I’ve got two Henry's. My Big Boy in .45LC (brass engraved) and a little .22LR Mare’s Leg. I decided to keep them in soft leather scabbard type bags with leather fringe just for western fun. Neither of the firearms has a loading gate. Both have the mag tube. Not only is it convenient for quickly unloading, but for quick loading too. I picked up some plastic tubes specifically made for the purpose. Each tube holds ten rounds. I just pop the cap off and dump ten rounds into the mag tube of the Henry's. I carry all these loaded plastic tubes in a leather arrow scabbard.
Off topic: I finally picked up an SKS. Ended up with a Norinco because I couldn’t find a Yugo to my liking. Found it at a gun show so I was able to put hands on it and examine it. The rifle is in fantastic condition. After a good cleaning and a light lube, I took it to the range and my son and I zeroed it at 25 and then 100 yards. I then started pinging a ten inch gong at 100 yards. Then my son pinged it, then my daughter in law and then my twelve year old grandson. The thing ran flawlessly. Now I have another great rifle that I’m in love with - and it’s _your_ fault.
@@pinballrick6031 man I’ve been eyeballing a mares leg since the movie zombieland came out, I need to just get one.
Awesome find on the Norinco! Now get you an aftermarket ball type front sight post for it and it’s even easier to hit with. You’re welcome by the way! lol 😆 hey at least you didn’t get one right out of the crate and have to deal with the 62lbs of cosmoline they pack them in lol
@@thegundungeon Hmmmm.... ball type front sight post huh. Shopping. Thanks... I guess.🙂

You keep reminding me that lever-action rifles are a gap in my collection that I need to start filling.
@@gregcampwriter you’re welcome lol
Bought the brass one when they first came out. gorgeous gun... but... I had a problem in that sometimes it would jam when the bolt came back on the hammer. I called Henry and was shocked to get the owner of the company. He sent me a box prepaid to send the gun back. It came back working flawlessly. The only problems with the gun now is that it will not feed some of my handloads. it simply does not like the longer SWC bullets. Accuracy and smoothness is far better than my brothers Marlin which is just a bear to work. Thing is tho... I like the gun enough that I bought the Henry color case in .357.. This is the gun I would suggest everyone get. Looks? it is a show stopper. I picked it up at a large sports place with a gun counter 60 feet long and 5 guys working it. There was a line of people waiting to get waited on. The guy took mine out of the box so that I could examine it... everything stopped... people came over to look at it. No one had seen one. The counter guy said the reason none were on display was that they could not keep one long enough. sooo how did it work? Everyone who has shot it can hit anything they can see.. that is no joke. The recoil even with my hotter loads is almost nothing. which helps people be accurate in most cases. it feeds everything so far and butter smooth. My 44 mag one kicks like a mule.
@@doranmaxwell1755 that’s the beauty of hand loading. Even a 44 can be a powder puff if you want it to lol
Oh yah! Looking forward to this one. We love 44 magnum. It is an close range option for deer hunting. I taught most of my children how to deer hunt with 44 magnum rifles. The only Henry we have had was a Golden Boy Ducks Unlimited edition which wasn't the best hunting option. But we used Marlin 1895s and an H&R Handy Rifle. I want an all weather Henry but can't get my hands on one and they are too expensive. Please hop up some 240 XTP with H110 and put it in gel.
That's what we have used for nearly 20 years.
Love Henry’s and I am glad you got this one back up and running!
Your powderpuff load is a true powderpuff! It did not even splatter on the gong.
@@pbeardy it is and strangely enough hits pretty darn close to same point of aim as the big boy loads
I love every Henry that I have. Great guns and the only issue I have had is with the 30-30 not liking my hand loads.
@@atomross13 I’m sure a small change can fix that
Beautiful classic firearm.
So everything is going smooth now? Looking forward to the ballistic testing to nerd out over.
@@ThePenn7 yep haven’t had any issues since and was surprised how simple the fix was considering a lever action
Very nice! Hopefully we can get a aac 7.62x39 ammo test/ accuracy test between the FMJ and blade. I’ve been hearing mixed reviews
@@Grizzlyman420 on the way finally.
@ heck yeah man 🫡🇺🇸
I agree on the transfer bar/lack of visible safety. I hate safeties.. well... I want my safeties to be seamless anyway. next best option is the safety notch. This is what Colt SAA revolvers use/used.. Also some if not all Winchester lever guns use it. It requires that the user know what he is doing so not 'seamless' like a transfer bar say.
@@doranmaxwell1755 it may not be original to the design but even the 1911 improved with some upgrades lol
Great choice brother. 44 mag is a good balance between energy and capacity in a lever action. The ultimate being a S&W 500 aka Big Horn if you have 6 grand. Have fun plinking with the new beer rig! What’s a beer rig? Is that one of those hats with 2 beer cans attached? 🤣
@@angrysheepdog9744 I have eye balled those 500 magnum single shots. They look like they have some recoil lol
@@thegundungeon Big Horn Armory Model 89 6+1 Black Thunder
I agree with you on the simplicity of the Henry rifle. The fewer moving parts the better right? 😉 And yeah, I'm convinced it's a safe rifle to use, and that helps in the field and working with new shooters.
