    DESCRIPTION
    I field test the real-world performance of the Starlink Mini's built-in router, testing multiple distances and obstructions. How does it work 100 and 200 feet from camp? How does it work with a vehicle in the way? How does it work inside of a truck camper? Watch this video to see how the Starlink Mini's router performs under these conditions while downloading and watching videos.

    My fiber network at the house went down recently for about 18 hours, so I figured I'd use my Mini to see if we could get by with it as an emergency backup. I set it up about 25 feet from the house and managed to get a strong signal inside...enough to run two desktop computers, several iPhones, and HD television to watch college bowl games all day long without the need for an external router. Bought the Mini for camping and photo excursions, but its nice to know that it can double as a backup if needed at home. Very impressed with it.

    My findings were similar. I was camping in a fairly dense Pinion Pine "Pygmy Forest" and was picking up the mini from roughly 200' away. This is my first foray into the Starlink club and so far, it's been a game changer. My wife who often stays home can now reach me 24/7 and leaving the Mini powered up finds it doesn't hardly use any gigabytes when idle. I'm on the Roam 50 plan so that right there is important. It also uses about 1.2 to 1.6 amp hours so leaving it on overnight doesn't drain my batteries much. I have installed a 12v to 24v upconverter and it powers up the Mini using the 15m OEM Starlink cable just fine.

    I'm considering the mini for 2 main purposes. first is at an off grid cabin (have solar power) that I frequent about 4-5 days/month. second, as a sort of back up for my main residence (tmobile 5G) in case SHTF while at home (have some portable solar power capabilities to power it if need be). I think it is worth the $50/month and initial unit cost.

    An interesting thing that I've found when installing on my vehicles. I've placed my mini under my fiberglass roof of my Jeep. It made no discernable difference to me. You may find you could semi permanentky mount it in your camper with the ability to easily remove it from it's location if truly mobile is needed.

    Nice but maybe you could do a video on what is the best alternative to relocate the Starlink mini into a clearing that maybe 100 - 200 feet from your truck and how to power it while trying to receive the signal at your camper. And is it worth the effort to relocate the mini into a clearing verses putting up with the loss of signal strength in a restricted sky environment? Thanks

      Yes, the Starlink Mini supports disabling the internal router and using an external 3rd part or Starlink router.

    • @banthaoverland
      @banthaoverland  3 місяці тому +1

      I've certainly done two Zoom calls at the same time. But I haven't tested it beyond that. My guess is that beyond 2 streaming use cases at moderate quality it could start to be an issue. It's a good idea for another video with more in-depth testing.

      I stopped at 200 as I didn’t see myself trying to use it further than that away from camp. I’m normally using it in my truck camper or around damp. But it’d be interesting to test further distances and obstructions for sure.

    One thing to point out, it looked like you had cellular service. Do you think that had any impact on your results?

    • @banthaoverland
      @banthaoverland  3 місяці тому

      That's a good question. Since making this video, I have learned about the WiFi Assist setting on iOS (support.apple.com/en-us/102228) to "to automatically switch to cellular when you have a poor Wi-Fi connection". It was enabled for this comparison but ideally should have been disabled. That said, it was enabled for both tests so would have had a similar impact. Based on my experience using Starlink in areas without cell coverage, I've experienced similar testing results - the Standard has more potential bandwidth but for our needs (2 people) the Mini has been doing fine. That said, there are times when I wish my 6GB 4K UA-cam video would upload faster but not sure I'm willing ti switch back to the Standard just for that yet.

  • @appala
    @appala 2 місяці тому +1

    While most of the test looks good, might I suggest turning off the cellular as you seem to have a strong signal on your phone with 3+ bars. Iphones can route the request via cellular when it determines that wifi is weaker than cellular. Not saying that happened in your case. Just to remove a variable.

      We've mostly used it with 2-3 people / devices at the same time. We'll be doing some additional field testing on a trip with more friends. You could lookup the router specs, but I wouldn't think there should be an issue connecting a few dozen devices. It's really about how much concurrent bandwidth you need.

  • @jkinney5
    @jkinney5 Місяць тому +1

    Probably a dumb question, but I don’t understand how the bandwidth between the Starlink and the satellites can be so much lower than between the Starlink and your phone. Wouldn’t the Starlink-satellite bandwidth set a ceiling for the Starlink-device bandwidth?

    • @JustDItY
      @JustDItY Місяць тому

      Yes, and why did the bandwidth between the Starlink and the satellites drop so far below the Starlink-device bandwidth when he moves away? Confusing.

    Question about the required view to the sky:
    Will the mini work in a campsite with a much smaller view of the sky?
    You were in a field with an open view of the sky, I frequent sites that only have an approximate 30’ by 50’ opening in the tree canopy.
    So I would need to point the mini virtually straight up to see a small portion of the sky. Does it work at all in that capacity?

    • @banthaoverland
      @banthaoverland  3 місяці тому +1

      Check out this video ua-cam.com/video/D01Ir5ISUK8/v-deo.html. I'll also be doing another video with more in-depth example of different obstructions. That said, having a smaller opening will make it more challenging, either requiring a few adjustments or having an intermittent connection (working, not working, working, not working).
