    Is that a specialized extruded polystyrene detailing rock you can usually buy at a model making store or should I try to obtain my own through some other source?

    • @sliceoflifefilm
      @sliceoflifefilm  5 місяців тому +21

      Yes, this is a specialized detailing rock that's being made in only one place in the world. It's being made in a small town called "Rothenburg ob der Tauber" in Bavaria. I heard about it in the very secretive model making forum, so I went there to find the store where it's made. It's run by an old model builder called Günter. I stayed in his house above the model making store. He asked me to build something in front of him so that I would prove my worth, and that he could study my technique and produce a perfect stone for my model making needs. It took him around two weeks and at the end I was presented with the stone during a small spiritual ceremony. In one part of that ceremony I had to swear not to reveal the name of his store because he doesn't want to be overflown with orders. I paid 2700€ for my custom stone, but don't worry, you can use just a normal stone from your garden. It won't produce the same, perfect results as mine, but it will work. I wish you happy building, and as master Günter would say: "Lieber einen Stein in der Hand als in der Niere."

    • @dejangotic
      @dejangotic 5 місяців тому +3

      oh my that is insane! I have heard of that guy, years ago, but I had always taught it is just a funny story circling model making community... what an experience! kudos! I did not hear much about the stone ceremony but is it true he takes a single tooth from each one of his clients that go through the ceremony?

    • @sliceoflifefilm
      @sliceoflifefilm  5 місяців тому +7

      @@dejangotic Yes, well, you do understand that I can't really talk about it as the whole thing is very secretive and I did make an oath of silence. However, I can confirm that the tooth rumor is true. It's a part of ancient modelmaking tradition that was passed from one model builder to another all the way from ancient Greece. It was conceived by a Greek shipwright/modelbuilder Deinόpoiόs Sυρεrglυόs and it was believed the ritual enabled the conjurer to have temporary powerful magical skills for crafting models. The exact process for the ritual was unfortunately lost to time for thousands of years, but, in a lucky turn of events, old Günter was interested in alchemy from his young age and accidentally stumbled upon some documents about this Greek tradition in his local library. After many years of research and experiments he managed to recreate the exact process of the ritual. My tooth was the last one he needed and he now had all the ingredients to complete the ritual. I already said too much, but I will say that Günter's magical transition will take place at the end of the lunar equinox in 2027, and I suggest to have your eyes pointed at the skies above Bavaria at that time.

    7:13 one of my favourite tricks is to use potting soil to dirty up spaces. The grit makes stuff more like it’s actually dirty and clumpy

    I've been making miniature terrain for tabletop wargames for around 16 years. What you do (building miniatures for movies) is something I dreamed of doing. I had a small commission job to build a command deck of a spaceship in style with Star Trek but it is almost not visible in the final movie. Keep doing what you do!!! It is inspiring and very informative!!!

    • @sliceoflifefilm
      @sliceoflifefilm  5 місяців тому +1

      it was glue for tiles, or the grout used for filling gaps between tiles. Or you can mix plaster with sand. the pint is to have something a bit more rougher than plaster. ❤

    • @sliceoflifefilm
