That's genuinely one of my favorite scenes in the book. Yangchen's such a mom, the best mom. We see it with how kind she is to Aang (before she shatters his dreams), seeing that he's a gentle spirit, and se see it in SoK when she just allows Kyoshi to cry and comforts her.

I guess the author takes Korean culture as an inspiration for Kyoshi era Fire Nation. Other names of Korean origin include Heiran, Rangi's mother and Chaejin, half-brother of Fire Lord Zoryu.
I'm still reading the 2nd book so glad to see we're going to see some of Yangchen. Right now after hearing how her decision affected Kuruk I'm really not liking her right now. Hopefully that'll change.

not much of a fan of gay couples since i am straight but the difference between korra asami and kyoshi rangi is that they at least bothered to write a believable relationship story and not some weird forced gay check box in the last minute ,seriously korra and asami barely talked to each other throughout the show and before the last season it was mostly just plot and the dumbass love triangle with mako. with kyoshi and rangi i can believe it since they have interaction and develop it and for once it isnt only carried by fan fiction writers
