Video Killed the Radio Star did in fact show us the Real PTX, I think the Marvin Gaye's Lets Get It On (edit) put them in the driver's seat -- but Dog Days absolutely sealed their victory. It was the last performance people could vote on an it still blows me away.
This is the performance that stood out that night. I watched the show since season one. No one had changed up a song in that way. They continued to do amazing things but this was the one that really got people to start talking. No disrespect to other groups that came from this show but yeah, Pentatonix saved acapella.
What I love the most all these years later is seeing them take in all criticism and just dig deeper to discover who they were and who they were intended to be. And nothing was going to stop them. ♥️🧡💚💙💜
I've followed PTX since they debuted on The Sing-Off, and I completely agree. This was, in my opinion, their first killer performance. It's when PTX became PTX!
Yep! This was the one where every other competitor started to realize that this little newly-formed quintet from Texas was to be taken seriously. I don't know if they took the lead with this one or not, but if not, they were close. From this point on, basically every performance (with only a couple of minor exceptions) was killer. And the fact that they did this song for their friends in Sonos was a nice touch. Sonos is one of the few other groups from the competition that is still together, although they have changed their name to Arora now. Avi actually dated one of the girls from that group for a while after The Sing Off ended.
All the hype for this performance was, and is, totally justified. Each member contributed mightily to the success of the song. Keep doing these Sing Off performances please.
This is what made me a permanent Pentaholic!! As I said in an earlier comment, this was the first performance in two years of watching the show that made me sit up and say, “What was THAT?!” BTW, the reference to Sonos is definitely funnier in retrospect, because before the show, Sonos was the biggest name ever to compete on the show. They were already a very popular, innovative acapella group, especially in their use of pedals and looping equipment to change up their sound and augment it. The Sing-Off show runners recruited them for the show and initially told them that they could use their equipment in their performances, but changed their minds after the group signed up for season three. Their bass singer had left the group not long before taping started and they were unable to replace him in time, so they were a person short, having to rely on their baritone for their low end, and unable to fall back on their equipment. As a result, their three performances were thin-sounding and just never gelled, getting them kicked off after only their second episode. After the show, they renamed themselves ARORA and continued to perform in the LA area, but lost their title of top acapella group to Pentatonix. BTW, you’ll see members of the group appear in the TSO audience supporting PTX for the rest of the season, especially the blonde woman who began dating Avi during taping.
This performance holds a special place in my heart. I was nannying a little boy back in 2011 and when I got there he asked his dad to show him that video again. Turns out it was this performance that he'd seen on tv. Needless to say we watched multiple times that day along with their other 3 performances prior. I've been hooked ever since.
People have their favourite performances from here on, but the general consensus is 7, 10 and 12 are stellar. Each show they are learning how to work together to create that world-class Pentatonix sound. Isn't it phenomenal that they began to gel so quickly? Their learning curve was steep and fast, and pure bliss to behold. Loving this journey with you!
This was so excellent! I love how after their skip effect, they come stepping out so bold and confident! Yes, this was so them - and in only two days! The judges were smiling like crazy the minute the applause hit! Note Sara's comment about Scott showing restraint: he's carried that lesson with him ever since
Sonos was another five person group in the same season. Their specialty, however, was using electronic effects such as loop pedals and they were not allowed to do that on the Sing Off, putting them in a major disadvantage. It was no real surprise that they were eliminated after their third performance.
Whenever i think about their time on the sing off i always think this is the first song they performed because its really the first one where they really stood out and showed they could win. This is where the competition started
What impressed me the most about this episode is that they didn't stay wedded to a choice that wasn't gelling for them. They felt that it wasn't right and were willing to take the risky step of changing the song just a couple of days before the show. And watching them work together and knowing that they LISTEN to each other - that's why they stand where they do today. Top of the list.
I loved them from the first time I saw them on TSO, but this one set them apart. I'm so glad that you have fallen in love with PTX, Travis, because I'm really enjoying this journey!
I love Ben's critiques because he always gave them SOMEthing if there was something to give. There are 2 or 3 more performances on the show that will blow you away and I can't wait until you get to them!!! Then Say Something and New Rules x Are You That Somebody. And Jinjer!! Their Pisces live session, please!!! Do it for one of your poor Michigan girls, and know that I would donate if I could afford to!!!
Hi , thanks for being your awesome self, Put on your seat belt in a few performances you will be so amazed. Thank you for being a highlight of my days I’m successfully fighting cancer and You take me to a happy place and I’m very grateful. You are a light in my world and I wanted you to know this ❤️
By this point, Shawn Stockman was totally in love with them and had become the first Pentaholic. I wonder if they knew that. They seem so concerned about being eliminated. Which was a good thing, really, because it pushed them to get where they were by the end.
My vague memory of Sonos is that they were more out of the traditional acapella box than most of the other groups. I only just read that they still exist under the name Arora. Their Wikipedia says they're basically into melding acapella and electronic effects pedals, which they certainly wouldn't have been allowed to use on The Sing-Off (and I'd remember for sure if they had). So I guess they suffered from that. Sara Bareilles had already worked with them by the time of the show, and that's one of the few things I definitely remember about them, because she didn't try and hide that during the show. That's part of what PTX meant, talking about Sonos'' success (they'd had a few albums too). Edit - okay, I see a few posters definitely know or remember even more about Sonos than I do... arguably if they'd been allowed to using looping they'd have eclipsed Pentatonix, because looping is awesome and very very flashy/impressive to an audience. Likely there wouldn't have been a post-show PTX if this had happened though.
I’m one of those who told you so! Keep working through these because they just keep getting better and better. You must do Aha! Singapore, the Star Vista. Mitch and Avi will blow your socks off. Avi either blew a speaker or almost blew the mic on the phone that recorded it.
Yes, please do! But make sure you react to the official video first. Then you can focus on the live performance it self without having to take in the song and the arrangement.
@@lindafintling2042 Two big differences between the original and Singapore. One, Mitch was beyond amazing of course. Two, since the person filming stayed on Mitch, you could really tell what was him instead of just the overall beautiful sound. Travis, Kevin was off-stage putting up his cello. He returns when Avi is singing.
@@terriv9002 I agree! It's a totally different experience watching the live phone recording and notice those details that you mention. And to get to know the song and arrangement by checking out the official video first, makes the live version even more amazing in my oppinion.
One of my favorites is actually the next performance. In addition to their most lauded performances, the next one is where they turned the corner *for me* into a really stellar group.
And now that you've seen the 4th one, everyone will be saying "Wait 'til you see the 5th/6th/7th one!" etc. The Trio are finally trusting Avi and Kevin to hold the beat, and except for one slightly muddled bit toward the end, this one was the best so far. They just get clearer and tighter and stronger every week. It's great how closely your comments matched with the judges. See you in the next one - it's a killer!
Great reaction. This one is an all time favorite. Back when we were watching them on Sing Off, this performance made everyone stand up and take notice. Thanks!
This one is fun! They are so cute! Cringeworthy for Mitch looking back on this version of himself and them all! I can only imagine how I would feel if that was me! Love this performance, though! Thanks for staying on this Sing Off journey! So enjoyable! Just wait until 5!

