Something does NOT add up here. Many years ago when I still lived in the US, mopeds were introduced as one solution to the "great oil shortage" of the 70s. Depending on your state of residence, you could purchase 20MPH, 25MPH and 30MPH versions. The mopeds were limited to 50cc engine displacement. Most states had no special registration. All we need in my state at the time as a small sticker available at the registry of motor vehicles for a few dollars and good for, if I remember correctly two years. With a 125cc engine, you can only get 24MPH out of this bike? The engine may be detuned to produce extra torque and the gearing may be super low but 24MPH? Does anyone agree with me? Note the earlier comments from folks in the UK about their experiences.
I think most states require them to go below 25 miles per hour.
I don't know if you have that word too, but motorized bicycles with pedals are called "Moped" in Germany. These small-budget alternatives to cars and motorbikes were very popular here during the sixties to eighties and are still everywhere.
I'ld rather find a nice, restored Honda trail bike, around 125cc. The older ones were similar looking, with the rack on the back, and had a gearbox that could switch from high, to low. So you could still get around 45 mph on the flat run, then, switch it down into low for steep, off road. Great bikes and very dependable. Last one I came across in very good shape went for around $800.
I wonder how much you gonna pay for a used worn and torn 125cc bike . I built my brand new motorized bike for $200.

get yourself a motorized bike kit for 150and use your mountain bike paint it flat black put some racks on it..no license.no registration..no problem.. and use the money saved for a large screen t.v.so you can watch the world crumble in hd...

Before you buy a motor kit, check to see it if will fit your bike. Most kits fit cruisers but not every mountain bike - it needs to have a large space in the frame for the motor.

Honda 50....the very best. I saw 5 Vietnamese and about ten upside down live ducks on one Honda 50 heading to market. Deservedly the biggest selling motorised vehicle of all time.

Oddly ideal. Keeps you mobile on laughably small amounts of fuel, rack for the bug out bag, fits compactly in the bed of the pickup with the *MAIN* survival gear for when the truck goes tits up or is not suitable. Universal bomb-proof Z50 engine design and parts that might as well grow on trees, pedals for when you can't afford to make noise. If you're basing your bail out plan on a bigger bike, fine, but this fits the small scale plan without everyone hearing you roaring down the trails to your safe spot.

Urban Survivor Remake the video - a 80 cc 2 stroke motor is sold on eBay for 95.00. It goes 45 mph. Mounts to any bike.

The 125cc is supposed to go 44.mph..... keep in mind at that CC level it is considered a motorcycle in most areas. The 49cc goes 24mph, but is considered a moped or motorized bicycle in most areas.
The Crimson Tide kit is made up if a $130 walmart bike and a $100 Chinese engine. Even with upgrades you'll still be under $300. Any one paying $500 for this, especially as a kit, I've got some special water I can sell you. LOL
just get a 29cc engine for 60-80 bucks used or 100 new. And get tank 45 bucks. and the 29cc can go 26 MPH traction. With chain 30 MPH.
My first bike cost me around $800 for everything. (shocks, rack etc.) My second was $50 and I made upgrades out of scrap parts, it is the best bike I have owned yet.

My Honda Wave 110cc, does 200mpg (imp), 60mph, carries 2+ people, laasts forever and costs $900 here in Asia. Then you buy a sidecar and carry a 1 ton payload...... So much for this modern "cool" jjunk.

Electric hub on the front and petrol on the back is my favorite. Shame there's no real good way to do the German U-boat trick where using the petrol motor will charge the electric, etc.
I equipped my cam am commander. With my stored fuel I have 900 mile range on it. Plus everything I have for gear. Spare parts . I've made this thing unstoppable. It's bad ass . If SHTF I am good to travel far and wide, Now I pray I don't have to use it for that purpose.