I no longer have any 44mag weapons. Growing old and loosing alot of muscle mass has made me recoil sensitive.
But the 45Colt is going strong for me. My Henry Big Boy is the earlier model in 45Colt. Excellent rifle.
I bought the .357 mag color case and love it. I am 75 and shot 44 mag all my life... still do but something about the .357 lack of recoil? works for me. Also... I have several .357 mag handguns including a 1969 Python so it is a good match. Try a .357 lever gun.. I think you will like em.
@doranmaxwell1755 Oh yes, I have several revolvers in 357mag and 38spl. Including a 20" Rossi 357mag rifle with the octagonal barrel, case hardened frame, nose cap, and crescent butt plate. A fantastic shooter!
Aside from my old S&W mod 28 357mag I carried on the street as a cop, my number one 38spl is a 1922 Colt Army Special 4". The most accurate 38spl I ever shot. I recently turned down an offer of $800 for it from a friend of mine. That one and my old S&W 28 are not for sale. 😉
@@anangryranger yep.. I have both a Python and a Trooper the fact that they are accurate is no big surprise lol also my Model 19 target is about the same for accuracy which is to say outstanding. What was a surprise tho was my Uberti Colt 1873 clone in .357. this thing shoots every bit as good. me and my shooting buddy who is my age... have both hit quarters at 25 yards with the thing.
@@anangryranger I haven’t tried to run any 44 specials, at least not in special cases, but I may try and see how it does with them, I imagine recoil would be nearly nothing
@@doranmaxwell1755 Outstanding! Love the old Colts and S&W revolvers. As to that single action, I agree. Have about 1/2 a dozen. Funny among the 1873 copies, I have a Richard and Mason 1860 conversion on 38spl 5 1/2" that's unbelievably accurate with a low blade front sight and of course, the notch in the hammer nose common to Colt percussion revolvers. I was flat out stunned how tight it shot. Won several bets until word go out on that pistol. 😏
No plastic guns here. All steel and wood. 👍
You have yourself a good Christmas and enjoy those classic weapons!
Kinda strange that your issue was exactly like mine was with my much older big boy. Mine would jam like that every 10 rounds or so .. what was happening to mine was that the hammer was not going back far enough to hit the full cock notch (if that makes sense) I could get the gun working by simply using something to get under the bolt and moving the hammer back a tiny amount till it clicked into the full cock notch... still.. that sucked so I sent it back and all was well. one other thing (sorry to monopolize with so many posts) is that you obviously handload. I would like to make a suggestion... I have been handloading for 50+ years? almost all cast bullets. I have fought leading most of that time I no longer do. Let me suggest HT coated bullets. I cast bullets myself and have the ability now to coat em with HT... it is not all that difficult but... several commercial casters sell cast and coated bullets. they are generally not much more than the plain ones... There will be.............no leading. any gun using them will be cleaner at the end of the day than one shooting jacketed bullets (gasp!) I would love to see you do a vid comparing them to plain lead... not many are .... I did some correspondence in this regard over the last 10 years LOL with handgun mags and they are now believers .. not saying I had any influence just saying coated bullets are the way to go.
@@doranmaxwell1755 I actually shoot mainly hi tech coated lead. These light 44’s were bare so I could keep them separated easier cause most of my ammo goes in tubber ware lol. Knowing I was using them for light loads I knew I wouldn’t be worrying much about leading but if I push them at all I use coated.
I have 2 Henrys and a Rossi R92 in 45 LC. and like the Rossi's looks , feel , but it will never be a Henry. Side loading gate only , I guess I'm not cowboy enough to be in love will that feature as the only way to load. Also not a big fan of the tiny mickey mouse safety on the Rossi. Cold hands or gloves very hard to use. Your good will the Henry.
@@johnhale9686 I’d probably delete the safety on the Rossi if I got one. They make plugs that fit nicely where the safety goes lol
What jacketed soft points are you shooting??
Zero bullets
When I was a kid in Oklahoma, it seems everyone had an old lever action .357 magnum of one variety or another as a "camp rifle" for the kids. Seems like everyone in our little group, killed their first deer with one, myself included.
A childhood friend in this group was in the back of a truck and was resting his hand over the muzzle of the un-cocked, but loaded rifle. When a dog was loaded into the truck, something on the dog snagged the hammer with obvious results, those hammer bar safeties are needed on this action.👍 As far as I know, the friend made a full recovery, but I sure am glad I don't have to see that scare in the palm and back of my hand everyday, because it easily could have been.🫡
@@Disastrous.Affect I think the transfer bar is definitely the best option for this type of rifle.