Great reaction as usual Travis. This song and Dog Days were my favorites. Thank you for reacting to the Sing Off cause I never tire of hearing and seeing these performances 💕
Sonos (Aurora) actually helped them arrange one of their early PTX originals. My favorite Sing-Off performances are still to come. As are my favorite PTX and Superfruit performances.

I like that the Avi era PTX passed on Cher’s Believe. They included it in their 90’s dance medley and gave the lead to Matt. Interesting choice. I wonder if it was conscious ✌️💚

If I remember correctly from watching the series on TV, Sonos was made up of professional session musicians from Los Angeles who put the group together to compete on the SingOff. So they were a quintet with members just a few years older than Pentatonix who were making a living singing. That's what Pentatonix wanted to do. I think Sonos got eliminated because their arrangements weren't that interesting and the group had not had time to really gel.
Actually, Sonos had been together for years and were very successful with live shows. The assembled group of studio singers was Urban Method, out of Denver. They were the rapapella group.
Apparently it's because Sonos' gimmick was using looping. Which if you've ever seen Kevin do it in his solo stuff, or even Ed Sheeran do it, is impressive. They were apparently told later, after being cast, they couldn't use the looping tech. As mighty as PTX is, if they'd gone against some impressive looping, there's a decent chance they would have lost. Because looping is flashy and very impressive. And if they'd lost the show? I'm pretty sure Kevin and Avi would have drifted back to their other lives.
Ben comments on their timing, but I have seen video of them performing this in shows. Scott always goes off beat in that last part. It was an artistic choice, not a mistake.
And after 10 years, they finally put "Believe" by Cher in their "90s Dance Medley"...
So satisfying to hear that...
They so autotuned it! No wonder they did not do it on the sing off. 🤣
