As a result there are numerous fans of the series at Warhorse (including me), especially among designers and scripters who work in tandem to bring quests and game systems to life. There's quite a bit of Gothic's DNA in KCD ;-) Also you are apparently playing a visually modified version - 23:15 - That rain and wet effects seem suspicious. I remember it and that is not the 2001 original - 27:48 - Those water reflections certainly weren't there. - There is ambient occlusion. Visible well around you character 26:53. That wasn't in games till like 2008. - 27:53 - Those light rays are also something much newer. First notable example with this I recall is Tropico 3 from 2009
By the way, you were blue at the start, because you were too close to the magic barrier. That is also what killed you, it just isn't visible, because there are those rocks.
gothic 1 (and 2) actually where my first rpg´s i am 27 and a lifelong gamer. these games truly where ahead of its time. me and my childhood friends played this game (and the sequel even more) almost 24/7. this was elder scrolls before elder scrolls for us (or atleast before skyrim, we really didnt care much about morrowind and also gothic was actually a big name in germany, where i am from)
You are in for a treat of an RPG) A couple of hints based on this episode: Blocking doesnt work against creatures, only against other weapons. That blue lighting that killed you, was the magic barrier, you were on the border of it. Most creatures don't attack you straight away, they have a 'warning don't come closer' animation during which you can back off and they'll calm down, but if you persist or don't exit their 'territory', they'll attack you. You can move stacks of items if you hold SHift with Ctrl. You can get information on locations of the area(or important people) by just talking to even any 'random' non quest NPC, like Guards and Ghosts, so if you are ever lost, just talk to even nameless people. To open closed chest you need a combination and a lockpick. You had a lockpick but you needed to guess the combination by pressing left or right appropriate amount of times. Combinations to chest are something like this: left- left- right- right. There could be more 'lefts' or 'rights' and their order varies depending on the chest and its contents. But each chest has it's unique combination set, so they stay the same and don't 'reset' to a different combo each time you try (but you have to start combination from the beginning if u fail). You just need enough picks to eventually guess them and preferably high lockpicking skill, so picks don't break easily.
There is also a day/night cycle - people and animals sleeps at night (when a group of animals sleeps usually one of them is awake to protect group). Everything has a good reason in the world of gothic and it is explained in the game - 100% immersive. Animals can fight between each other (differenet species). When you will enter somebodys property, they will come after you with a weapon drawned warning you to leave but only if they see you. If you draw weapon in the old camp, people will aggro you warning you to hide your weapon. There are tons of dialogue options depending of your game progress and decision made, people till this day are unlocking never seen options in dialogue etc. in the vanilla game. You can basiclly roam the whole world freely from the start of the game. I also recommend to check the polish free mod to this game - Chronicles of Myrtana. That mod have full professional voice acting in polish version, whole new map, new quests and story. Its one of the best most ever made for any game. I love this game. Such a gem.
They are. I played the demo, when they were testing feedback to see if it's worth going ahead. It's familair, but everything about it is very, very different. It has a unique combat system that has a pretty steep learning curve, but I'm looking forward to the finished product 😍
Im sure some of those voices are by the guy who did Shadow Man. Looks like a brilliant classic RPG which I sadly did not get to play. I may try to get a hold of this and play it myself. EDIT: Just had a quick google and it is indeed Redd Pepper - the guy who voiced Shadowman!
About 5 years ago, I played through all the games I missed because I didn't have good enough PC as a young kid. Starting from Gothic I, II and III, whole Mass effect, Dark souls and many more. Gothic is still a great game and I can only recommend it, the only thing I would sudgest is that you really go I, II and then III, because otherwise it's much harder to play (because you get used to better mechanics).

You will see, it's guiet the same kind of game when it comes to credibility. Btw: turn off the English language. It sucks ass. Play it in German with English subtitles.
One of my all-time favourite games! Gothic 2 is even better! They go massively downhill after that, sadly. Same is true with Risen (same team and very, very similar game). First is great (ending... not so much, as the final weapon makes your playthrough style redundant) but the sequels are all pretty poor.

One of the best RPGs ever. I liked it better that Gothic 2. I also tried Gothic 3, but got bored and did not finished it. Never tried the next games of that team.
It didn't looked like that back then. It's clearly modded with dx11 shaders, SSAO and shadowmapping. It didn't had specular reflections in rain or real time shadows. Just faked radiosity under npcs.
It has big Wizardry 8 vibes with the camera, movement etc., always loved Gothic! (Wizardry 8 is worth a good play if you ever get bored and find it on GOG; huge and beautiful game but your choice of 'personalities' for your party affects things hugely in-game in terms of making it fun and immersive. There's a choice of something like 36 different personalities and voices you can assign to each party member, and they all react differently to one another and the rest of the world around you. One of the 'intellectual' personalities might clash with one of the pious personalities, so if you have them both in your party, they might just start arguing. Another might try to break up the argument, but another might try to egg them on so they can steal from the loser's body...must have played the game through at least 40, 50 times since 2001, and every time it's a different experience with the different personalities. Plus of course there's about a billion different classes, so you can try it over again in a host of different play styles, planning for future attempts...)
Gothic series belongs to best of my rpg list, finished all piranha bites games all kind of follow the heritage of Gothic. At this moment playing and streaming(sirdoenny) new mod The Chronicles of Myrtana just released which is kind of prequel to Gothic 1.
Man, I can't wait for the remake, I love the original game(s) so much but trying to convince anyone from today's age to play through them is nearly impossible due to how outdated it is.
I really don't know if I should say this, but ehh there's a nice way to get a nice starting point early on in the game financially... Almost feels like cheating. Anyway, you can loot the weapon smith's chest in the old camp. Smith everything into a sword ans sell the lot for a few thousand ore. This should help you get some decent stuff ;)
With a little patience if you don't want to steal anything you can buy steel for 50 ore and make a sword you can sell for 60 ore. You can basically get infinite money that way. And a pretty good beginner sword as well.
I give you one important tip, play this game in German with English Text and Subtitle. The German Voice Acting is so much better than the horrible English Voice Action. Realy Gothic 1 has one of the best German Voice Acting in Games on this time.
It really wasn't actually. Part of the history of gothic 1 was that they wanted to make a more simplistic rpg but they absolutely overchew with their first game in terms of ideas and most of the content in the game was created in the last 6 months of development if we believe the devs that are pretty chatty in the german community. For example in old camp you can hide in a barrel that serves no purpose hinting on possible dropped gameplay mechanics
Years ago I had in my hands two games: Gothic 1 and Morrowind. To that moment, never played an RPG before. I tried Gothic but the control were so weird.... I gived up... Then I change to Morrowind and that was love at first sight! (have you played Morrowind, Roxy? is my fav Elder Scrolls game)
Just to be clear, you're playing a modded version of this game. It looks like you're using the DX11 renderer, because the original does not have such fancy lighting and rain effects.

Risen 2 and 3 are just a different style from Gothic and Risen 1, not worse in my opinion. I enjoyed them as much as all their predecessors.

When you are close to magical bariere, you start shining blue and if you crossed bariere (2:10) lightning is kill you. :)

You can lock onto a target by pressing left click. Then you don't have to press ctrl.
Play it with both hands, press CTRL and the arrow keys. Plays muuuuuch better than with CTRL and WASD.

You should use the arrow keys, not WASD. There is no need to use the mouse at all in this game.