When looking at that Crimson Tide bike the Wicked Witch of the West theme instantly popped in my head.
Ok I spoke too soon. On second thought another situation where one of these bikes could be useful is the initial bugout. Remember when hurricane Katrina was bearing down on New Orleans and people were jamming up the highways trying to get out? Well if you sacrifice enough gear to carry a 5 gallon gas tank on your back you can extend the range of a 50cc motorbike out to about 600 miles, more than enough to get you out of Dodge. And if the post apocalyptic world is surprisingly civilized you might spend very little gas getting salt from the ocean back to civilization for a living. But in a total SHTF scenario your going to find out the hard way a motorbike is very far from a tank.
There is a guy here in my town who has one made of a regular bike and a weed whacker engine. I think its a simple friction drive. I think the "clutch" simply uses a break pedal to pull the engine off the wheel. Also using a regular "whacker" engine solves your spare parts headaches as the parts are easy to come by and available everywhere.
I also saw a trike on Instructables that was solar powered. No fuel needed ever and almost silent. They got I think 10-15mph on a full charge and no cargo.
Mind you, in Viet Nam the VC moved most of their munitions via bicycle by tying bamboo staves lengthwise on the frame and lashing cargo to that. They pushed them generally, but, they could haul 200lbs of gear over rough terrain. So a bike is a great asset regardless of it having an engine or not.
So I don't know a lot about this bike specifically, but most motorized bikes are homebuilt. The 80 cc 2 strokes can usually get to 30 mph and the kits only cost about $200 (you need you're own bike). You need to remember, though, that 2 strokes need mixed gas AND these motors are usually made in China and have poor quality parts. They break down a lot, and a lot of the folks that build these do it because it's fun, not because it's reliable.
How do you get it ensured and what license you need for it? Is it same like those pedelecs or ebikes?
Get a Kawasaki klr650 dual sport motorcycle. 6 gallon gas tank, luggage rack built on, rides almost as good as a dirt bike, street legal and will do 90mph on the street. New they are $6k used much less.
That's not very practical for a survival bike. You need something that can be pedaled when not running gas. Moreover, 200 bucks for a bike and motor kit is a hell of a lot more reasonable for a 6k dual sport.
You aren't going to be pedaling long or very far with the added weight of the motor, gas and gear.

Just because the motoped has peddles doesn't mean you can ride it for miles by peddling .

With the rise in popularity and standardization, electric mountain bike, hub motor rear, direct drive, suspension seatpost, trailer (single wheel) or longtail cargo models, a kickstand that lifts the rear off the ground and can support a rider sat on it, use the regen to pedal it stationary as an exercise bike to recharge, or solar panel it, silent, spare parts are easier to come by nowadays, realistically pedalable without power, regen on downhill and manual on flat and uphill can charge as you go, carry a spare (normal) rear wheel with tyre and tube preinstalled for reverting back to a normal bike as well as carrying a spare tube and tyre on hand, scaving and building a solar generator post shtf is allot easier than creating biodiesel.

You continue on pedal power. :P I'm a pretty fit dude but even I wouldn't want to ride a pushbike around as my main form of transport! E-wheel / hub motor on the front for silent travel and a roll up power cell = long term usage. Shame there's no way to rig it like the U-boats which used electric and petrol (well, diesel) motors - when on diesel it would turn the electric motors and the screws, thereby charging the batteries and driving das boot. So the batteries always topped up as you were on the diesel engine.

It's a neat object, but if things are really tough, that's not what you want, you'd just make yourself a target, an old bicycle is the way to go. Collect old bicycle junk and learn how to fix bikes. Stockpile some tires, grease, chains and bearings and you're all set to ride out armageddon. Bicycles don't need any fuel, so they'll work no matter what, and they're silent, so you can travel without drawing attention, old bikes don't scream wealth, so you're not as likely to be targeted by thieves.
Also, where do you think you're going? If you think you need to move, then move before anything happens. For most people, what matters is being able to reach the places they need to go: to stores, to work, to family and friends.

I think an electric powered bike would be better. Making noise draws attention, and this thing's gas engine would make noise you could hear from half a mile away. Also, you can solar charge an electric bike.
Electric bikes are not a bad idea. They are generally pricier from what i've seen. Also, you would need a pretty strong solar charger to juice up a bike which I'm sure would run you several grand if you want it to be able to charge the bike within a day.

