He never even got a bolwer in net session like Robert's, holding, garner, marshal, lilee, Thomson, Pascoe, Hadley, botham, Willis, imran, sarfqrz, bakth, qadir, Bruce reid, akram

Gavaskar was a rare genius, his powers of concentration were supreme, and he had immense belief in his abilities. First to make 10,000 test runs people thought the record would never be broken, I don’t think there’s any other Batman you can call to be technically superior to Gavaskar including the likes of Dravid. So yeah he was the OG maestro and he remains gold.
Sachin was a different player, very different. He was a prodigy, his batting was an almost reversal of Gavaskar. Sachin was a natural born stroke-maker, his mind worked differently and his body moved differently, he wanted to score runs quickly, when he was young he wanted to hit a boundary every delivery and he wanted to hit them hard not gently. In one of the interviews he said he was a huge fan of Sunny and Viv and he wanted to combine the two and dare I say he probably is the best mix there has ever been of Gavaskar and Richards. Most people don’t realize how good Sachin’s defense really was because he wouldn’t defend for long periods and sooner rather than later his mind and body got into positions where he could make strokes and score boundaries which results and an added % of risk and chance of getting out. Sachin used to play outrageous shots, the shots that bowlers couldn’t believe and then he tamed it down as he matured so yeah two very different kinds of players. At times Sunny has played amazing stringing innings and some impossible innings that I don’t see anybody else playing surviving on an impossible wicket for a session and on the on the other hand I’ve seen Sachin bringing out the wrath on unplayable pitches against lethal bowlers and owning them so two true masters and genius of batting. What a privilege to be an Indian.

Prior to his tenure, Indians played a game of gentleness and good spirited losers. I was a great critique of his defensive nature of batting along with many others. Looking back in time, it was necessary for him to do so in order to bring up the Indian Cricket on par with the rest of the world. His innings with Dilip Sardesai in defeating the Calipso Kings in 1971 is legendary and will live in time for a long time. I lived through that and still dumbfounded looking back.

I am a fan of Sunil Manohar Gavaskar since he came to Pakistan for the very first time to play 3 test match series in the year 1978-79. I was 10 years old at that time. He missed his hundred with only 3 runs in Faisalabad in the first innings of the first test match.. I was so sad, more than Gavaskar himself. But what a Champion batsman he was !!! In the third test at Karachi (1978-79), he scored a century in each innings of the test match (111 & 137). Although India lost the test match and the series but Gavaskar had already prvoed what a Master batsman he was. He was a brave opener and accepted the challenges he faced. He faced all the famous fast bowlers of that time. Jeff Thompson and Dennis Lillee (Australia) in their peak times when they were bowling their fastest deliveries. Roberts, Holding, Croft, Garner, Marshall (West Indies) all bowling greats. Imran Khan (Pakistan) at his peak. Botham, Willis, Hendrick, Old, (England) at their best. Richard Hadlee (NZ) the all time best all rounder from New Zealand. Gavaskar's best test innings for me was his 221 against England in 1979 when India needed 439 to win and ended at 430-9 in the fourth innings. The Master accepted the challenge and it was a battle against time. There was not much time to scoe 439 in the fourth innings. India had to bat faster and also not to lose wickets in order to score huge 439. Gavaskar showed his best skills , going at a faster speed, scoring runs. When he was dismissed at 221, India had already scored 367 out of 439. 83.5% runs had already been scored then. Only 16.5% runs to be scored by the later batsmen but they could manage only 430 and the match ended in a draw. Gavaskar scored 774 runs in his debut series against West Indies in West Indies in only 4 tests. This 774 runs is a world record till now for the most runs scored in a debut series. Gavaskar scored senturies on all 5 Test grounds of Australia batting against Australia with bowlers like Lillee and Thompson. Remember speed of a delivery was used to measure in 1970s at the spot where the ball reaches the batsman after travelling the 22 yards distance betwen the bowler's stumps and the batsman's stumps. At that time, Jeff Thompson's average speed was 91 miles/hour and his fastest delivery was measured at 99 miles/hour. If the speed was measured that time (in 1970s) in the first yard when the ball leaves the bowlers hand (just like it is measured now in the time of Brett Lee and Shoaib Akhter), then Thompson's speed would be around 100 miles / hour on average and fastest would be 110 miles/ hour. Now guys, imagine this speed of the fastest bowler of the world (THompson) bowling to Sunil Gavaskar on Australian wickets. On the other side of Thompson, there was Dennis Lillee the greatest of his time. Gavaskar faced them all with great courage and excellence. A lot more can be written on Gavaskar. Finally, I want to inform you all that my date and month of birth is the same as Sunil Gavaskar's, i.e., 10th of July. I wish if I could celebrate his birthday and my birthday together some 10th July.. I would be the most happiest person in the world then. It would be like a dream come true. Meeting your favorite cricketer after 45 years time. HAILE GAVASKAR !!! 🙂

