2:08 "we're going to set it all the way soft, turning it counterclockwise" the then guy proceeds to turn it CLOCKWISE. Which direction is correct to soften the ride? I'm only asking because I don't want it to be a fiasco messing with my bike and to expedite the process. Seriously, please help.
So if you turn it clockwise all the way for softest ride, will it stop so you don't go to far? Then it's 5 full turns counterclockwise for stiffest ride right?
From the video pic in the beginning of the video, you are saying to preload with the spanner wrench counterclockwise. Looks like clockwise to me. FROM the pic, counterclockwise should be going left to right. Please advise.
From other videos I've watched the preload is set clockwise. Later in this video he contradicts himself as well. First you should turn clockwise until stops then counter clockwise to set according to your weight. Add passenger weight as well if 2up.
It looks he was saying one thing and doing another still pretty confused and dont have the manual looks like I got the same info you did out of this video
this gave me the info I was looking for and could not find elsewhere --what the preload adjustment range is for the 422's (5 turns to full pre-load). Thanks.
to adjust the 422 pre load you turn counter clockwise to tighten or raise the pre load and clock wise to loosen what this mechanic said is wrong. actually he it wrong and right at the beginning he said it wrong and then almost 4 min into the video he said it correctly
+HillCloathing Thank you, lol, I'm like WTF, had my old wrench install a pair of these puppies on my 92 ST & All I need is to adjust the ride height, she's low & I dragged my floorboards RIGHT in front of a statie yesterday turning at an intersection. I can no longer get my craftsman bike lift under her also, no good. Love the shocks, just ride height too low.
I'm in the same situation you two are. WTF is the right direction? I believe that the shocks work opposite of what you'd expect. I think during debound the shocks move out, not in like most shocks. Fuck, this is killing me, my '04 texas chopper with my 250lbs ass on it is just a true sled. I can barely take a turn without the kickstand or my frame dragging.
Are those rear shock bolt washers supposed to have a bit of slop? I know they are shoulder bolts but have seen other bikes where those washers are loose and the bolt is tight.
if you turn the spanner disc in (clockwise) does it not compress the spring inside ? if the spring is compressed more the ride would be stiffer, would it not ?
Clockwise will soften the ride letting tension off the inner spring. The shock on my Buell X1 lightning has the same concept. It's a expansion type of shock/spring combo compared to an compression type.
My 422 came with the adjustment all the way clockwise... the ride is incredibly stiff, to the point I wanted to return them... Does this mean that less preload is actually harder? If it’s softer why it feels super hard when taking pot holes. From what I understand now, when you turn it clockwise you are compressing the internal spring it makes sense this would make the ride harder because the shock works holding the expansion not holding the contraction ?
Never mind... I found out that clockwise in softail Evo models is softer ride less preload. The shock in evo softails have the adjuster plate facing rear of bike and on newer models it’s on the front. The counterclockwise is actually harder, guessing that these shocks are less softer than OEM
According to the Doc ccw stiffens preload and cw softens it no matter how you look at you dont get much suspension under there man I wish I would have known this before I got this bike pre 2017 I dont think any HD models have very credible suspention just my opinion
Hey Joe or anyone in the know, would these 422's be suitable for my custom prostreet? its quite long with a fat rear end, but my standard harley shocks apparantly packed in on me. I need a replacement which wont break the bank.
+Tom Dewsbury - Reply from www.wildsteedworx.com/ So it sounds like he now has a passenger and his front end gets squirrely from the extra weight. I would start with rear shock adjustment, if possible, or replacement with quality shocks. Depending on the mileage on the front forks I would suspect they also need to rebuild their forks and put in fresh oil. In some situations they may need a front steering stabilizer.
This was a great help to adjust my shocks for a softer ride.

How do you know how many turns you should be making?
Great infomation video, thank you from down under

Curtis is one of the few motorcycle mechanics I would let work on my bike!
I have a 07 Big dog / Bull Dog. What type of suspension shocks do recommend?
to adjust the 422 pre load you turn counter clockwise to tighten or raise the pre load
and clock wise to loosen what this mechanic said is wrong.

Counterclockwise releases the tension , so clockwise stiffens per video by Delboys Garage. Can I get a reply?

he's adjusting clock wise
exactly

very helpful and informative
Thank you helped big time /// Semper fi Andy
you're welcome!
did he say counterclockwise? what am i missing
Toby Leroux yep he has gone clockwise and therefore harder
But you are going clockwise you said counter clock wise is softer. So why are you going to wrong way.
Nice confusing info...:/
Counting 1/2 turns only turning it 1/4 turn at a time.. clock wise .. um counter clockwise ummmmm duhhhh