I own an electric bike, and two portable solar panels attached to the back of it. Solar energy gets interrupted by the cold during the winter, and clouds that are too dense. To fully charge my bike I would need $5-7k worth of solar panels attached to some sort of roofing system to get a steady current going. Tried taking a trip from nyc to canada on my two small ones, barely made it out of nyc. Ebike technology is not reliable enough yet imo
What you really want is a hybrid ebike with portable solar. Unlimited range and electric mode for stealth, gas for backup.
I can think of a scouting mission. Intel is always valuable.

they are loud as Heck and in a SHTF they are asking to be taken . During a hunt the gas /oil odor /noise will scare away game animals . Personally i think a good fat tire ebike with a small solar charger at home is the trick for shtf . Ebikes have snuck up game animals ,large and small many times . They are silent , odorless and fast . Gas will be hard to come by if the 'fit hits the shan' . The sun will shine . my 2 ¢
I use an 800cc 4x4 ATV to get to my camp every time that I go big game hunting. Seeing as I harvest animals every year I highly doubt that the noise and(or) smell from this little POS will disperse all the game in the area. As for SHTF neither this or an e-bike will do. A good horse is what you will need
A $7000 used Prius will beat the hell outta this thing.

Get a roof rack and carry even more.
Protection from the elements (sun, rain, cold, etc.)
Protection from bears and zombies.
A place to sleep.
It's very quiet.
It can travel at high speeds.
And you can use it as your daily commuter.
I once fabricated a Lawnboy mower engine onto a 20" bike. The peddles were removed and an additional sprocket installed on the shaft. A centrifugal clutch, chain & gas tank and that was it! Sold it to another kid before it was finished. He crashed it hitting a laied down telephone pole...oh by the way it didn't have any brakes!

Cool video, and I've been thinking about grabbing one of the 80cc kits to convert a cheapo 29er I have. It'd be a great short range errand runner, but y'all need to remember that the estimated top speed for engines this small decreases significantly when the amount of weight they're moving increases! So, for short runs, or if you like to travel REAL light, they're great. But for a long term long haul wicked post apocalyptic ride, I'll stick with my 98cid torque monster, my 2000 Yamaha Road Star...if I ride sensibly it's good for 50+MPG (35MPG when I ride REAL fast :-p ) and has a 4.5 gallon gas tank (loooooong range cruiser!), cruises comfortably at 80, can pack enough gear to go camping PERMANENTLY and move it at speed without breaking a sweat, and is straight up badass lol!
I built one of these using a two stroke motor off of ebay. Says it's 80cc but it's really 66cc. It goes about 15 to 20mph, but that's fast for a bicycle. YOU DO NOT want to go faster on a bike frame, they won't stand up. YOU WILL NEED some sort of springer front end. The bike weighs about 40lbs. MPG is about 100 miles. Check your local laws. The one above would require a license and tag. Mine doesn't. Almost anyone can put one of these together themselves. Don't use the chain adjustment pulley though, unless you like replacing frames, wheels and or spokes. Go to motoredbikes for more info.
Im a 300 pound muscle jar. I carry 70 pounds in my rucksack full of ammo and food. I go 28 at top speed on my stock bike. If your worried about what you can carry, dont worry. If your a normal person like john doe that ways 170 pounds then you will be fine. If your like. Building foundation like me you'll be fine.

I have an electric motor and a solar panel to charge. the kit only came with a battery set up with about 12 amp hr. but I pull a kiddie trailer with larger batteries and try to go about 50 miles or so.the drawback of course is not at full power as fuel runs out. the electrics are very quiet also
If I were in a shtf with kids in a city I would get them Razor scooters for emergency bug out. They are cheap, most kids love them and it beats trying to run.
Gas engines will giveaway your position and make people aware you're around.

