@@L72Chevelle427 Yeah, the full size cars are definitely scale tippers...they need a lot more power and gearing to overcome the weight difference...still got the W, though!
Some of you guys need to learn terminology when it comes to discussing gear ratio's: "steeper" or "taller" gearing is LOWER in numbers, such as the GTX. Lower gear numbers means higher top speeds NOT suited for drag racing. HIGHER numbers such as 4:10 to 1 & 4:56 to 1 are GEARED LOWER, which gives the engine easier ability to rev quicker for drag racing, but they lose top end speed. You will not be "cruising along" on the interstate at 120 mph with 4:10 to 1 and 4:56 to 1 gears without running the engine to death at high rpm's. So with the gearing this GTX has, it could run higher speeds on the highway much easier than this COPO Camaro. But conversely, we all see what happens on the drag strip.
@@Uptown59 No problem.......you're very welcome. Love that GTX. One of my favorite car's of all time. The Impala, beautiful. The '67 and '61 Impala's are two of the best looking Impala's from the sixties. Great race.
I disagree. Although dad had a beautiful black with red accents and interior '61 SS which was powered by a screaming 4 speed, tri-power 348, when I got a good look over of a '62 with the exact same color combo I remembered of dad's, I fell in love with it. Up until that time I had always wanted a '61 just like I remembered from my youth, I just had to switch years for an impala one year newer.
Best looking Impala out of the series! Black makes it ever cooler. Now ... can I gripe for a moment? Chevrolet for some reason puts that huge motor in there and expects it to breath with that little choked off air cleaner snorkel? I never did understand that. The over size filter of course fixes that prob. Too, many times they would install single exhaust unless duals were ordered and an open rear end unless a limited slip was ordered.... I found this out the hard way back in the day. Great car, I'd love to have one. The GTX is cool too, much lighter, a better gear would help and 68 was the year for sure!
For such pedestrian rear gears, the Mopar absolutely rips. Quite an impressive performance! That said, I’m partial to any full-size car with a manual, so I’ll take the SS ❤️
Imagine if that Plymouth had the 3.90 posi ? She would beat that Chevy. For a 4 speed stick in that Chevy, that driver knew what he was doing for sure. He was quick on the clutch.
There’s nothing that will make a more Dramatic difference in 1/4 mile performance for a showroom stock car than dropping the gear ratio by 50 To 75 points. It will feel like a different car.
Yes, the SS427 was its own model. It was code Z24, which got you the special domed hood with chrome ornament in the center, plus its own emblems. Even though it was based on the Impala body, it wasn't an Impala. Although most people would call it an Impala, the name "Impala" does not appear on an SS427 anywhere. There are only SS427 and Chevrolet badges on it. Even in the advertising, you'll see the car called an SS427, and not an Impala SS. So, an SS427 is technically different from an Impala SS. The Impala SS had dfferent emblems that said "Impala SS". And you could get an Impala SS with a 427, so that's what the video car is. Also, the SS427 engine did not make more HP than the 427 in an Impala SS. In 67, only the 385hp 427 was available for the full size cars. Only the Corvette got the higher HP 427's.

Yeah, In 1980 at 17, I had the opportunity to buy '69 Chevelle with an L-78 and 4 speed for $400. I passed on it with not clue what I was letting slip through my fingers just because it was going to take a little more work than I was willing to put in a car at the time. Yes, you could get an Impala SS with any of the engines that were available for a full size Chevrolet, from a 6 cylinder to the 385 hp 427. So, you could have an Impala SS with a 427, without having to the buy an SS427. It'll have Turbo Jet 427 emblems on the front fenders, and an Impala SS emblem in the grille, as seen in the video. The SS427 had different fender emblems, specific to a an SS427, and an SS427 emblem in the center of the grille. The SS427 was supposed to be its own model, and didn't have the name "Impala" on it anywhere.

Back in the day I owned 30 impalas and drag raced every one at the same time. I ran a best of 6 seconds in the 1/4. Trust me, I know everything about cars because I was alive back then. You, yeah you, you have a tiny weenie if you disagree with anything I've said. I'd also like to complain about every random thing I can about this video. And just so C&Z knows, if he doesn't change everything to my liking I am threatening to LEAVE!!!
Ha funny
Wow lots of spare time on your hands Dawg booty
Huh. I remembered you having 31 ?? WTF?
Wassup dawg???? 😁
Not funny, sorry, were any of your impalas 4spd cars??? How about a 6 cylinder, 6spd with 3.08 gears now THAT would be a 1/4 mile sleeper, meaning you could take a nap, and shut down every hemi around!!!
I had a 68 GTX ,had to sell it to get married the 1st time ,I sure miss the car 😁
more than your first wife ,I take it? :-)
Two of my favorites love em.
Nothing better than watching factory cars racing.
This Impala is a full second quicker in the E.T. and about 10 MPH higher in top speed than figures achieved in original test reports.
GTX needs a lower axle ratio.
Imagine if that Plymouth had the 3.90 posi ? She would beat that Chevy. For a 4 speed stick in that Chevy, that driver knew what he was doing for sure. He was quick on the clutch.
Even a 3:91 gear in the GTX would have really made it close
I'm sure. Did you catch that while the hp peak was shown to be 4600 rpm, the tach redline was set at 6000?
With a 3:91 gear I don't think it would have been close at all.
I had a 66 impala 396 it had a incredible ride I love impala's it had a green driver side fender we called it the Barrettamoble
It's gotta be the gears. That GTX should have stepped out on that impala. Put some 4.10s or even 3.73s behind that 440 then I want to see a rematch.
There’s nothing that will make a more Dramatic difference in 1/4 mile performance for a showroom stock car than dropping the gear ratio by 50 To 75 points. It will feel like a different car.
Sure looks like a 1968 GTX with those circle marker lights.
That 67 impala was just a beautiful car.
Wait...the SS427 (67) was a model all its own?Different than the Impala 427? I never knew that. But why? The SS427 IS an Impala!
It had special trim, especially badass hood scoops, plus more HP.
This was a really good and fair race with the Heavy Impala with the big block and low gears vs the 440 Mopar with the taller gears.
4.56 gears in the Impala...Holy Crapola
Imagine the rpm at the finish line
@@lookielou843 6400 as it breaks the beam at finish. With the 1.64 1st gear it is perfect. Had a 4:10 in it for a few races.
@@Crashbboxx67 curious, what was the e.t. and mph with the 4.10 gears?
@@rickstout2458 I changed to a wide ratio trans 2.64 1st gear same build I changed to the 4.56 . The 2.20 close ratio with 4.10 launch was Identical but rpm at finsh beam was 5900 to 6000. Was leaving some on the table.
This was one of the best races I've seen on this channel!
Impalas are so unique. Every should enjoy them. I did!!!
Take out the red lights and the Implala went 3 for 3 based on time alone.. I'm surprised/not surprised
These cars are so close that the races were very competitive.
3.91 gears vs 3.23?? The race was already over before it was run.
Bring back the narrator.
He needs a job as much as anyone.
Yeah I noticed he hasn't been doing them in the last few uploads, and isn't the same without him

