Haunting & Eeriest (abandoned) Church Site in Gary, Indiana! - Built 1923 (deserted) Since 1971! 😲😱😳

  • The Gary-Alerding Settlement House was founded by the Catholic Church in 1923 with the purpose of “Americanizing” Gary’s workforce. The building would alter direction several times over the following decades, adjusting to changing balance sheets and social climate.
The final days were far from glamorous, however, and it was eventually shut down in 1971. Over forty years later, it’s still there.

Ahhh, one of my favorite spots in Gary, lots of history here! The 1971 "closure" date is sort of inaccurate--the original Settlement House operation ceased that year, but the building functioned as a regular church through about 2002, known as the Miracle Faith Word Center. There is a video somewhere on UA-cam of a service occurring here back in 1988, and cassette/VHS tapes of services conducted by head Pastor Hortense Trotter, dating to the late 1990s, have been seen in the building. So it has been vacant for a little over 20 years.
The interior of this building saw a large remodel around 1960, and most of the current interior remains date to this time. Minor updates were made in the 1970s and 80s. Based on the sketchy repair work, questionable wiring, and other details seen around the building...I can only imagine the Word Center was barely scraping by toward the end, on a shoestring budget at best. I wonder if parts of the building were already closed off well before the property was fully vacated. Newest thing spotted in there was a calendar from 2002.
Veerrrry bad conditions in there. Lots of structural collapse due to decades of water damage. The main sanctuary (formerly the gymnasium) has a large hole in the roof, and the original sanctuary (far end of the half basement area) is almost unrecognizable. The upstairs level was partially ruined by a fire about 12 years ago. Floors are caving in everywhere...

Gee, this is so sad to see a church in this awful shape. The statue with Joseph holding baby Jesus really got to me. It looked like someone painted fake blood coming down the eyes of Jesus. How disrespectful can you be then to do something like that?! This was very creepy though. It reminded me of something that should be in the Exorcist movie. Still, it hurts my heart when I see a place of worship become so unkept to the point of destruction. I imagine when it was active it was kept up in great shape as a house of God should be. But when it closed, I guess God must have left too because nobody cared about it anymore. How sad is that? Just a real shame that even churches have to get this way too.

Most closed down churches have someone in their congregations take down the statues, clean them up, and either sell them or give them to people in the parish or another church. Sad to see statues left to rot in an empty church.
Gary seems like a city hit by a natural disaster.

The settlement house was closed and abandoned in 1971; by then it had become a hangout for juvenile hoodlums.

I had one of the old residents tell me that same thing that it was nothing but a troubled hang out. Matter fact, I heard somebody was killed in the alleyway right outside the door. I just did not want to put all that information in the video, but yes, you are right and I appreciate you taking the time to comment.

Found it...here's a service conducted here in 1988. Unfortunately the video does not show much of the interior of the building, but I assume this was filmed in the main sanctuary (former gymnasium/the big room that currently has a huge hole in the roof near the stage).