For three grand you could easily find a dirt bike and rad it out. If you're really into the bicycle idea, then build your own. It's pretty cheap to buy the engine.
I have an electric bike like this and it goes 30mph and the battery gives me 25 miles per charge. It's lighter than your gas bike. It might even fool people as a regular bike because the engine is just inside the back wheel and I modified the battery to go inside a camo bag so I could put it in the center of the bike rather then over the back wheel. It cost $2,400 but if I ride it around for a year or 2 longer it will pay for itself. I have already saved $1000+ on not paying for gas. It's been my transportation for over a year now. I have spent close to $400 on repairing it but half of that is for service and I will just learn to fix it myself.
It's a Prodeco Outlaw-SS. Great deal. I rent and dont pay electricity so I am not sure how much I would be paying but I've been told its pennies per mile. I also will be getting a portable solar power generator from solutionsfromscience.com. So power will be free for the bike and these items will pay for them selves eventually. I need to save money for the generator but they have one for only $1,500 right now which is awesome. you should check out that site.

I've done some research. I weigh 300 pounds with out gear attached. I can't find what size electric motor conversion to move my 300 pounds. Or what size gas motor. Without being overkill in power. Can some please help. Thank you

I actually won one in a scratch-off ticket in Kansas. It is pretty nice, but with my life style I don't think I will use it much (I commute a long distance for work and my time out side is mostly walking my dogs) I am thinking of selling it but don't know where to start. Any ideas?
Do not waste your money! I built my own motorized bike goes 50+mph. I spent 200. Walmart. Cruiser $99 + 2 stroke(ktaxon) bike motor kit i got on sale for 69.99+ tax +free S&H = $200ish .
And they are quiet ! Not noisy at all so long as you use the silencer exhaust all kits come with.
My bike has a loud flow master with a stock silencer welded on . No1 hears me coming.
I get 29 to 32 miles per liter=110 miles per gallon. Also u can attach a 2 kid or 1 adult trailer. Or use the trailer for supplies. U can out this motor on a 2 person bike. . real easy to increase top speed. I removed air filter to increase air flow(÷5 to 10mph) and I added flow master(+5 to 10mph) =I'm afraid to put the pedal to the metal. So far my top speed of 51mph. I have never reached my bikes Top speed. My guess is 55 to 57mph.
80cc kit
about 5 years ago a lot of people around my parts ,instaled motors from a company called ZOOM BYCICLE ,they had these 50cc and 60cc motors you instaled in the frame, a little gas thank, they were realy strong and got your bike going at 50 km per hour easely , so just saying you dont need a 125 poud bike, just modifi the one you have and save a lot of wieght.
I don't work for motoped but I have ridden them and I can tell you without a doubt, a motorized bicycle or "kit bike" isn't even the same ballpark.... it isn't even the same sport.
if you want to see what a motoped can do there are many videos out there but I highly suggest if you can arrange a test ride there are demos across the country.
with some of the modifications available to the hundred 25 cc motor you can go much faster than 24 miles an hour and upgraded with mods to the motor which makes the thing as fast as most small dirt bikes.
if you took that $500 piece of junk even down a bike trail easy picking up the parts of it after about a mile. there are some were the motorized bicycles but taking some Chinese piece of junk and slapping a motor on they've found to be quite problematic and in some cases dangerous.

You called it speedy? Here in the U.K any 50 cc (Moped) is restricted to Max 30 MPH, Our next Group is up to 125 cc and they will give 60-65 MPH and return over 100 MPG. The problem with yours is also if you put any load on it and you go slower, Our do not as we have 6 speed gear boxes
In the UK around 1973 there were 50cc mopeds with power pipes exhaust pipes use to zip around over 30 mph.

That's an interesting idea. Do you think this would be convenient to do with most cars on the road these days or would you need a jack?
Urban Survivor no jack needed it was the last thing we were required to do when prepping old cars for the crusher on the scrap yard that and taking the wheels off.

I wouldn't mind having one of those to run errands around town. My truck only gets 12 miles per gallon.
Go all electric. You can get panels at harbor freight and a battery bank for recharge forever from your base. We use electric Unicycles. Tech’s getting better every year. There is one that claims 100 mile range with a top speed of 30 mph. But it’s expensive at $2400. Possibly useless with a significant EMP event. But so is your other bikes with electronic ignition. Go for old 70’s Honda trail bikes for emp proof. Gas scooters on eBay are very cheap and do 55 mph.