@@jexmarro9 sensitive......Interesting comment from a guy who cries all over this video because some dude is no longer explaining the cars!! HA! Why are you so obsessed with hearing his voice?? Its because you are a SIMP
That was a Great race.
Damn, even adjusting the inflation the impala is cheaper than today’s equivalents (mustang, camaro Challenger etc)
True, but also more technology now and safety features
These cars are pretty much even. 427 vs 440...i call it a tie. I love them both.
These 2 were quite evenly matched
I'm surprised the impala was able to keep up with the GTX considering all the specs were in the Mopars favor. The only thing they don't talk about is wind clearance drag. You can tell just by looking the Impala wins that one. Hmmm
I had a chance to buy a 69 GTX but passed it up because it was green lol. Buy was I stupid. It had a 440 and factory line locks. I already had my R/T Challenger Premium and a 63 dart gt. But I could have bought it for $2000 back in 1990. It had slotted mags too. It didn't know anything about the gtx then and didn't want a green car lol. Cool old cars kinda rare too.
That would have been a great car to buy, but I hear ya...some of those Mopar greens from back in the day were pretty ugly!
If I had the money I could have had a 70 GTX for $5000 back in 1995. It was blue with an orange hood but the engine had recently been rebuilt and it was in really good condition. 20/20 hindsight, sigh!
Yeah, In 1980 at 17, I had the opportunity to buy '69 Chevelle with an L-78 and 4 speed for $400. I passed on it with not clue what I was letting slip through my fingers just because it was going to take a little more work than I was willing to put in a car at the time. I've had four chevelles since and none have measured up to what that one could have been.
a good friend bought a 67 ss427 new. Best he ever did was 13.85 with stock 3.23 gears. (4 speed) I didn't know you could get an Impala SS427. Thought they were all badged just SS427. Wish I could find that car and buy it.
@@grand73am good to know
Great American cars. Makes you wanna get one. Take a 71 Camaro SS
Sorry to go off topic, but any updates on your Chevelle?
Great video
I bought a GTX new in 1968 paid $3700,green with a black vinyl top,man did the ladies love that car lol.
Ladies back then had a low standard
I also owned a 69 Vette Lemans blue 350-300 hp,I bought it in 1971 with 11,000 miles on it for $3,700,do you think they liked that? Our you even old enough to know what woman standards were in 1968? I
doubt it very much.
@@kjsandoli2692 Time to stop living in the 60s you sad sack. Here's some advice for the future: no one is impressed with cars you've owned.
@@scottrandel7284 fuck you punk, you probably dont even own a car asshole!
The GTX needs a stick to achieve its best performance. No way the Chevy weighing 4,400 lbs should win in a race with a car lighter by like 600 lbs., all other things being equal, and they were here.
very nice racing!
TOOK MY CHEVY TO THE LEVY BUT THE LEVY WAS DRY,AND GOOD OLE BOYS WAS DRINKIN WHISKY AND RYE.......BUT MY CHEVY NEVER DIED!!!!!!!
Thanks for the video
Yup.....I Lov'm Both BUT That Impala is Just Fuckin' Beautiful in EVERY Respect.

What a great race, love those full size muscle cars & there fast back bodies.
Both cars are gorgeous & it came down to the wire.
Is that a L36 in the Impala, can someone please confirm.
That Impala makes me want to buy my friends.

So it's a SS Impala not a SS 427 Impala.
Alot of people get them confused, love those fullsize Muscle Cars ☺
street gears compared to strip gears?????????
Love that Chevy. That's alot of Fastback!
Overall a close race
How much did they pay the GTX driver to throw the race?
He had a quicker e.t. each round. Unless the Impala ran closer to the first round e.t., the GTX just might have won the next round.
Lol
Gtx had a stock 3:23 gear, which wasn't quite enough for the 1/4 mile.
Impala probably didn't come stock with a 4:56 gear.
If I only won the lottery 🤔 I can wish in one hand and something else in the other hand, which will fill faster😂
The gtx had a rear end that needs to be changed for 1/4 mile .it's rear end is for higher longer speeds
I’ll be back when the funny man comes back !!!!!
Both awesome
