    There’s something to be said about a quality mountain bike setup for touring. It would be reasonable to go 13 miles in an hour, but the energy usage would obviously be a lot more. You could, however, continue with the bike and not on foot after the 80lb electric bike died. Obviously much cheaper upfront investment. Next step from there would be a dirt bike with extra fuel ready to go.
    Moral of the story - electric bikes have there place for bugout, but it’s extremely niche and there is probably a better tool for the job as of now.

      Simplest is best - a mountain bike has more room for bags and gear since there is no electric motor or battery. It is also much more light and nimble. If there was a true disaster I'd rather be on my mountain bike than a gas motocycle or e-bike. I could be more stealth, access more remote and rugged areas and have infinite range (as long as I had caloric intake). The only think you give up is speed, but even arguably your daily range can be further as you are not required to stop and charge or go into town for refuel.

    I bought two coleman ct200u minibikes they are large for adults.they have a back rack i have taken this thing up some hellacious trails it performs great and for 500 bucks most people can afford one.I put a little bigger predator engine from harbor frieght 7hp for 99 bucks it really goes almost as good as a dirt bike it gets 135 mpg i also put two new Kenda scorpion mud tires on it and a silencer rlv pipe...just a thought for us poor people lol. it performs way beyond my expectations it weighs 130lbs and will run on the pavement the interstate not legally and the mountains all day long..just thought I would put this out there it may be a good choice for the budget minded and it is a really powerful bike.

    I would recommend a mid drive system bike for bugging out. Why? Insane climbing ability with a mid drive system. Plus you leverage your existing low gears on the rear wheel. Redundancy...if your electric system fails you still have the mechanical advantage of your rear wheel. A hub drive has no gear reduction. With no power it leaves you with just 1 gear....not optimal in my opinion especially when your packing 350 pounds of person and gear.
    I like the Specialized LEVO. Pricey buy proven durable.

      I just got a Specialized Fatboy SE and plan to add a mid drive setup to it. My goal is the LEVO, that thing is SHWEET! If I could afford it, I would have it already.

    I picked up a Change 609 folding Mt. bike a while back... its awesome. Way better than that Montague POS. You can buy electric bicycle conversion kits now for pretty cheap, too.

    Ducati makes a really badass scrambler I saw at the store. Enduro tires on a 750 motorcycle. Actually a pretty good idea having a bike like that in the bed of the truck for added travel

  • @devoidbmx1
    @devoidbmx1 3 роки тому +1

    For bugging out a traditional mountain bike or bike-packing bike is more ideal. No worries about fuel, or charging, has infinite range and nimble enough to go on rugged trails. You only have to look at Bike packers (for example those who ride the Great Divide trail in one go) for inspiration. They ride the entire length of the rocky mountains from Canada to Mexico with only occasional resupplies in small towns all fully self sufficient and self powered with lightweight camping kits carried in clever bag systems. The concepts of self-reliance used by bikepackers and backpackers should be applied to these types of situations. If you are on a self-powered bike or your legs you can reach more remote and difficult to access areas than when you are weighed down by any type of vehicle that has an electric or gasoline powertrain. The drawback is that your daily range and speed are limited, but arguably the daily range of an electric or gas powered bike is poorer than a self-propelled bike because you must stop and charge and have to revisit areas on the grid more frequently.

    Thanks for doing this test. While the Vintage looks super cool, I don't think it is the best solution for bugging out. An ebike made for hunting would be better, especially one with a mid drive and much wider tires. Most are capable of carrying 300lb loads and can have better range on steep terrain with pedal assist. Keep the great content coming!

    I wanna see a vintage dirt bike, dualsport bike and a mountain bike tested. I normally pack on 40 miles a day on my bmx and mountain bike. I would love to try a pedal assist bike some day. Till then it's cheap dirtbikes and Frankenstein bikes for me lol. Best wishes to you mr Glover

    For a bug out bike, I'd put together a Montague Paratrooper bike with the Bafang BBSHD mid drive kit. For less than half the price of the Vintage Scrambler, it should be more capable off road, and you get more range depending on battery options. You could also carry extra batteries, and there's the option of plugging in a portable gas generator. I've seen a couple guys on youtube who have done the gas/electric series hybrid bike.

