After I left the cinema, having seen URGH!, I went to three different record stores until I found some Wall of Voodoo. That song just blew me away and, 40 years later, I still love it.
Absolutely. Nothing else sounds like it. I've been fortunate to see Stan Ridgway a few times and even chat with him briefly. Very cool guy. Funny as hell.@@RetroKingOG
Ummm I. Bought the soundtrack and ... not sure if you knew that... Variety is a local publication. Where I was...then. That flounder is a throwback "through it back" in flissssshrea
what this hasnt been remastered and released is truly a mystery. Back in the day getting a copy of this on VHS was a treat. Was my first introduction to the Cramps, the Police and tons of other bands that you would never have otherwise heard of.
@@hiredgunscotty yes it's crazy. so much crap is remastered, It's really weird this gem did not attract the attention of anyone willing to give it new light. Anyway, I have it on a VHS recorded from the TV. Back then I've been looking for an original VHS for a long time without success. Luckily, recently I found a very good copy of the vinyl in a second-hand shop in Warsaw (!). I used to watch it with my best friend again and again and again :)
Hahaha!!! Dude I crack up every time thinking I’m the only one thinking it’s hysterical. I’m sure he was being so sincere cause it’s true but funny nonetheless. Glad to see this comment 😂
This song is really great, Wall of Voodoo was a so underrated band back in the early 80s. Urgh a Music War is a great statement of the punk, post punk and new wave era.
Saw them in 82 or so. They were supposed to open for the Stranglers, but scheduling difficulties came up and they ended up playing this bar called "Larry's Hideaway" in Toronto. Held about 150 people. One of the best shows I've ever seen in my life, and I've seen plenty.
i always liked last minute changes to shows and recognizing people from earlier on the way and shouting directions to the second last minute venue to another car or across the street. yknow because they werent from the same parts.
saw WOV in Atlanta during 1983...they sold out both nights...best show I have ever seen followed by The Pyschedelic Furs 1982, and Cheap Trick 1978...everything eles afterwards fizzled out in comparison...
Amazing. I forgot how cool this song / band (and film) were. I haven't heard this since I saw this film in a little art house theater when the film came out.
everybody is asking why don't they make music like this anymore and other common comment.. why don't we go out and do great music great again instead of just sitting down not doing nothing
Music like this will never be made again mostly due to the fact that this music was the result of time it was made. The cultural and political moments of the time are reflected in the music, we cannot recreate that. It's in the past, all we can do is listen and enjoy the music created from this time period. This new wave/post-punk music is a time capsule in a way, because Stan Ridgway and his mates created their music as a result of their own influences and the technologies of the time. I do remember when this was new, I still have the original album(s) - it was a 2-record set. My sister got it for me for Christmas in 1983 or 1984. I'm not hearing the same originality of music today, maybe that is why there is so much nostalgia in our pop culture these days.
I first saw them at the US Festival in 1983. Many great bands that day, day 1. I was impressed by this band. I was stationed at Camp Pendleton at the time, but with a month left for discharge.
Stan happily autographed my stuff (at my request) -"You can't tell me what to do." Whattaboutamensch! P.S. MarcMoreland'sSecretWeaponWasStackedFourthsDon'tTell-S-h-h-h!"
Bernie Lomax its nice to hear something else, I was only 11 when this came out. They weren't marketed heavily where I grew up, but the older kids had probably heard of them.
I came here to see if I'd feel any different about WOV than I did back '81. I had left Chicago and was livin on the beach in southern CA. I met this chick named Laura who had left a bad relationship in NY and we were hangin out quite a bit together. One day she tells me she bought two tickets to see Oingo Boingo and Wall of Voodoo at this small theatre in Santa Barbara. I'd never heard of either band. Well, we went. And it was the worst show I'd ever attended. Everyone else loved it, but I clearly didn't get it at the time. Now I'm checkin it out again. And I have to say, I still don't get it. Haha! Oh well. Different strokes and all that...
I am watching, listening, and trying desperately to understand. I am with you, and probably was with you in spirit back in the day too. This is...... something!

