I just pressed the copper into the wood with finger pressure. They fit into the holes super well and are held in by friction. I'm not permanently installing them because they might rust over time and I want to be able to polish and/or replace them

Did you tap the wire into the wood or just finger pressure? and/or fix it in place with something (drop of epoxy in the holes)?
