Poor Finian oh we have solid bishops still, but the prejudice had increased before the abuse was publicized. I'm a teacher in public schools, and I'm often praised for that, while mocked for continuing to be Catholic because of the scandals...even though public school teachers commit a far greater amount of abuse against children than priests ever have. That's not a defense of any abuser - every single one must be held accountable. Yet prejudice holds some to be worse than others, to the point of wanting to destroy one institution while at the same time wanting to throw more tax dollars at the other. My life is easier because I'm not held in suspicion just for being a teacher. People are quick to say the percentage of abusers in public schools doesn't represent all of us. But the same people have no problem lumping all priests together as abusers. That wouldn't have been the case in the 1950s or 60s - people would have held individual priests accountable while continuing to respect the rest.
It saddens me to think that this was only a few decades ago, yet it seems like a lifetime. The only thing that keeps me from despairing for our country, is the fact that His denial was foretold and this falling away was expected. Forgive us, Lord.
Sadly the modern bishops of New York can't bear his holiness and have succeeded in blocking SAINT Fulton J. Sheen's beatification. They make themselves look like fools. Archbishop Sheen has a cult (which means a following, not the bad kind of "cult"). In Catholic tradition, holy men and women around whom a cult is formed, so long as they are real people who can be demonstrated to be worthy of veneration by virtue of their devotion to God and His holy will, are eventually recognized undeniably, infallibly as Saints. The fact that Sheen has already officially been found to have a miracle attributed to his intercession will only increase his cult and lead to the Faithful venerating him all the more as Saint Sheen, without waiting for the pope to do the canonization. Plus, the bishops who called for the delay of his beatification, and the Vatican officials (including the pope) who approved their petition owe restitution to all the people who lost money because of short notice cancellation on travel and accommodations, not to mention the income to workers in Peoria who lost wages at Christmastime. Foolish!