That album Dark continent is a weird masterpiece.
Absolutely. Nothing else sounds like it. I've been fortunate to see Stan Ridgway a few times and even chat with him briefly. Very cool guy. Funny as hell.@@RetroKingOG
You've seen URGH! at the theaters? OMFG!
Ummm I. Bought the soundtrack and ... not sure if you knew that... Variety is a local publication. Where I was...then. That flounder is a throwback "through it back" in flissssshrea
Marc Moreland. Best post-punk surfadelic guitarist. RIP brother. Fortunate to have seen them a couple times.
Agreed, way underrated, did some fantastic playing on their albums, he and Billy Zoom are the best west coast punk New wave guitarists from that era
@@nullvoid244 For sure, and Zoom is still rockin. First saw X at a midnight show at the Country Club in Reseda in October ‘81.
urgh! is the best rock documentary ever

decline was good.
No that title belongs to This Is Spinal Tap. :)

That look Stan gives the crowd after "they don't care about you anyhow"... haha!

"Telephone call for Wall of Voodoo." "Dark Continent" is a stellar piece of post-punk from start-to-finish!
Gotta love the perfect execution on the triangle by Joe!! :-)
But they don't care about him anyhow. . . .
1980. I was the age of many in that crowd. I would give everything I own to go back and enjoy this music for the first time
Wow..no joke, this is a fairly profound statement. As I probably would do the same.
Must’ve been great to be in your 20’s or 30’s during the 80s era I wish I was was an adult back than. 20’s in the 2020’s is terrible
Don't feel bad. I was there for both nights of Urgh! - still have my stubs. I don't remember a thing ...
i love that keyboard man. hes great.
Hey look! It’s good music!! Haven’t heard this on the radio in years!!!!

Best song ever. Underrated as hell.
The album is underrated; Dark continent had to be one of the first post punk albums.
glad my college days were in this era. voodoo, Boingo, the clash were the best.
They were underrated.
Most of these bands are underrated.
You're right
absolutely. Weird, unique sound and presentation.
To say the least...
And that’s an understatement.

Stan the man❤
Wish I saw them in the early 80's with Ridgway...saw them with Andy Prieboy at UC Riverside in the late 80's though. Totally original, great band!
This was my first exposure to WOV and i still listen to Ridgway today
Holy shit, I have the album set on vinyl. It's in a box, but I know I still have it.
At the beginning of the video they're at the Santa Monica beach pier!
I remember this band back in the day!
Good memories!
I love this song
A cool bass line song!
This is the best stereo upload of this i've heard. And i love that you've included the beginning with the phone call. Thank You !!
LOVED Urgh! Loved the 80s💌
Amazing.

Heriberto Gaytan there is good stuff
MAKE MUSIC GREAT AGAIN
Why should i make music like in the 80s as old fart?
I have no idea why Urgh! popped in my head tonight, but thank you for giving me a place.
WOV has aged WELL.
What this song needs is more triangle. And he really needs to explore the stage with that triangle.
I first saw them at the US Festival in 1983. Many great bands that day, day 1. I was impressed by this band. I was stationed at Camp Pendleton at the time, but with a month left for discharge.
this is hilarious, the whole thing.
why don't they make music this good anymore
They do, just you are not going to watch it.
Mark Harris sign of the time(s)
Love this song. Great Band, the Epitome of Punk.
Reminds me of split enz….man they were good!
These were the coolest guys in the biz
I loved them, met them at an after hours at the Paradise in Boston. Hi Chas, just in case you see this. Lol
This song is hard but clean. Its hardcore without being hardcore.
Génial, merci merci!
I love the one dude in the audience bopping away! with his mustache! lol!!!
Wall of Voodoo, Dead Kennedys, Black Flag, California was top of its game then.
Today is just an empty shell of what it was

From URGH! A Music War, Santa Monica Civic
R.I.P. Samo Civic.
This song is supposed to be rhythm in reverse, which is pure genius.
Wow - the audience - I forgot that aviator glasses and mustaches were still popular back then - LOL
+Dave T And that wasn't quite. so. relevant. back then. ;)
"I think I have a bite." So choice.
Stan was hot.

Perfect apart form the edited profanity and the missing police siren!!
Is that Ned Leukhardt in the crowd at 3:16 & 3:37?
Who is on bass?
Band of Buckleys.
The problem with Urgh was the repetitious audience shots.
john maus @1:47
Who is that guy in the front row, he is adjusting his glasses in every single performance.
A Smith
After you notice him the first time you see him every time. I wonder if he ever watches these & says woah at those glasses
Why Stan Ridgeway sound like voice actor Don Messick?

Surfer Bri shame on you

Where's the blond punk rock girl now?
Kafkaesque AF.
Someone should write an opera about the blonde punk chick in the crowd
Devo's stoner cousins.
Dark Continent was by far the bands best release the follow up to this was not that good this song has such an amazing bass line!