    Thanks for sharing. This is a great topic to cover. This video showcased and basically proved that the bike can do what it is advertised to do. It wouldnt be on my radar for a "Bugout" bike though. Too heavy, and though this video is my only exposure to it, it doesnt seem to be "All Terrain" capable for a Bugout setup. It's just seems like a beach Cruiser on steroids. This isnt to knock it though, looks like it could be a very pleasant ride for a daily commute.

    It would be cool if you could charge it with like a fold up solar panel

    • @ctrlaltdebug
      @ctrlaltdebug 4 роки тому +1

      Battery packs are around 700 watt hours, so with a 100w solar panel (not small, but possible) you'd need at least 8 hours to charge. You might ride 4 hours at dawn, charge 8 hours mid-day, then ride 4 hours in the evening. Of course the battery will discharge much faster than it charges, so your riding time will be shorter.

    The RAD power bikes are $1500, I have the RAD Mini with milk crates front and back and commute on it every day to work, bought it last July and just rolled 3000 miles on the odometer with not a single issue to date including hundreds of miles off road on single track trails. I appreciate the Cool factor of this bike but way over priced....

      We bought two 2017 Rad Rovers, then sold my wife's to a friend for what we paid for it, and bought her a Rad Mini. Rad seems to give you the most amount of bike in that price range.

    Did you pedal the thing, or just crank on the throttle!? If you’re trying to maximize range, you ride it differently than if you’re trying to ride fast.

    If you have no way to charge it that is a stupid shtf vehicle, solar panels can be a game changer. I wish someone would design a system that would generate electricity as you go, if it would create a quarter of what it uses and you use it when you need it, you would never have to plug it in. Then you got something.

    What’s the best road legal off road motorcycle that is best as a bug-out survival vehicle? In severe situations like invasion of cities or natural disasters everyone escapes by the highways, but they get blocked by vehicles that ran out of fuel, leaving motorcycles and bicycles as better options to filter through traffic or better yet bypass the traffic jam by riding off the side of the road through forest etc?, but everyone will be desperate to take your two wheel vehicle, so the speed of a motorcycle might be best and probably cheaper than that electrical bike too, so whats the best, quietest most reliable motorcycle for emergency transport(long range tanks, jerry can fuel storage on the bike)? Also after a nuclear strike, the EMP effect of it will burn out the electric ‘chips’, so what motorcycles are immune to a nuclear event if your racing to cover to escape fallout or remote bugout location? Or even fuel powered bicycle?

  • @davidh1314
    @davidh1314 3 роки тому

    Maybe just a small, used dual-sport motorcycle ($2000-4000 used). Ride it until you get to the goods or are blocked by something, then continue on foot...........

    I'm far from an equipment expert, but why can't something like this bike have a constant charging system? A car has an alternator that has a continuous charge. The wheels are constantly turning, and should be a good point for some kind of electric generation, correct?

    • @trumptookthevaccine1679

      It would be constantly slowing itself down and be inefficient
      You could do energy regen on braking but that makes the system more complex

    i just found your channel and thus far dig what's going on but have to say in this example you're both being way too nice (putting it mildly)about the so called capability of this bike. Its 80lbs you cannot really use it w/o juice and anyone in reasonable shape could cover close to that distance on a regular bike in similar timeframe. Before its questioned my last trip was on a mid 80's huffy worth maybe 20 bucks with a 100lb trailer in which I easily averaged 10mph and century distances per day most of the time(Helen GA and Tellico NC/TN slowed me down for sure) to include service roads and remote areas from SC to NY. This was on a 10 sp road bike btw. Further the cost 7k? one could buy a Rokon a nearly indestructible 2x2 for that cost and have something useful in most any terrain which has water and or fuel storage in its wheels and sips fuel and is easily maintained . or just ride a regular bike or perhaps a mid drive lighter option etc. one can piece together an electric assist fairly cheaply. There's no need to spend such exorbitant amounts for such little performance. I'm subbed and will watch few more but suppose you will have to find me on this one lmfao.

      A $100 gas engine bike kit on a cheap bike would make a nice contrast to the electric bike. Maybe buy a $200 Walmart bike and put a rear rack on it for the bug out bag.

    So, a major flaw here is you didn’t actually pedal the bike, you relied on the battery for the whole 13 miles, which was really lame. You also didn’t evaluate how well it actually does pedal either. It’s extremely important to describe how well these bikes work when simply pedaling and also how far you can go while pedaling in pedal assist model. Huge miss .....
