  • It's time for me to take my amaryllis bulbs out of dormancy and to get them planted so that I can enjoy their blooms during the winter months.
Here is a general timeline to follow:
January - May: Remove spent blooms; keep on a bright windowsill; water; fertilize
May - June: Plant outside after frost (in ground or in pots; fertilize.
August - September: Lift bulbs, place in cool and dry location for 6-10 weeks; do not water; 50-55 Fahrenheit
November - December: Clean bulbs; plant in pots with fresh potting mix; start watering; Place on a bright windowsill; 70-75 Fahrenheit; bulbs should bloom in about 8 weeks

I live in Southern California zone 10. Can I just grow the bulb year round and plant it in the ground? Or do I need to dig it up and put it into dormancy somehow and then wake it up again? We don’t even get frosts here so I’m wondering if I’d have to put it in the fridge for a couple of months? I’d love for my amaryllis to rebloom but I’m not sure what to do in my climate.

Great question! Amaryllis are hardy in zones 8-10, so lucky for you, you can grow the bulb year round in the ground. No need to dig it up. If you want the Amaryllis to bloom for you during Christmas or the winter holidays, I'm guessing that you'd have to dig it up and put it into dormancy first in order to control when it blooms. 🥰🌸

Can I put my potted amaryllis outside on my deck during the warm afternoon hours? It's showing a little growth. Or is it better to keep it on my windowsill?

Hi Patti. Place the pot where the temperature remains above 60°F. The warmer the temperature (70-80°F night and day is ideal), the faster the bulb will sprout and grow. Providing bottom heat (by setting the pot on a propagation mat or on the top of a refrigerator) may help stimulate growth. I hope that helps. 🥰

So you agree that putting it outside where it's warmer is okay? Thank you so much for your help. This is my first try with winter bulbs.@@budgetgardeningvita

Hi Patty. You should be ok. Here where I live the highs have been in the mid 40s so you must be having much warmer weather. Lucky you! Good luck with your winter bulbs. They will be so pretty once they bloom. ♥
