    Toni! I predict this channel will blow up someday. Your insights have been so pivotal into getting the best out of my voice, especially in finally finding my false folds and making the raspy angry rock voice I always strived for (not much of a pristine voice guy LOL). Man I think without your channel I would've quit singing again and forever since I'm already a grown ass 34 years old about to turn 35. I don't think I will be the only one in that situation.
    Always been a guitar player but singing was out of reach (no pun intended) because I never been a natural and every time I gave it a go with any of my bands, either I made such a fool of myself on rehearsals, or tried so hard to sound "good" that I blew up my vocal folds, so I quit time and time again without making any progress. Knowing throughout 20 years in music many guys who tried to transition into singers by taking years and years of lessons just to make piss poor progress, and always with a clean voice when they are heavy metal or alternative rock singers (and hearing them and feeling like no way I want to sound like that even tho they sing pretty well), seeing that in many cases and never knowing first hand of a "voice transformation" of sorts, made me VERY skeptical of lessons in general. Like yeah you could get better at singing notes but your general tone and ability to distort are pretty much set in stone.
    I even came to deeply suspect that vocal technique might be just placebo and there's no learning to sing like, e.g., Layne Staley, either you have it or not. But earlier this year I said "what the hell let's try again with youtube tutorials" and made some impressive melodical progress with your typical youtube coachs like Liepe (his videos and exercises helped me SO much to explore my head voice register and develop support so I don't blow my throat up trying to reach some notes) people around me started to notice but I was still not satisfied since I was not be able to find my "grit" or "rasp" or whatever you may call it, that's how I like to sound, but I wouldn't get that sound without literally pushing and going hoarse in like 2 minutes. I think your videos on false fold distortion where the ones that gave me the final hints I needed, just around June this year I started to get false fold distortion and kept honing it better and better without hurting myself, now I'm so happy with what I can do with my voice, I can distort the shit out of my lines if I want or be more subtle and never go hoarse.
    And people are starting to tell me how much I improved! Even the drummer from my band went from "hold on bro you are destroying your throat, let me sing that line" just like 6 months ago, to telling me that I'm nailing this singing shit a week ago. So yeah I'm pretty happy with what one can accomplish just by learning about all this stuff. When my friends ask me how I did it, I direct them right to your channel.
    BTW there's still plenty of stuff that haven't figured out, especially how to distort over M2 which seems to be a common challenge that involves more fry or creaking. But I feel patient now that my voice is more in line with the music that sounds in my head.

      @@ToniLinke I went on a bit of a crazy ramble there 😂 I can't help it man, this journey is so exciting. Forgot to mention I also went through the cookie monster phase when trying to distort very early this year, that shit would make me cough every time and my band mates would tease me for sounding silly LOL gladly they are happy with my progress now ✌🏽

    Dude! I found your channel through Alikis videos and just sat and watched through your rough vocal effect series, and then the revised version. My impression was "hey this guy knows whats he's talking about". Then I saw this cover and the second you opened your mouth I was like "holy shit". You absolutely nailed that sound and from your mini lessons I know you are doing that in a healthy way, I would never have guessed he was doing that, I thought it was full power shouting. This is seriously incredible man. You've given me a massive inspiration and motivational boost, thanks.

      Maybe Chris Cornell was doing it slightly differently from what I'm doing here, we'll never know for sure! Some people say he was quite loud in his early days, but I find I get closer to his sound if I don't approach it from a belt.

      @@ToniLinke Well whatever you are doing it sounds great. I've seen lots of vocal coaches on youtube talk about this using similar terminology but you are the first one i've seen who can really back it up with demo performances. Other will say "this doesn't sound quite the same but it is more sustainable and healthy" and that might be the case, but you don't sound like you are compromising anything with regards to the sound you achieve and it looks like you could keep that up for a whole show with no problems. Thank you for replying to my comment, hopefully you'll have some slots in the near future for private lessons.

    Mega geiles Cover! Die distortion auf den hohen Tönen ist ein rattle, oder?

      @ToniLinke  Рік тому +1

      Nee, Creaking (Richtung Medium Fry), aber ähnlicher Subharmonic wie für Rattle typisch wäre!

      The high mixed notes are more fry/creaking, the lower chesty ones are false fold distortion :)

    • @ToniLinke
      @ToniLinke  Рік тому

      I think it's possible for lower voices too, just a bit harder! For me this kind of mix goes up to G5 or A5 on good days, and most of this song doesn't go higher than D5, so I think it's totally realistic for you to learn it!