I got a quality diamondback bike off the curb, once I put new tires on it and throw my gear on and add a motor kit to it, it should be under $200

You're incorrect, the 49cc model is the one that goes only 24MPH. The 125cc engine model can go 45MPH.
The best part about this bike is it has pedals so it's still at bicycle and not a moped because the pedals do not start the motor they are to pedal a bike like you would a bicycle
look at the solex type moped old french moped that also exists in e-solex.
So what happens when you run out of fuel, you have a very heavy bicycle. An electric version of the same thing would make so much more sense.

This bike would run in the event of a Solar Flare like we had back in the early 1900s or an EMP from a nuke . The cars won't run because all computers would be fried BUT this bike has no computers like acar.
I got a deal on a clean notarized bicycle 4-stroke gasoline engine. I'm going to keep it gasoline and add propane which will make the motor last two or three times longer no black carbon build-up whatsoever and will stay in tune nearly forever. I will only run it on propane. I maintenance my my stuff. with propane it doesn't blacken the oil the spark plug or the inside of the motor at all. Propane engines that are decades-old and hundreds of thousands of miles with propane torn apart looks brand new. Four small propane 1 lb cylinders are equal to one gallon of propane. I may use 6 or 8 little bottles of propane in a backpack strapped down on the handlebars or behind the seat on a rack tie down. I've converted other small 4-stroke engines to propane so it's dual fuel gasoline or propane. But with just propane and no gasoline run in gas tank. I can bring bike inside my house just leave the propane cylinder outside. Also no carburetor problems when running propane. If your carburetor falls apart and you can't find a carburetor parts go propane. All you need is the flap to control air flow propane going past the air filter or directly in the carburetor that's it. and with propane you don't run the choke at all. You just have to have propane purged in the motor and a regulator to fine-tune it. But you don't have to have a propane regulator you'll just be wasting fuel if you don't have the regulator to fine-tune it by ear it's that simple. I have a propane and gasoline small portable 2200 watt generator. I can put it in the front seat of my truck because I've never had gas in the fuel tank. And it will run most things I need in a pinch or on the job for 18 hours at half idle on a full standard 20 lb BBQ tank. Also with propane you can run a small mr. Buddy Heater or a small single burner stove that run on propane. And propane is a 100 - 110 octane it never goes bad it's the best prepper fuel out there.
Compare the weight to the lightest dirt or street bike. They're *ALL* over 300lbs!
Gas bikes are uprgadable and faster while peddle assisting on the flats and down hill. They are very efficient.
I saw a bicycle that was ridden around the world; it was very durable, and had no need for gas. What you have is a toy.
I like the concept but I would consider using an electric bike that way you have no noise and no need to look for fuel if you could rig up a solar charging system with that electric bike you wouldn't have to worry about fuel at all and you wouldn't have to worry about noise

Some guys seem stuck in the past. Gas doesn't stay fresh long. You'd get an extra 20 years with an electric motor and a solar panel.
That's LOL hilarious "you might just wind up having to ditch the whole thing if you run out of gas" The whole vehicle is city dependent as is cars and you might not make it across the desert. Broke down only a truck can save you, the bus wont' bother. While your pushing it across the desert you can encounter wild animals. This bug out shit is no joke. Gasoline dependent hell. It's people dependent to stay on the road not made for lot's of independent movement trips. There's too much glass on the streets and it's real heavy probably shitty tires that puncture and picking that thing up over earthquake debris is a long effort....Whose gonna help with that?
You make some very valid points. This video of the motoped was more for amusement. I think that the conversion kits aren't a bad idea but my personal preference is just a regular bike.

kinda neat but if you are going to be light you better be nimble and fast i do like the options to put on a faster bike tho

For survival I would favor a 4 stroke kit, only need to look for fuel, no 2 stroke oil.
Problem with those 125cc bikes is that they probably not good as a standard 125cc dirt bike, also not good as a bicycle. Made my own for a fraction of the price with under 40lb weight (dry)

It was a lovely concept and a very attractive product. A shame they aren't made anymore and that no other manufacturer has picked up the concept and run with it. Most mopeds are too low-slung to be useful, and similar designs now are generally electric--- useless during a grid-down situation.
It was because you could buy a kit on Amazon and mount it to any bike is why this expensive thing didn't make it :/