Appreciate your interest in a player before you were born and the research you put in the same. Yes, Gavaskar was arguably the best test opening batsman the world has seen. However, you missed his most important trait that separated him from the others who had equally good technique - his concentration. Gavaskar’s ability to focus and concentrate for session after session, for every single ball, was incredible. Those of us who saw him bat live would recollect how unwavering his concentration was. He would never let his guard down. In fact he’d take fresh guard (pun unintended) after every break/milestone/interference and continue on with his innings like it was a fresh one.
Also, you got the Bodyline reference wrong. Bodyline tactic, or fast leg theory as it was also called, was about targeting the batsman’s upper body, with balls aimed outside the line of the leg stump, while placing a ring of fielders on the leg side for the catch when the batsman defends awkwardly. It was devised by English team to contain the great Don Bradman, and was banned immediately, and much before Gavaskar even started his career. Not more than two fielders could be placed behind square in the leg side and umpires warned the bowlers if they even sense intimidatory bowling targeted at the body of the batsman. While the West Indian fast bowing attack of late seventies and eighties was lethal, they did not resort to Bodyline tactic. They bowled within the revised laws, their bouncers would rear up from even good lengths, but it wasn’t the intimidating leg side tactic of Bodyline.

Viv Richards was a destructive middle order batsman, and yes, he entertained, and took the game away from the opposition. Richards perhaps had a slightly better eye, but there's not much between them. Chappell and Gower, were stylish and graceful, and you'd pay money, I would as well, just to see them bat for an hour. Boycott not as talented, but he was all about perseverance and sheer bloody mindedness ....as for Viswanath, not in the same league, but still a fine player.

    • @bhaskarbasu3704

@sydmohe Sunil Gavaskar is not only the greatest opener of this universe since 1971 (I have not seen cricket before 70s), but also the pioneer of opening techniques of test batting. He must not be compared with any middle-order batters. The role of middle-orders are completely different from the openers. The openers have to play much more vital role than the following batters. Openers lay the foundation stone of the innings fighting against the brand new ball. Next batters build the innings on this foundation. So, Gavaskar must not be compared with Vivian Richards, Greg Chapell, David Gower, Gundappa Viswanath or Javed Miandad.

Your video brought back memories from a long time back. I believe it was 1967 when my father took me to the then Brabourne Stadium - I was 7. I think it was a Ranji trophy match between Bombay and Baroda….and Nari Contractor scored a century. It was in one of those matches that Bombay featured a new opener, Sunil Gavaskar. I remember him opening for Bombay with another dashing player, Ramnath Parker. Often they would be the first and second slip fielders as well.
Bombay would often run up a big total before tea on the first day and put pressure on the other team by taking quick wickets before close of play and they would often win based on the first innings lead rule. At one time I recall, they played Bangalore and tried the same trick after tea. Bangalore lost two quick wickets. And then a little short guy came to bat at 2-down. My dad told me he was a new player and would not last under the pressure. But…whenever the ball touched his bat, it seemed to magically accelerate like a bullet to the fence, and in no time he reached 50! His name was Gundappa Rao Vishvanath.
    Thank you for the memories.👍👍

If this is a tribute to Sunny, he deserves more of these:
    1. This thing about Gavaskar "played only for records" sounds like a stuck record. Was it so easy to face Imran, Hadlee, Thomson, Lillee, Holding, Roberts etc. and create records?! Wish there was just one more Indian batsman that time playing for records. We would beat every team in the world!
    2. His baiters always cite his 36 n.o. in the first ever world cup. Every player, even a legend, has highs and lows. Citing one bad inning or even a bad patch will not tarnish a scintillating career.
Gavaskar was an exceptionally good batsman in an era when players dropped out of test series at the thought of a speed demon on a green top! Gavaskar's mental make up was of a fighter who never reared away from a challenge. That remains.

He was the best Indian batsman ever . Period . The bowling attacks he faced and mastered in his time would have the paper tigers of today running for cover .

Gavaskar's technique was impecable. Sachin is nowhere close as far as the Little master's batting class is concerned.
He had mastered the batting technique of hitting the ball in the V all along the ground. His other class stroke was the front foot extra cover drive.
He was a treat to watch.
Absolutely no doubt about his class & temperament.

Sachin tendulkar just played for himself no where near as good as sunny Bhai tendulkar would not have been able to play in that era

We cannot compare players from pre helmet and post helmet days.Helmet does make a huge difference.
One thing I say having watched sunny from his debut..he never took a single blow on his body or head.Thdg shows his technical excellence.

Gavaskar was closer to Rahul Dravid than Tendulkar with his classic technique suited for the Test game. Like Rahul, he took a lot of time to figure out ODI with some of his best-attacking innings coming at a later time of his ODI career. Sachin started as a stroke maker who morphed into a grafter post-2004 Australian series. Even though I am a die-hard fan of Sachin Rahul was the best test player for India in the early 2000s while Sehwag with his attacking play was the best Test batsman in the late 2000s. Still saying all that none of them had the longevity Sachin had in the game.

Gavaskar was widely admired for his technique against fast bowling, with a particularly high average of 65.45 against the West Indies. He has the maximum no. of runs & centuries scored by a player against the brutal pace bowling attack of west indies (without wearing helmet) -2,749 runs & 13 centuries Gavaskar was the first Test cricket player to make over 10,000 runs. He has scored the highest runs (774) in a series as a debutant. Until Sachin broke his record he has the record of highest test centuries (34).

We still like today.
