Garnett (Abandoned) Elementary School ~ Michael Jackson's School!

- July 7, 2009 (GARY, Ind.) Felecia Childress, 92, taught Jackson in Gary, Ind.
"I think I remember his eyes because he was so happy and he was almost bouncing around the room...and I remember Michael was the center of a lot of attention," said Childress.
Childress said it is not generally known, but Jackson had a slight speech impediment.
"Michael had this stammer, but when he sang he would not miss a note and his pitch was perfect. He must have had an excellent ear because his little voice was just right on tune and everything you know and he was happy," said Childress.
Jackson attended Garnett Elementary School and when he shot to stardom at such a young age, Childress said she felt for him.
"My heart ached for him because I remember the joy that he had mixing with his little friends, but it was so short lived. He didn't have time to be a child. H e just had to leave all of that behind and go to the serious part of life. And, that bothered me because I felt you know that's the way you learn so much about your relationships; is how you play."
Her heart ached again when Jackson died at 50.
"I thought what an awful, awful waste...because here was a man who could have accomplished even more than he had," said Childress.

I Googled:
Garnett School Gary Indiana
The reason was because I thought I remembered hearing about Garnett School as a child.
↪I think you were right. Garnett School. Google showed a pic and also showed a "blue pin" on Michael Jackson's house nearby.
This is too funny because my maiden name was Garrett and I never heard of Garrett School when I lived in Gary. Although I could be wrong.😞
Lol
Note:
Although, I did see the article an older teacher wrote/quoted , as she remembered it, as Garrett School
~Remembering A young Michael Jackson~
(ABC channel 7)
I was thinking maybe a typo there?
Maybe somebody knows for sure?
I didn't know how to share the link I found.
Gibby's Wife You are right! Named after the Rev. Dr. James Henry Garnett, the man who instituted the Boy Scouts in Gary as well as Gary Public Schools’ first probation officer. Born a slave in Georgia, he joined the Union Army in some of the Civil War’s bloodiest battles. Was educated at Oberlin College, and taught at schools all over the south before coming to Gary to teach and serve as a Baptist minister. One of Gary’s greatest advocates for children, his house still stands at 2300 Adams.
Great work guys, and Gibby’s Wife!

Oh! Thank you, BreakItDown1x
for taking your time in researching Garnett School and the Rev. Dr. James Henry Garnett!
That is such a very interesting story. And, what an inspirational life Rev. Dr. Garnett lived! After I started reading your explanation, I think we DID, in fact, learn to some extent, about him school! It was the facts you gave about the Boy Scouts, (because I was a Girl Scout
- trivia: Juliet Lowe.. lol) that triggered my memory. I started to faintly remember these things, in the lesson you so kindly explained! Thank you so much for sharing your research. I just love this. The history about Gary is so captivating. Steel City Storm's Channel has attracted such a great audience of intelligent people, as yourself. I love Gary, and want to remember it as it once was in it's Glory. I will be honest, it is sad to see it's demise. But there is so much of Gary's wonderfully diverse history that the children still should be taught. Even if it has to be taught in other schools, so many adults as well, would be surprised why older folks, such as myself, were then and even now so proud of OUR CITY! It's rich history, on so many levels, helped put Gary on the map. Sadly it is now known for it's crime and decay. The beautiful and unique architecture Gary once so proudly exhibited as it's own, if still made known, may inspire great people in the future to help bring technology to Gary some day. It's location on Lake Michigan, using it's natural resources as a new source to make a clean environment with it's ability to create a huge industry as a source of making ecological power from water and wind, as well as it's naturally power-filled location. Thank you again BreakItDown1x!

The schools in Gary were once so beautiful. The architecture was amazing. The detailing and embellishment on them were ALL unique to each school. Really, Gary had so much going for it back then! Oh! Those Grand Beautiful Churches were amazing. Their choices of architects were very good!
Wow! This is great info. I can't wait to research Rev Dr Garnett. So grateful for such men whose work made our childhoods so great.
Janice Roebuck
I know! I love learning these things as an adult. I think you appreciate people so much more. The ones who influenced your life, the life of your friends, loved ones, and even strangers.. Especially thankful for the good people like Rev. Dr. Garnett who made life so fulfilling for so many, as he sacrificed so much for generations to come. Can you possibly imagine how many people from all over the world came to Gary in and around 1906 who came here to make a better life for themselves, and also those who quietly made Gary grow, thrive, and become the great city it was back in our day? Not to mention the Steel magnates and steelworkers just the same, who helped build our country out of the Steel our Dads helped to make? The deeper you think, the more you appreciate what we once had. Maybe someday, again.........?
Save some MJ locations for when I’m there! Great video !
I really liked the young Michael Jackson's music ( we were the same age). But if you all have never heard the song "Stranger in Moscow" I would highly recommend it! Very hypnotic and beautiful!
So cool to see the Grade School Michael Jackson attended!! We were the same age!

