinking about setting up again lol decisions decisions
I have acquired two groups are males typically larger or females?
Not always but they can be. I do find they tend to have more wider jaws/heads and come off a bit more bulky. I have two males and my one male isn’t as bulky as the other. The best way a lot of keepers have been able to tell is that yellow scale on their back heel. Odd but it seems accurate most of the time.
🤔 i have a black tree skink, are black tree skinks and emerald green tree skinks the same?
They are similar and I’d say their care is similar but not entirely the same. There is one black tree skink group on Facebook if you want to find out more information about them.
@@RedsFaunaverse oh ok thanks
Would an 8 x 8 x 8 work for these
If that’s it feet then yes! The bigger the better!
Sorry to bug you but what was the uvb/heat lamp combo called again?
It’s either the SolarGlow Mercury Vapour bulb you’re referring to or the Zoo Med ReptiSun LED UVB Terrarium Hood
@@RedsFaunaverse and you use only Zoo med right? It’s enough for them?
@@maria.mishina you don’t have to use zoomed but that is what I’m currently using
@@RedsFaunaverse I asked because I don’t understand if I buy UVB like your zoo med, need I buy heat lamp too?
@@maria.mishina Yes you would need the UVB and a heat light :)
Can I keep a pair of males together and how often do you feed them?
I personally wouldn’t recommend two males together as they might fight. In a bigger colony like mine where I have two males and three females is ok but for a pair I’d recommend two females or one male and one female. Adults I feed about 3 times a week :)
@@RedsFaunaverse Thank's alot
@@RedsFaunaverse Hey! I have an other question if you don't mind responding. Will a 24" by 18" by 24" terrarium work for a pair of these?
@@zy8462 I believe for a pair that would be a good bare minimum. In the video I said an 18x18x24 but after observing their behaviour I believe a little more width is suitable so the enclosure size you mention should be good for a pair
How did you go about treating the for parasites and what did you use?
How often do you feed them?
Is this the end enclosure for the 4 skinks?
Or need they a bigger one ?🦎💖
Bigger is always better and some re-arrangements have been made but I currently have three now in the 36x18x36 and another pair in a 3ftx2ftx2ft enclosure. I would say these dimensions are ideal for a small colony.
@@RedsFaunaverse Thank you 👍🦎
Hi, I am very interested in green tree skink, I wonder how much it cost to buy one?
Thank you so much for the help 😊❤️
This is an excellent video, informative, good audio and in general just well done!
Thank you so much! ❤️ That means so much to me 🥰
Pls pls tell me in which countries u can get to keep this skink
Pls and do tell me is it available in india
You should breed these guys!
I have emerald tree skinks as well and mine are only eating Pangea and baby food. Has anyone else experienced them being picky eaters?
Awe they don’t like crickets or any other insects? I might be able to give a few pointers, just curious how they react to other feeders.
How many times and how much of food should I feed 1 emerald tree skink
Depends on if they’re young or not. For adults I usually say 3 times a week. How much you give them depends on what you’re feeding them (some prey items are more filling than others). Usually I say start with a dozen crickets per feeding and over time you can gauge how much or how little they can eat and adjust the amount accordingly . Watch out for if they always want to eat though or else they’ll get a little chubby 😅

Thank you. I do need to do time stamps now that that’s a thing. But in case you want to know where I got the skinks from that information is before that time 😊
Can anyone send me the link of a breeder or reputable online retailer for these? I cant find them anywhere that doesn't look super sketchy
Hopefully this spring and summer will bring captive bred babies, not many people working with them at the moment. If you can find o e that’s amazing!
Does it bite tho
I do bite sometimes
Jesus her eyes lol
Redsfaunaverse, seems like you watched Clint's Reptiles. You are repeating 95% of what he says in his video. Good researching.
I will also encourage you to watch my Cat Gecko Care video since he doesn’t have one on that and I had that out before this care video :)
Jesus Christ your gorgeous