I remember Jackson from Gary IndianaMy hometown
Mine too. Used to get on the bus and go to Goldblatts. Then they built the village shopping center.
Unbelievable the amount of stuff left behind I'm sure most it wound up going to the landfill. Just saw a video from a motorcycle enthusiast who rode some of the back streets of Harvey IL and sadly much of it was like Gary except many of the apartments were actually newer from the 1950s and 60s
What a shame.there lay money if they would just had a sale. Desks look good, most everting look good too. Good morning hey I have bag mice. Ha ha .
Keep doing ur thing, Storm … we all lov it 😎😎😎 … #WreckDude 😏
Thank you darling I sure will
❤️😉‼️⛈️
I don't know. This building seem structurally sound. Maybe they could convert it into Museum it should qualify for landmark status. Gary needs a think tank of concern citizens.
I Agree 100% on that think tank and tank you for all you nice comments I really Enjoy your input :0)
The Steel City Storm
This is exactly why I LOVE to come back, even months later, and re-read all the new comments! You have so many new subscribers that are seeing these "older" videos for the first time. The questions and answers shared here, are so inspiring. I'm glad to know the Real Gary, as it once stood so proudly around Lower Lake Michigan, with it's Famous Smoke, Rolling Out Of US STEEL' S Smokestack, hasn't been forgotten all these years later, by those of us who are able to reminisce TOGETHER on The Steel City Storm Channel. Thank you for giving us this forum!
Say storm I really appreciate what you are doing. I was wondering , just who was the city of Gary named after
Mark Williams - Elbert H Gary, who was instrumental in the establishment of the steel mill. There is a statue of him up at Broadway and 4th by City Hall.
Thomas Wells thanks for that info....always appreciate your great comments and history provided..
Storm the picture you referred to that was taken in front of a school may be in California. I think that it was the Gardner Street elementary school. He attended in California.
Was here recently, the gym has been hit pretty good with graffiti now with more damage in spots than I seen here, didn't run into the ghost of MJ either.

Garnett School
Did Micheal Jackson ever do anything for Gary out of the millions he earned?
Absolutely not
@@TheSteelCityStorm sad :( I wonder why..... You would have thought he might have started and sponsored a charter school like LeBron James did in Aakron or something else. Wasted his fortune on his " Neverland"
Please Google
Garnett Elementary School Gary Indiana
So sad..
It really is ............... Domingo
Think the name of the school in California was Gardner..so it's easy to get them confused
You are right Thank You sorry just seeing this message
Garnett is an elementary in Lake County Gary, Indiana….thanks for additional info.
Storm did you ever find any pictures of Michael or his siblings from Garnett. I found one of Micheal at Garnett.
The loquacious one
Oh, Wow, Loquacious! I'd love to see it!! Was it on the internet? If you are able to say, I'd be so thankful!😁🕴
Yes Gibby's Wife. I found it by accident. I will go back on my timeline. I will post soon.
The loquacious one
Thank you!
(I'm Gibby's Wife)
Gibby's Wife I found a class picture of Micheal. However, I think it was also taken in California at the Gardner Street elementary school. Give me a second to find the link.
Gibby's Wife sorry 4 delay. I found pictures of MJ on Pinterest. MJ attended Garnett till 11 yrs. old His kindergarten teacher was Felicia Childress. I saw a photo that was attached to notebook paper that stated Hello I'm Michael Jackson this appears to have been taken while at Garnett. In California Micheal attended Gardner Street elementary 1969-1970 then joined Marlon at Emerson Jr. high school 1970-1971 for a couple of weeks. Fans and students would gawk and stare making them uncomfortable as well as being on tour. So they were tutored the majority of the time by Rose Fine. Micheal then attended Calif. prep (as did Randy Jackson who was in the same year book as Micheal in 1976 )and finally Montclair prep high school. Jackie and Tito graduated from Fairfax high school. Jermaine from Birmingham high school in Van Nuys The picture of MJ in cap and gown is him getting an Honorary degree from a college. Also the Jackson's stated that they have very few pictures from their school years because they could not afford them after posing for them.
